“Simply terrible!”

Written on: 10/07/2014 by Drake416 (1 review written)

I can't even begin to describe how bad this bank is without going in full rage and smashing my laptop. Everything about them is bad. The highlights: - On Christmass morning they called me to say I have to pay them £250 for an account I never used (after 2 meeting they recognised it was a mistake, but it was a big inconvenience to mess up my holiday for them). - I needed a proof of my financial situation one day, they said they can't sign on a bank transaction that states how much money I have… Read Full Review

“Worst bank experience”

Written on: 09/07/2014 by appk (1 review written)

I've moved to the UK from the US and have had the worst experience with HSBC compared to any other banking experience of my life. I don't even know where to begin. They've been completely unable to issue us a debit card and pin that match; in fact, we've received FOUR debit cards (1 to NY, 1 to London, and 2 to our local branch). The customer service, while friendly (though maybe that's the British accent), has been unable to help in any way, and the information in the central bank NEVER… Read Full Review

“Just dreadful! - closing all of my accounts with them”

Written on: 21/05/2014

Tried to get a small mortgage with them. I have a 70% deposit, so only need a small sum - and although I meet all of the normal lending criteria they kept throwing more requests at me to deliver documents which don't exist and therefore could not deliver. Then - for the documents I did send - they lost half of them!! - They had no regard for any of my personal confidential information and that these lost documents (in the post apparently!) could be fraudulently used against me. They did not… Read Full Review

“Re Mortgage Hell”

Written on: 19/05/2014 by DamianJFP (1 review written)

Getting divorced, need to change Mortgage into one name from joint with ex wife? Seriously do not waste your time explaining to HSBC. They point blank refuse even though LTV good, salary more than required and interest rates low. They give numerous reasons which can be proven unfounded, but still hold firm. Most unhelpful bank ever by far… Read Full Review

We have had accounts with this bank since long before they were HSBC, I must admit they are constantly proving themselves to be 'not very customer focused' unless they are trying to 'sell' you a loan or credit card. Looking for a half decent bank to move to.

“HSBC Nightmare”

Written on: 17/04/2014 by Recruitwise (1 review written)

On the 1st/2nd of April HSBC closed our company bank account in error, that is to say it was closed without any request from us and or our bank manager. Initially this meant that several thousands of our money disappeared for 3 days and some of our suppliers went unpaid. On the 2nd of April the call centre at HSBC refused to help, claiming our bank manager requested the account be closed. Our bank manager denies she asked to have the account closed. A complaint was raised but 14 days later… Read Full Review

“TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WEBSITE”

Written on: 03/04/2014 by Pescobar (1 review written)

I'm a bookkeeper for a company that has 21 retail locations. In total we have 25 businesses that have accounts with HSBC and each business has about 3 checking accounts. We're not a small business and the service we get from HSBC is beyond terrible. The relationship manager, Victoria Karamanci totally ignores my calls and e-mails now. They switched from their faulty HSBC Business Banking website to the HSBCNet.com site, which is not user friendly at all and when you call customer service they… Read Full Review

“HSBC customer service is going down!”

Written on: 01/04/2014 by rahmitez (8 reviews written)

I've been HSBC customer for 17+ years, (Midland Bank earlier). I am noticing their customer handling/service is really going down. Their systems are constantly making errors these days, particularly in mortgage applications, and customer support seems useless to find any problems but simply blaming credit history companies. I've instantly checked the other current account providers and decided to cancel their "Advanced" account and move on. As they assesses their customer rigorously, I think… Read Full Review

“A bank that now wants to shed (or sh*ft) retail customers”

Written on: 26/03/2014 by th1234 (2 reviews written)

It's fairly evident now that HSBC and most of the big 4 (who can no longer use retail banking customer funds to gamble on the investment market and then expect governments to bail them out) have decided that retail customers are not for them. I've seen a dramatic drop in the level of customer service over the last few yrs. Email them, no response - but call them. Want issues resolved, you have to chase them up - or you get a generic customer service email. Unless you want to deposit large sums… Read Full Review

“HSBC are as bad as a payday loan company!”

Written on: 25/03/2014 by tim39 (1 review written)

I experienced some financial instability as a result of having the arrival of our first child and could I rely on my bank to help me in my hour of need . . . fat chance! My outgoings were pretty even every month and I rarely used my debit card for extra spending. However, having exceeded my overdraught (a situation which hadn’t bothered HSBC for 9 months previously) they started bouncing direct debits (only one per month). They were charging me £150 every month and then surprised when I… Read Full Review

“HSBC London is not for expats”

Written on: 06/03/2014 by SantosMerritt (1 review written)

I moved to London a month ago from Washington, DC. I have an EU (Belgian) passport and thought that opening a bank account in the UK would be just as easy as it was in the US (took me 1 hour) or Belgium (1 hour, and I was not even a resident or citizen at the time application was made). I went to the HSBC Westminster branch because I saw that they offer tailored services for expats. The interview for opening the account lasted 2 hours, I was asked to provide copies of all my passports, details… Read Full Review

“The Worlds Worst Bank?”

Written on: 08/01/2014 by AngryOllie (1 review written)

I have used HSBC for my current account for almost five years, they are quite literally the worst banking service I have encountered and I am now looking to switch service provider. Apparently I keep failing their internal credit score, however when I ask why they only reply with 'we don't know, we use Eperian/Equifax' funny that because my ratings on both of those is brilliant. Perhaps you just dont like the fact my account rarely goes into my overdraft? That I'm not enough of a risk for you… Read Full Review

Depending on the account you have it affect it in different ways. If it is a basic account and they score you for anything except the initial upgrade to a bank account it will automatically fail you. Their internal score system work on other accounts as you are meeting the minimum criteria of £500 per month. From then on, as long as you don't spend more than you earn your score will slowly increase. Therefore, you should try every 3 months minimum before applying again. Ideally, I would suggest waiting 6 months, if they say they don't know why they do. It would always give them an explanation as to why. If it is to do on the Experian and Equifax, then there something on your credit score. Check on the Experian website it allows you to sign up free for a month, but remember to cancel your subscibtion. However, if its clean and you and print it out and prove it you can go back and ask them to look at it again.

However, if you're looking to switch use the new 7 day switching system do your research before switching to a bank you think would suit you and ask them to start the switching process. Transfers everything DD and SO to your new account and your salary. Hope this helps.

“Big company hates little people, You're just a number.”

Written on: 04/01/2014 by HannaHexagon (3 reviews written)

I had opened an under 18's account when I started work, so when I turned 18 I visited my local branch to talk about the changes to my current account. The lady said I had an overdraft of £200. A few months down the line, I went in to my overdraft by something small like £10 and I started getting insane charge letters through the post; 100s and 100s of pounds! I called to ask what all of these charges were and they told me I didn't have an existing overdraft and that they had charged me for… Read Full Review

That is absolutely ludicrous. As a young customer they should have given you the full refund. Young customer with all due respect, are not the most financially literate. I am sorry to hear that your experience was so bad. They can quite clearly see on their system for how long you have been going overdrawn. It should have been quickly rectified and give you all the different options so that you could have monitored your account.

Written on: 31/12/2013

I have been continuously lied to by the staff at the call centre in India, causing so much wasted time and money on my part. My wife and I moved abroad and tried to transfer money from her HSBC account to my HSBC account. Simple? Not at all. Because they didn't believe my wife was my wife and we were abroad they sent us on so many wild goose chases to try and prove my wife really was my wife. I had to phone countless times. Banking is ever evolving the fact that now more people are required to have bank accounts. Indicates the way things are having to move forward. Like all banks it is your responsibility to keep the account up to date with the correct information. Under all bank policies regardless of the brand they have the right to close the account if it becomes dormant or overdrawn without explanation. Most banks now operate on a no split banking basis. Therefore if you don't use the account they are well within their rights to close the account. As it costs them money to operate and maintain them.

“DickTurpin's bank”

Written on: 11/12/2013

When it comes to business banking HSBC are the electronic version of DickTurpin's pistol mask and fast horse. I tried to resolve an issue with the recent introduction of fees. Unfortunately due to the business restructuring this has caused some issues. You cant go into a branch and speak to a business specialist without booking a few weeks or month in advance. They want people to be more internet/ telephone banking for convenience. Yet if you dont set up the account initally with both your in trouble. If you get locked out you have to fill in forms rather than just reset it there and then. Surely with if they can do it with Personal Banking they should simply be able to do it with Business.

“Concerns regarding the opening an HSBC account”

Written on: 15/10/2013

On making enquiries regarding the opening of an HSBC account at their Union Street branch in Aberdeen, I was informed that I would only be allowed to open an account if I was willing to transfer the contents of all my existing bank accounts, outwith HBSC, to HSBC. Considering the current monetary situation in the USA, the possibility of the onset of another recession, the fact that the FSCS compensation limit is £85,000 per UK institution, it would seem that HBSC is putting their banking… Read Full Review

HSBC doesn't believe in split banking. It survived previous recessions because it has solid foundations and is one of the only banks that didn't require a bail out from any government. Therefore it is quite within its rights to say bring it all or nothing. However depending on what the account is used for, I don't see that you would need to divulge your entire assets that you have in other banks. So if you are looking for primary banking facilities great. Keep your savings secure else where as well separate. Other than that unfortunately with all the new regulations put in place by USA, UK, EU and UN it isnt worth the banks time.

I don't see how they can deny service based on your will to have an account somewhere else. I have one HSBC account and they just told me that I have to close it if I'm opening a new account somewhere else. So, what if I haven't told them I have it, how would they know? Again, what if I don't want to close it, can they close it anyway? How will they close it and what will they do with the money if I just keep ignoring them and I don't want to close it? If they do close it or froze my account, can I sue them for closing my account for no good reason? How will they prove I even have an account anywhere, what if I was lying and just said I have one?

It's a nonsense and it will just do them harm. I will close my account willingly now that I've been informed of this policy. It is like Coca Cola saying "we won't sell you our product if you are drinking Pepsi". It's insulting how stupid this is.

They cannot force you to close the account. There policy has changed ideally they would like your primary banking to be with them so salary and dd. Be aware that certain account to have criteria to match. I would just ignore it. If you don't meet the criteria it will just down grade you can still have the facilties in fact they recently laxed their split banking policy. Hope this helps

“Good bank, cant understand why rating is low”

Written on: 10/10/2013 by sunningdale (3 reviews written)

I have been with the HSBC for about 20 years now. They have always been a good bank for me. Reasonable on charges, good online service and friendly bank staff. The only negative being that they use call centres with non-native tongue staff who can be hard to understand sometimes. They managed to arrange 2 mortgages for me recently where I thought it might be difficult but they managed to pull it out of the bag for me. These mortgages have changed and improved my life. Thanks HSBC !… Read Full Review

“Terrible Service - Trying to Change the name on my Account”

Written on: 10/09/2013 by hphennah (1 review written)

Absolutely awful service. About a year ago I changed my name via deed poll (Nothing special, just reverting back to my birth surname). I sorted it via a solicitor and obtained a deed poll document that was accepted by Revenue & Customs and I was easily able to change the name on my passport and driving license. HSBC, being a law unto themselves, would not accept the deed poll document, new passport & driving license as enough ID to change the name on my bank account - In store, or via customer… Read Full Review
