Been with free Lycos Web mail for more than 5 years through thick and thin, through Zimbra, bad service, being sold a couple of times and various other unimaginable things. Lately the basic service is more stable than previous years, for the most part. In last year I had only a few outages and they were responsive to my problem tickets. I have been with Lycos for many years as a free account user. It was never one of the better email services, but in its Angelfire form, it was one of the earlier ones available and "good enough" at the time. Since then, the service has deteriorated consistently to the point where I would not recommend this provider to anybody. “Use to recieve spam and ads”

Started back with mailcity, I keep the account for registration at sites where I really don't care to hear from the site again, don't expect the site to respect privacy, etc. So, needless to say, it quickly fills with ads and spam. I delete unread messages in bulk, occasionally, opening one or two to read -or unsubscribe. Works pretty well for this purpose - I gave up trying to use it as a real email account years ago - unreliable service, poor interface, no POP, etc. (read more)

MANNNY years ago I used Angelfire mail. Which was fine. About 10 years ago it was closed down and merged with Lycos. Since then it has been in progressive decline. There was the Zimbra debacle, a 2 month outage, lost mail, NOW it just COVERED in adds. Log in screed, a banner add, a side bar add, and a video. Click log in and a pop up pops up right over the log in plane. While attempting to log in a new video starts playing and interupts your cursor so your log in fails. SO you are taken to... I have been with Lycos for a long time and I have paid account, about $20 a year, and I still get all this advertising popups and videos when trying to log in.

While I've been reasonably happy with their system since they lost everything I had stored some years ago, these intrusions are deal breaker and I'm migrating a lot of subscriptions and general email away from them with a view to reverting to their free account and ceasing to use it. As far as I know it is not possible to actually delete your account, which is poor service too.

“Ten years plus and still happy”

I'm not a particularly heavy user, 3-4 times a week but apart from the upgrade period a few years ago during which I lost a few older emails in the transfer and access was a little temperamental I experience good service. I pay nothing and still get 3gig, more than enough for my needs. POP3 access would be great but I don't have any issues a little patience can't resolve. (read more)

I have had Lycos email for MANY years. I have had trouble with it all along and now I can't even login to my account. I have used Yahoo email for a while and it has been pretty good. Gmail also works pretty well other than them spying on folks and now google wants to get your cell number in case you forget your login info, WTF???. I too used lycos for more than 6 years. I noticed sometimes I couldn't log in, but allowed for some down time. I couldn't create folders but thought I was doing something wrong. Now I worked for Verizon and I am an email expert. I finally submitted a ticket after going through the directions carefully. I gave them time to correct the problem on their own. Wrong move! I am unable to read the whole content of this problem but it looks as though I am having the same problem. After I have entered my name and password it takes me to a page as though I am a new customer wanting to open an account. Also the email link to register the problem won`t work - it states `invalid querystring`. A huge problem for me as I have many email of importance to check today. Vee

This service is currently down and has been for a week. It is difficult to even find the contact for help with Zimbra email through Tripod Lycos. This is a free service with my paid domain, but it is horrific. Customer service hasn't responded to my email for assistance for over 3 days now. Service sems to go out alot. (read more)

Can I give Lycos no stars at all? Apart from being unavailable most of the time, now it claims I don't even have an email address with them. Discovered this when I tried to log in and it wouldn't recognise my password. Thought I'd made a mistake, so I clicked the 'I've forgotten my password' link and was told my username doesn't exist.

l've been with Lycos Mail for over 2 years & in spite of the terrible amount of junk that gets through, l always like the clarity of the layout. However, this has disappeared since the recent change - it's absolutely dreadful now; you can only see 4 or 5 mails at a time & it's ridiculously easy to miss or delete something important - whilst at the same time the amount of junk has increased enormously.

Between Feb 28 and March 2nd something happened to where I am no longer able to log into my email account.

I've been using lycos mail for more than 10 years since it was mailcity and I found it nice before until the recent change they made. It was a disaster. I can't even view my mails properly now. I wish they would bring back the old Lycos interface. The new one is a catastrophe. (read more)

Service has been out all week. There is an immediate redirect from mail.lycos.com to webmail.lycos.com - but webmail.lycos.com sign on returns the login screen and a cryptic message 'Servie is unavailable. Please try again later.'Is this service ever going to work again? This seems to be a regular occurance, where every year or so there is an 'upgrade' and the site is broken for days of weeks. Hi, I'm experiencing the same problem, since almost one week now. i opened 2 ticket with lycos help desk, but they keep me sending the password pretending that this is the only problem.

I have been a lycos mail user for over 10 years and the last interface change was a disaster. The site freezes when I want to delete emails. Most functions are very slow and the page layout is also cluttered.
I have emails that I have not received, even though I know they have been sent.
I to am about to jump ship.

Paid $4.95 for 1 mo. service only because Lycos claims no limit to attachment size. They lie! There's actually a 20 MB limit, which you only find out AFTER you've paid for service.

Hopeless. Constantly has bugs, error messages, and appears to have folded completely now, have been unable to log on due to sever being down for SIX DAYS now. Messages to help desk completely ignored. Even when it DID work it was soooo slow, and froze .
Use something else if you're thinking of Lycos, they are a bunch of useless idiots. Just as well it was free.Now I just have to try and let everybody know my new email address.... :(( (read more)

I've been a lycos email subscriber for years, and all has been wonderful, until this last "interface change". It's supposed to be an upgrade, but more
like a downgrade....maybe the folks at Lycos are trying to get rid of email subscribers all together!

I have also been a lycos customer for years, mailcity first and then lycos. These people are terrible. Last summer they supposedly did an upgr-ade and mail was terrible for about 2 months. Then it got better and, low and behold, they sent out an e-mail a few weeks ago saying they were going to do upgrades again. I can't even get into email now, going on 4 days, and I'm assuming it is because of their "new" and "improved". I too am moving ALL of my e-mail contacts and services to gmail as my husband uses it and has NEVER had the issues with it that these incompetents seem to be having. Do Not go with these guys, and for heaven's sake, no way would I EVER pay for this kind of service.

Back in the old days I used Hotbot, then Mailcity and then, about 10 years ago we were eventually moved to Lycos.com.

Twice in the last year Lycos.com has entirely wiped my account, the Inbox and Sent folders were empty of ten years of emails, documents, log in details, account numbers, statements, love letters, etc! And twice, after a long period of time sending in requests, they eventually got my account back.

Prior to Zimbra I found Lycos to be OK. Yes, sluggish but everything arrived promptly.
Along came zimbra. Interface looks 5 years out of date but whatever you hit nothing happens. I can see my inbox has items as do other folders, how I access the is anybody's guess.
I've been trying on and off for 5 months no improvement at all. Lycos use to have a good name here. No longer I avoid it like the plague.
The bozo who chose zimbra wants shooting - never seen anything like it.

I had this email account years ago as a Mailcity account for signing up to sites that send a lot of mail. It was changed to Lycos about a decade ago, and then to Zimbra.
It's always been slow, clunky and awful.
I have been trying to close my account for about 18 months. Surprise: you can't close your Lycos account! Instead, they will close it for you after "30 days of inactivity" they say. Presumably receiving a spam email counts as "activity" because it's been sitting there unused for... (read more)

The 'new' lycos is so slow it's a joke, the interface is stupid; when you log in in takes you directly to your 'tags' which, if you haven't set up, says 'No Results'. You have to physically select 'inbox' to get to your mail, please tell me how this makes any sense.

I've used Lycos for the best part of ten years, but not for much longer. G-mail is much, much better. (read more)

Have not had service for several days. When you try to use the new "powered by Kimbra" service it won't receive email nor will it allow access to any prior email.

Tried to get service on line but it would not let me because I could not remeber my service ticket pass word. It offeded to email instructions as to how to change that password but their service is down so I can't get emails. Called service line but told me no service as I am a free customer. (read more)

Lycos email is the worst ever! I have not received an email for close to a week! Before it switched to Zimbra it would often take much longer to receive emails than other alternatives (yahoo, hotmail, etc.), but after the change it went from bad to worse and became very hard to use. But what has happened lately is simply unbelievable. Imagine if you didn't get your emails to your yahoo or hotmail account for a week and counting. Yes, I know, unthinkable.

Lycos mail was only marginal up until August 2010. Emails were slow to show up, they were late with the 5GB storage thing (which is now standard), searching your inbox took forever, etc.. But in late August 2010, things went from being marginal to being downright unusable. Since the move to Zimbra, I have been without email for over 4 days, sometimes I can't login, and it's just totally pointless. I'm now figuring out how to quickly move to another service so I can leave Lycos behind... (read more)

What happened to Lycos mail? I cannot even log on anymore. Thank god I set up a Hotmail account on Thunderbird before this fell apart. I do receive emails on my Lycos account and would love to be able to get in and migrate any important emails over before I drop the service like a rock - Considering they're dropping their customers like rocks.

I too can't open my lycosmail. For four days I have been getting 'An internal server error' message. I am one of the veterans who had eudoramail on the web which then turned into lycosmail.
The latest incarnation of Zimbra taking over lycosmail has been a disaster. When the changeover took place all my emails were scattered out of order with dates in random fashion. All my preferences and information had been deleted. The look of the inbox was messy and it still is.

Since switching to Zimbra, Lycos has had nothing but problems with their server. I've been a customer for 7 years, and yesterday, I signed up for a new email account with another company. Have not received email for 4 days and not a word from Lycos about the problem. Even when it worked, service was sporadic and often I could not access mail for hours at a time.

I have also used Lycos since it was previously Mailcity and over the years I have had very few problems. Now there is something wrong all the time. I have not received any emails for 5 days and receive around 25 every day.
The message at the bottom of the log in page says there has been a spam attack which should be sorted by the end of the day - but which day - as this message has been there for 2/3 days now. (read more)

The 1st few days after my account was migrated to Zimbra, worked fine. Since this August 27, 2010, not receiving emails and the sent emails aren't not being sent. Put a ticket in without a response...

Same problem for me, I can't even logon! Get a server error anytime I try! And this is an account I even pay for! I am with them since mailcity times but I will switchnow to another provider.....as soon I can get my address book from them!

It is now the second time in only a few wekks that this happens. The worst part is that at the login scrren they only mention "some users" and that it should be fixed by the end of the day. Only they don't tell at the end of which day? (read more)

At first I was angry when I stopped receiving mail. Then I realized, you get what you pay for. There are other free email services out there.

It is obvious they could not afford to maintain their old system, which is why they switched to Zimfail.

Nothing forces them to provide reasonable customer service. If that was important to them to retain customers, they would have taken measures to inform us and resolve the issue quickly.

Same story for me, a user since 1997 when it was mailcity.com Today is Aug 29th and I havent received any email since Aug 25th. No word from Lycos in my inbox that there is a problem. Anyone else having the same problem? I am travelling at the minute and had been emailing people with travel plans and now I cant see my email. So frustrated. Why did they bother switching to something worse? They probably dont even use it themselves, otherwise they would have ditched zimbra in a second. (read more)

Before Zimbra was introduced Lycos was fine, now it is a huge waste of users time , experiencing days of inability to connect with Zimbra servers
As a mail client Lycos is at the bottom of the heap, it will have to change or be fixed because at present it is completely and utterly hopeless

Support is so overwhelmed with problems it can take 3-4 days to get a response
even when Zimbra is available it is extremely slow, and nothing more than a very bad choice for anyone looking for an email... (read more)

Such a shame - i've used lycos/eudora for 15 years - it was once a reliable, easy to use, no frills email facility. Since switching to Zimbra it's become a disaster. Sadly, I think you'll see users deserting in droves and that's a pity. If you want to re-estabish your reputation and grow your user base i would suggest you go back to the previous version of Lycos.
