“This is the best car on the road, we have had ours for...”

written by loudavegaz on 05/01/2008

This is the best car on the road, we have had ours for just over a year, it has the best reliability, performance, fuel economy and interior space, and it is also very comfortable on a long journey, it is a great all round car, we wouldn't part with ours.

If you are looking for a really multi purpose vehicle, you will not find a better car on the road today, We have got the 1.9 jtd elx, I can't comment on the other engines but ours is a cracking motor

“When my old Tipo bit the dust I made a checklist for...”

★★★★★

written by Terence Wass on 18/05/2007

When my old Tipo bit the dust I made a checklist for which car I needed next.
Economy, space, aircon and cheap insurance were the most prominent ones.
The Doblo was the only car I could find that fit the bill on all points.

"There aren't many of these about" my wife informed me.
"We only want one" was my reply, and it was one we found. £5000 with 15,000 on the clock. That'll do nicely.

Lets go over the good points

Economy. I have squeezed a real world 70mpg out of this car on long runs. This was achieved by brushing the throttle lightly and keeping it at around 60mph.
Some reviewers haven't managed to achieve this figure, and my advice to them is to drive it so that you can hardly hear the engine.
Day to day driving brings the figure down to 51MPG, and this is my average over the last four fill-ups.

Power. No need to thrash the engine to get it moving; turning onto a slip road at 30 in 4th and flooring it sees you at 80 when you join the motorway. Let the turbos do the work.
The Doblo will happily cruise at 90MPH (I know because I've tested it on my own private race track) and will do 120 without too much complaining.

Space. It's cavernous! We took it camping - two kids, two adults and a Labrador and easily got everything into the boot, including the mattresses off two single beds (can't stand airbeds). No need for footwells full of bags, the boot is big enough for the kids to stand up and walk around in. And of course as we were camping, it poured with rain. Open the boot, sit inside in the dry and get some food on the go.

I also took four really big (dare I say "fat"?) blokes to the pub in it once and they all said "This is big inside!", leg room for all and no reduction in performance either.

Equipment. It doesn't have a sunroof. Good! Can't stand sunroofs, but it does have air conditioning. Climate control would have been a slight improvement here but on my model I have to tell it when I'm too cold and fiddle with the knobs a bit.
The drivers seat is also very comfortable and adjustable in 5 ways. If you can't get comfortable in this, you must be an alien.
As for the passenger seats; Who knows? I'm driving, I'm comfy and that's all that matters really.

Some Doblos have split boot doors but mine opens upwards (mind your head) and this is great, when your loading shopping in the pouring rain, you can stand underneath this and load the shopping in the dry, just remember not to reverse into the space!

Rear doors - they slide. What a wonderful idea. No more telling the kids "not to whack that car" when they get in or out. It doesn't sound like much, but this is just another bit of peace of mind that I really appreciate.

Space and parking. With it's good turning circle, feather light steering and small footprint (which isn't much bigger than a VW Polo, seriously!) parking is a doddle.

Visibility is also fantastic. It's been described by one of my mates as "driving round in a greenhouse". Plus you're quite high up off the ground so visibility over the tops of hedges and parked cars is good.

The cons
As it's a fairly heavy car (about one and a half tonnes) the tyres need to be those reinforced ones and are hence more expensive. I choose Pirelli tyres and they are £50 a pop. If you drive this car in anger you'll shred the front tyres in no time.

The spare wheel is sensibly stowed under the car so you don't have to unload the boot to change it. Unfortunately the jack and wrench are stored under the back seat - so you DO have to unload the boot after all. Friday afternoon job?

The headrest on the middle rear seat obscures your vision in the rear view mirror so I have taken to removing it and putting it in the boot when there's nobody sat there.

The sun visors on the windscreen don't swivel to shield the side windows.
My knee rests on the rigid gear stick cover and this can get uncomfortable after a few hours.

The same problem I had on the Tipo occurs on the Doblo too from time to time- the windscreen wipers sometimes work in a hit-and-miss fashion and you have to fiddle with the stalk a few times to get them to work again. I'm used to this now. I suspect it's some crud in a relay but simply can't be bothered to take a look, it doesn't happen often.

It came fitted with a cassette player. I don't know where they found it, but there you go. I prefer to drive in silence anyway.

Summary.
This is a family car in every way I can think of, from the doors, economy, space and general ease of use. It can also be used to lug stuff about from furniture to 8 sacks of coal (that I forgot where there and drove around for a week with them still in the boot!).
It's no oil painting, in fat it's decidedly van-esque (but not as ugly as the Multipla).

As for reliability, it's been fine so far but is still quite new.
If my previous Fiats are anything to go by however, I'm not worried about it's future; my last car - the Tipo- went round the clock without any major problems.

“I've had a Fiat Doblo 1.9 JTD SX for 4 months and 3000...”

★★★★★

written by cop01sh on 30/03/2004

I've had a Fiat Doblo 1.9 JTD SX for 4 months and 3000 miles, and it's been great so far. We got orange but have seen some great looking metallics about. If buying again, I would spend the extra £120 for the split rear seats, although I haven't needed them yet as the boot is so big. I don't even fold the pram down to transport it these days. A few dodgy points (not to put you off, just for info): my head lamps get condensation inside (I think there's a kit to fix this) and the incorrect rubber stopper as been fittered to the front door openings (the stopper is actually on the car not the door). I've just noticed this one. Basically, when I close either front door, the lower corner, to the back of the car, flexes and momentarily hits the sliding door. As a result, the paint is wearing away and it will probably rust if left unchecked. I'll be taking mine in shortly. So a point to watch, before you take yours home from the dealer.

Anyway in general, recommended. It's nice to be different. I'm planning to convert mine into a weekend camper, with a hammock for the kids. I'd be intrested if anyone else as done this?
