I've been a Barclays account holder since the age of 12. I was pretty shocked to see all the negative reviews here, but then realised that every bank has a poor review here.

For the record, for anyone who's interested in a positive review, I have never had a bad experience with Barclays. They do everything immediately, everyone at the local branch is knowledgeable and fast-working.

Even though they outsource their call centres, everyone I have ever spoken to displayed a perfectly sufficient command of the English language. I have cancelled my card about 10 times in the past, in fact I do it regularly just to avoid fraud. Never had any problems. Their online banking is good, they have these new PINsentry things that must do some sort of logarithm calculation with your card when you enter your PIN, making banking with them online feel far safer.

I have once been charged £22 for going over my overdraft limit, a practice which I believe is still illegal, but other than that I am extremely satisfied.

I don't know what other people are talking about in regard to getting through the helpline. I get through in about 3 rings...30 seconds...every time I call. You want to talk about ridiculous wait times, call BT!!! Hours and hours.

PS. I really hope people don't this is a paid-for-review. I just honestly couldn't ask for much more from my bank, it's better than my mum's Abbey National, or my Dad's HSBC. I really can't believe I could be bothered to type so much for my bank.

PPS. I've been frauded a few times and, once nudging the Barclays people along by warning them I'll close my account if they don't expedite; they tend to bend over backwards to protect me.

I have been with barclays bank for 10 years and have suddenly just thought what the hell am i doing with them?!

    - There fees system seems manipulative to charge you. It is unclear when exactly you are over drawn.
    - Online my account will say one thing, and over the phone another.
    - After ringing Barclays to find out about some payments on my account today, the advisor tried to sell me home insurance. I said no 4 times but still he persisted in trying to sell.
    - I have been waiting for about ...

Barclays bank is one with an incredible degree of incompetence. They kept sending my debit card to my old address even after i had notified them of the change of address. Thereafter, it was a nightmare getting them to put an end to recurrent fraudulent purchases from my account!!!!!

My card was frozen again today, they said they could not understand why and un-froze my account. They then connected me to customer services to be told it was closed at 11.30m, however I have called many times from 11.30pm-6am with no problems.

After 8 further calls, they opened again stating they advertise it to close at 11pm, however its open 24/7 to speak to customer services.

Their phone systems are all messed up, certain departments take ages to answer. The branches only have half the st ...

Very poor customer service at Barclays Bank. They continually claim not to have received a document that has been physically sent to them (and returned by them) and faxed to them on countless occasions. Apparently their systems are incapable of being wrong so it is me that is mistaken when I think I have sent it (i.e. they are accusing me of lying to them). When I have questioned the efficacy of their systems they have gone on the defensive claiming that I am accusing them of lying ... pretty ri ...

    What a crap Bank,
While using my local Banks AMT, my Barlclay card was swallowed, I fonud out next day, it had been ripped off.
I requested the bank to put a STOP on my account, explaining that I would be out of the counyry for the next month.

When I returned, I fonud out that Barclays did NOT put a stop on my account my account was emptied and I was in the RED, with STO not paid.
In the mean time , I have no money, and have to wait over a month for them to look into things ...

I went to my local Barclays Bank with my son yesterday to open and account for him.He already has an account at Nat West but wanted the same bank as his brother to make transfers easier and quicker. He had an armful of i.d. documents, his passport s currently out of date.He had loads of cards/statements/correspondence from his current bank Nat West including letters from local council including council tax bill. The customer service girl at desk i am afraid was rude and humiliated my son and mysel ...

I went overdrawn by £1.36 for less than 24 hours with barclays bank and was charged £22, which they flatly refused to refund. I admit I was at fault, but the amount of charge is far too high, I have since moved banks because of their poor service

Barclays Bank lies to you - never follow up on a exsisting querry you may have - pass the buck - poor customer service skills - more importantly you pay money into their bank in which they provide absolutely zero service for it!!

The one good thing is that if you can get past the mine field of customer service representives that know absolutely nothing and reach a manager in the /customer service/complaints dept- They are very good in dealing with your problem/complaint. - Just a shame that the ...

Bad customer service, I came across quite a few employers that there were unable to reply to simple questions. Barclays Bank phone service for instance, it took them over 15 minutes to find out the IBAN number of my account. They claimed that IBAN was sufficient for an international transaction when the swift code was also needed.

I live abroad, and have tried, unsuccessfully, to manage my account in the UK with Barclays. My card is frequently frozen, I spend hours at long-distance rates trying to get telephone service, and an explanation for why my card is frozen. I am then, repeatedly, told that my card has had activity outside the UK. I explain that I LIVE outside the UK. I am told that I should have told Barclays before my "trip". I ask them to look at the mailing address on my account... which is in the country where ...

I've been a member of Barclays for 2-3 years now and I've got to say I've not yet had anything approaching good service. We set up a mortgage with them which turned out to be a long and torturous process, riddled with inefficiences, mistakes and general calamity. The call centres are pretty appauling too - if you actually need anything done you're probably in trouble. The only glimmer of light is that the branch I normally go to - the Richmond Upon Thames branch - seems to have improved on its cust ...

I banked with Barclays for over 20 years, but this apparently means nothing to them. My account went into the red when an error on their part took money out of my current account which went over my limit by a £1 or so. I spent so much time and effort trying to rectify their mistake. No compensation offered. Also, I reported £1k that was paid into my account. After investigating they found another customer with the same bank account number (but different sort code) had deposited ...

We have banked with Barclays for over thirty years starting in London, then in our local branch and then it was recommended that we move accounts to an offshore branch for inheritance tax and non-residency purposes. In the beginning of the move, everything went smoothly and they assigned us a superb relationship manager and then her assistant. After we were re-assigned, everything started to go downhill and the emphasis was not on "our needs" but the "bank's profit". During the last two months, ...

I was very pleased with Woolwich before Barclays Bank took over, and by and large, the transition was pretty seamless.
We have had great difficulty in setting up direct debits. We keep getting them returned by the bank, even though we definitely have sufficient fund to pay. The reason they are giving is that they have no DD mandate from the requesting organisation, however try telling companies like Capital One that.

After having my computer hacked into I reported not known transactions going out of my bank account. I had to cancel my card and was told I would receive my new one in 3 to 5 working days. That was 12 days ago. I have rung the bank everyday for the last week and keep being fobbed off. I had all of the money go out of my account and was told there was absolutely nothing they could do to help me. So I sit here 12 days on with no money in my account with bills piling up and no help from Barclays. W ...

Had Direct Debit problems which have been set up but never shown on the online banking. However Barclays claim that I have cancelled this d/d and reinstated it on various occasions and have produced audit reports making me out to be a liar!!! Has anyone had these problems!!! I had to close my a/c as I don't trust them no longer with my banking
