I have dealt with HSBC in 4 countries - US, UK, New Zealand and China.
In China, they are OK.
In the UK, they are incompetent. They sent me an account statement by post, and someone with HSBC had whited-out someone else's name and account # that was printed on MY statement. I called them about it and the confirmed it was my information and they could not explain why someone else's information had been PRINTED on my statement, and then whited out. This is pure incompetence.
In New Zealand, they are fine.
In the US, they are the biggest nightmare and sorriest excuse for a bank on the planet. It took TEN WEEKS for me to get my checks, debit cards and credit cards. They forgot to issue a credit card for my wife, which took them another FOUR WEEKS to do. They lost forms that were supposed to have been submitted initially, then forced me to get new forms signed and notarized. the San Francisco branch declared to me that they don't pay the highest interest rates because "we don't have to as we are one of the most popular banks". It took them a full WEEK (7 days) to execute a wire transfer for me, and I am a premier customer (this means I'm supposed to get better service). The account manager couldn't explain their products and services and it took nearly two months to get information out of them. A business banking person took 2 months to get me an answer about one of their branches in another country - and then it was only 1/2 the information and something I could have gotten off the website. In short, in the US they are both incompetent beyond belief and arrogant - the worst possible combination.

I am with HSBC for nearly 6 years and I hardly had my account overdrawn except twice in the last 6 years and that too I got overdrawn due to late 1 or 2 days late incoming payments. When I requested for overdraft just for few hundreds, they asked me to provide loads of details, it was like applying for a huge loan.
I can see what you are doing is sensible lending, which is fine and it is good practice. However, it is ridiculous to have such a complex overdraft request process for petty few hu ...- Read Guest's review (374 words)

I hate them!!! They are the most unhelpful bank I have ever been with in the last 9 years. They seem to be good at loosing you money instead of helping you with it, and then they charge you for it. If you go to them for help you go through a long process only for them to send you away empty handed. Each bank seems to have its own policy and the machines are not 100% trust worthy. if there is any mistakes made they blame the computers and they charge for everything.- Read richardbondsmoney's review (92 words)

Over 30 years with Midland Bank plc then HSBC and I have never really needed them, but when I asked them to help with the underwriters of an insurance policy that HSBC sold me they didn't want to know.
They believe they have no obligation to me post sales, which is not in the spirit of FSA "Treating customers fairly" guidance.
Sorry but there is nothing good I can say about them, 30 years and I never needed to speak with them. Gives new meaning to the term fair weather friends ...- Read paulchughes's review (89 words)

I am a victim of Identity Theft. Three years later I am still being hounded by bailiffs for a £4000 debt which isn't mine. I have written and rung the HSBC several times with no result whatsoever. I loathe them. Utterly and completely. Call centre hell. And when I've gone into the branch a lot of chat, a lot of promises and NO RESOLUTION. I'm leaving them next week. Can't wait. And have you actually tried to use their internet banking? There are so many pieces of poor design, endless reque ...- Read Guest's review (103 words)

Premier Service - overrated and I would actively discourage anybody from paying the £20 odd each month. I had good mortgage qualification criteria including a 25% cash deposit and an offer on a flat pending - guess what I am still waiting for my personal banker to arrange an appointment to see a mortgage broker. I am told that if they get a cancellation they will see me? That when all my banking is with this one bank. Upon my last visit I learned all my contact details have not been update ...- Read Guest's review (118 words)

I have held an account with HSBC for 19 years. I was happy with the service at my local branch until they underwent a refurb a few months ago.
If letters were sent out to customers informing them of what the changes were going to be then I would have found another bank.- Read Zaffi's review (169 words)

I have been an HSBC Client for about 7 months now. Even if I just started trading and my account balance was never bigger than 300 / 400 pound, they always talked to me professionally.I needed to open another account in a different currency, and they have called me on the mobile of another country to talk to me, the next day that I requested for information. Also once in London I had a stupid problem with my card, I popped into a branch and straight away a woman helped me to solve my problem and ...- Read marcopetraroia's review (198 words)

Excellent customer service over the counter, excellent internet banking, helpful staff, and above all a good bank. I have overdrawn about 2 pounds twice now and haven ' t been overcharged on my passport account.
A really good bank, I would suggest all to go with HSBC. I wanted money in India and was surprised to know that I could take out money in my hone currency.- Read Guest's review (66 words)

I opened an account with the Midland Bank now HSBC in 1967 on return from soldiering in Aden. It was a friendly local branch and I kept in touch with the manager while travelling the world for many years. HSBC arrived, Manager and Staff changed, moved on, until I became just a number on an account. Internet banking arrived, Impersonal but I thought, left me in charge of my money, wherever I happen to be.Then recently I was locked out for using "Bookmark" option to sign on. If I didn't like what I was getting I would move. The times I have phoned I always get great service even when I left my debit card in a machine in Athens, Greece and walked away. Most of my banking I do on the net. HSBC is very easy to use. Whenever I go into my local branch, the staff are happy, helpfull and courteous... keep up the good work.- Read graemegfm's review (77 words)

The UK HSBC banking experience has been a disappointment all around. I have had the misfortune of having to interact with their staff on three occasions. All three were unmitigated disasters.
Travellers checks - Their own travellers checks they took 5 working days to credit to my HSBC account. Whereas Halifax did it in two days.
Lost my check book, informed them asking them specifically not to resend new the one as I was moving house and had no way of getting it. Guess what they did. When I call ...- Read cwicks's review (190 words)

I have been banking with HSBC since i was 17 years old and have always found them very good to deal with. Over the last year I have been a premier customer and have found some of the benefits very useful, from free holiday insurance to extended warranty on electrical but the preferential interest rates aren't across the board so if you manage your money well this benefit is pretty useless as they dont apply to the higher rate accounts.- Read Guest's review (91 words)

I've banked with HSBC for years, use internet banking, and this is the first time I've had to call them, as there was an ATM deduction made from my account when I hadn't recieved the money. They took far too long to answer the phone and the guy had quite a strong accent, but he's assured me that the money will be refunded to my account within 7 working days. Remains to be seen if it is, but the service seemed OK.- Read Guest's review (103 words)

I signed up to HSBC about 4 years ago now, at the time I had Lloyds TSB and Barclays bank accounts which I still have but they only have about 10 pounds in them. They are always pushing technology, lots of machines in the branches for almost everything, including coffee and win a car. One funny point I noticed is that the color scheme is red, as in as soon as you walk in 'you in the red ' , I have amused myself with that thought now and then.
They have flexible plans for what ever you need, I ' ...- Read nooborpro's review (320 words)

I have banked with HSBC for over 15 years, whilst in University I was given an interest free overdraft of £1500 and a credit card which originally had a limit of £500 later £2000, they also offered low rate loans on a graduate account. When I found myself in financial difficulty and owing no more than about £5000 I went to them for a consolidation only to be told they couldn't help! There was nothing wrong with my credit rating but because I lived in my overdraft I wa ...- Read Guest's review (291 words)

I have been banking with HSBC for a month now. I walked in to open a business banking account. Because I am outside the UK they have arranged an appointment for me on saturday to open the account, after I contacted them via email.
I am Italian, resident in Poland, working in Ireland, with a business in the UK, and yes, they are really the world's local bank.
They could arrange everything for me in minutes. In Italy any bank would tell me to have a normal life first and then go for an account.

Some years ago I inherited money and I became a golden egg for HSBC. I'm now looked after or so HSBC think but that really is not the case. I have a 'relationship manager' who presumably will sort out all of my marriage problems if I asked him. As of yet I've only asked him to help me out with an HSBC problem however there's always time.
I find the fact that I have become supposedly more important annoying because every customer should be important - shouldn't they? Not at most banks it seems.

Due to a bank error on my account, that no one could fix (?) they had to close my account. As the account was in arrears at the time due to a late debit, they listed me as bad debt, now I have a bad credit rating - all apologies from the bank, but no intention of lifting the bad credit rating they gave me. How can a bank function like this?- Read cymm's review (89 words)
