“With Elle Girl we're talking style and individuality....”

★★★★★

written by skyhigh on 04/07/2005

With Elle Girl we're talking style and individuality. If you want to overhaul your complete sense of style and self, then look no further than Elle Girl! The first and only shopping magazine for Britain's teen girls, has the issue sorted when it comes to fashion and to being yourself. Though fashion is the primary focus throughout, they seem to have missed the more important issues many of us teenager's face in today's complex world. Stuff like body worries, sex, boys and life in general. However it seems "Elle Girl" have already sussed this area, instead there is a featured topic each month, with individuals pouring out their souls over their problems, and how they overcame them, though these often do help others facing similar problems. As well as Peaches Geldof's outspoken column. I totally look forward to hearing what she has to say each month, I agree with her debates and how she gets straight to the point, she doesn't care what people think. In this world, I believe if you wanna get somewhere and do something, you have to believe in yourself, that's integrity and Peaches sure has that!
If your looking for a magazine that puts you in the perspective of life, allows your sense of style to take over, gives you the right for your own individuality and independence then you've found it with "Elle Girl".

I like shoes because they make my feet warm. Elle Girl is good for padding your shoes to make them warmer. Elle Girl is a warm magazine. Mmm.

I dislike Elle Girl magazine intensely. It talks about how you must be your own individual and be yourself, but then, all the way through it, it advertises what to wear and not to wear-- CONTRADICTION OR WHAT?! The magazine is basically another advertising scam as this is all I can see it is used for! It's full of shallow, ultra-skinny models (probably anorexic). How does this give a 'be yourself' image???

Excellently put Random Rabbit. However, I wish to include Bliss in the yucky magazines association.

I respect your opinion randomrabbit, but I think you need to think about it seriously. Models are thin because they want to be, not because they are made to be. I know this for a fact, as many of my close friends are models, and I am myself. I think that you are being judgemental by saying they are anorexic, as many people who are anorexic can't actually help it.

And finally, on Elle Girl magazine, I would like to say that you are completely wrong! Elle Girl is a fab magazine, which tries to make people be individual with personality. And as it is a fashion magazine, then it would obviously give fashion advice. I am one of those people who follows the trend, and I am happy that way. My personality and character is individual, and that is my greatest asset. You shouldn't judge the magazine on one or two articles.

It may be true that fashion sets very high ideals of beauty but wouldn't we all be slightly disappointed if models suddenly became ugly? Also naturally thin people deserve just as much respect as heavier people, if weight truely wasn't an issue then surely this would be the case? Elle Girl does not only show these painfully beautiful models though, they have several pages which feature regular people on Britain's streets, celebrating how good THEY look, and these people are not all thin or all heavy, surely this shows that they are not simply showing these pressurising images, but showing young people a wide variety of images and styles, encoraging them to take inspiration from everything they see and to become their own person.

I agree; fashion sets impossibly high levels of "beauty" that is simply not feasible 2 compare a natural body to. However, if someone is going to become anorexic so easily simply by looking at slim people, they would probably end up being anyway as they'd see slim people everywhere anyway! The world is full of shapes and sizes, so if people want to model they shouldn't be stopped in case people feel bad as long as they are their natural weight, although the magazines should include larger people, I agree. Fight the power!

kk, had to reply to that! Don't you also think that the models being 'slim' in these magazines make young girls who maybe aren't so slim feel bad about themselves? That could lead to various eating disorders in an attempt to become like these models! Maybe people are 'naturally slim' but it doesn't mean they can use their bodies and this gift to make other people feel bad!

I think people are always extremely judgemental in saying that all models or slim people in general must be anorexic. A lot of people are naturally slim - get over it! I have been accused of having an eating disorder by people who have never eaten with me, just seen me and assumed I was anorexic because of my size. If I eat all I want and don't gain weight, how can I help it? Shouldn't slim people have the same respect given to them as larger people? And if the models in Elle Girl are anorexic, surely you shouldn't be slagging them off? They'd be ill!

“I don't actually buy this magazine, I've recently...”

written by babyraverkat on 11/08/2004

I don't actually buy this magazine, I've recently transfered myself to Elle. I think it is the best magazine for teenage girls though compared to all the others such as Sugar, Bliss, j17 and CosmoGirl. When it was first introduced it was seasonal, and extremely good, fairly big and with lushious free gifts. However it always happens and as they become monthy, the quality drains. It's still a good magazine, but the first issues were the best. The magazine does not have a dictated style about it, e.g. they do not make you feel like you have to follow a certain fashion which is good, and the magazine encourages individuality.

I think Elle Girl is a great teen magazine beacuse it is full of interesting new and inspiring fashion ideas for the creative soles among us. It caters for many different peoples styles and it full of a fantastic wishlist every month which I can't wait to read. Elle Girl is an individual teen magazine which is good. Sugar, Bliss, J17 are all of a muchness really. They are full of the same pics and interviews and they give you similar freebies each month.
