“My dog ate it and has been in hospital for 3 days ”

written by 17Woodward on 15/09/2015

Do not buy this. I ran out of my dogs normal food and so I let him eat this.By the morning he had terrible diarrhea by the afternoon his diarrhea was total blood and he was admitted in to hospital to be put on a drip and antibiotics. The vet said it was likely the food triggered this episode.

“Green and smelly”

★☆☆☆☆

written by RyanPeters176 on 21/03/2015

If you ever wondered about what you get for your money, I just grabbed a box of Bakers at the local shop. My dogs normally have Burns or another premium brand. After one day on these emergency rations , they have green poop and the poop smells awful. I guess you get what you pay for. The dogs will eat it but I'm not prepared to feed it.

What do people expect when they give their dogs a sudden change in food?
90% of dogs would get the trots and be ill.
Why didnt you just buy Burns for your "Emergency" rations???

“Awful should be banned !!!!!”

written by Menorca14 on 18/05/2014

I stupidly fed my 10 year old female border collie bakers complete most of her life but never again she developed diabetis her glucose level was 22 very high and had to be hospitalised .discussed her diet and exercise routine with our vet and she advised to get her off bakers as in her opinion it's full of rubbish and various sugers we couldn't just stop giving her bakers we had to wean her of it gradually mixing it with chappie wet food and regular insulin shots after 8weeks she's now doing great and has been completely of bakers and has chappie mixed with chicken or turkey and no longer needs insulin her coat is lovely and shiny and she's a happy dog so I would advise any dog owner not to give there dog bakers it's rubbish !!!!

She would run around the lounge like 8 times she become incredibly scatty even after long walks when I asked my vet for advise she told me to take her off bakers and put her on beta and she's a complete different dog still excitable but just a puppy excitable not a possessed puppy...

“Bakers and skin allergies”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 01/12/2013

Partly through my own laziness, I have bought bakers over the last couple of years as it is so easily accessible at supermarkets, I just carried on. My scotty became very poorly with itchy flakey skin with big spots all over him. He would roll around all day trying to scratch them and just became depressed. My vets tried to tell me have may have mysterious disease and wanted to start to slice and dice him. I just sat looking at him one night and I thought, I know my dog, he is not seriously ill. So I decided to shop around and try other food stuffs. I started to buy kibble at the local pet shop and he improved within 2 weeks. Then, I changed jobs and couldn't get to the pet shop before they closed. Before you know it, I was buying Bakers again. And before I realised it, my scotty was covered in spots and super depressed all over again. I'm going to try giving him half a pirition tablet for a few days and I have thrown the bakers away. I have chosen James Wellbeloved as his new food as it is for skin allergies and I am going to see how he gets on. He's eating it so that's a plus! I really think that this allergy has been a result of using Bakers. I make sure that I use non bio washing liquid for his bedding. If this is down to Bakers...... Shame on you.

“Don't ! Just Don't !”

★☆☆☆☆

written by davewatts2000 on 02/11/2013

I am not a reviewer by any means, but this is different. I'd been feeding my JRT this for a good few years and on reflection he never gained weight, never settled or really relaxed around the house (even tho he is 7), Whinged a lot generally about anything, paid lots of attention to his ears and moults he loads. Even tho he is walked twice a day and has loads of toys and things etc I thought there might have been a touch or boredom going on until one night after dinner he started to slink around (if you have a JRT you'll know what I mean!) and lick himself raw. Several vet bills later and no cure in sight i saw something on tv that implied 'you are what you eat'. Accidentally I googled Bakers Complete ... eeeeek !! Cutting a long story short, following the worst bout of nighttime runs i have ever had to clear up I changed his diet to chicken and brown rice with carrots and peas (yep, he was eating better than me!) for 10 days or so while i properly researched dog food brands and types. Gradually I began to replace his chicken and rice with James Wellbeloved kibble. I now have a totally different JRT. The transformation is stunning. Calm and relaxed, fun, mischievous and less windy ! The Bakers Complete label is scary - its full of implications and double talk. If im honest I was definatley sucked in by the advertising campaign. In my opinion .. Bakers Complete - No, just dont, for the sake of your dog ! If I didnt have to give a star on here i wouldnt be. If there was a skull and crossbones id be using that !

“Bakers Good or Bad?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Doglistener on 19/10/2013

I think this says it all. At the time of writing I believe there are 13 Es in their Bakers Complete dog food. If this incorrect, then that is an awful lot of Es Ten of these Es have apparently been flagged as causes of concern at different levels. Additives and Preservatives: Bakers Complete contains 13 E numbers. To put this into perspective, the oft maligned McDonalds hamburger contains 7 E numbers. In Bakers Complete these are used for a variety of purposes, such as colourings and preservatives, and this list includes: Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) - E320 Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) - E321 Propyl Gallate - E310 Citric Acid - E330 Potassium Sorbate -, E202 Propan -1,2-diol - E490 Iron Oxide - E172 Indigo Carmine - E132 Tartrazine - E102 Sunset Yellow - E110 Quinoline Yellow - E104 Titanium Dioxide - E171 Carbon Black - E153 At the time of writing I believe the ten below are still used in the preparation of Bakers Complete. E320 - has been found to be tumour-producing when fed to rats. In human studies it has been linked with urticaria, angioedema and asthma. E321 - banned for use in food in Japan, Romania, Sweden, and Australia. The US has barred it from being used in infant foods. So bad McDonalds have voluntarily eliminated it from their products. “New size boxes”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 12/10/2013

I've just had to buy one of bakers new 1.35kg size boxes ( it was all sainsburys had to offer ) . I don't know weather it was a conscious decision to deceive but the packet inside the box was less than 1/2 the size of the box itself . So not enough to fill their back teeth ! Nice one bakers

“Bakers Complete Dog Food”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 06/10/2013

I started to feed my 8 month mastiff X on bakers complete dog food and within a week he got bold patches on both ears and they was very red, I knew it was not mites or anything like that but he also got a smell on his ears and this was due to a yeast infection in the ears, I changed he dog food to wagg and in 2 weeks the hair on my dogs ears is growing back the yeast infection has cleared, I did also treat the yeast infection. I would never give bakers complete to my dog ever again.

“Made my Puppy very very ill. Resulting in vets bills.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by footsteps on 22/08/2013

Brought this for my 8 week old puppy. He became very ill with terrible diarrhea. At first we thought he was ill so took him to vets. He checked him over and asked abut feeding. When we told him we used Bakers Puppy he frowned and described it as Macdonalds for dogs and to stop using it. When I returned the products we had that we had not opened the pet store said he exact same thing along with Wagg and Pedigree that they regularly get complaints about making dogs ill. I asked why they sold it and they said it was a big seller as it was cheap but it was cheap because it was all oil and wheat bulk, which irritates many dogs stomachs. Have swapped to quality Eukanuba product and with in 2 days he was fine. So be warned this is cheap for a reason it has rubbish in it and could end up with a trip to the vets or worse for your beloved puppy.

“Very Poor Quality Food”

★☆☆☆☆

written by copy on 16/04/2013

I started my 6 mth old puppy on the bakers puppy food a cple of days ago, as my usual brand was not in stock. I won't be using it again, he's been sick and has had terrible diarrhoea ever since! You would think a name as Bakers you would be buying good quality food, but my friend has had the same problem with her older collie dog.

“Big mistake!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by gezzathorpe on 20/02/2013

We have been feeding our border terrier (3.5 years old) on Wagg (not saying it's necessary good) but he has been fine. We recently switched to Bakers for some incomprehensible reason. Almost immediately his stools became yellow and there seemed to be traces of blood in them. He then had two accidents with diarrhea inside the house which he has not done since he was a puppy. We also found excrement or vomit (not sure which) in the garden which was bright red, which we think was blood. We have just starved him for a day then reverted to Wagg and already he has produced normal looking stools. There must be a link!! We think that we will now feed him on unprocessed foods ... it seems to be a minefield with processed dog food.

“Bakers made my dog fat”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Catherine8 on 12/02/2013

My cocker/king charles cross has suffered weight problems and allergies since he was a puppy. On the advice of the vet I took him off Bakers and used the vets own brand of dry dog food. Nothing else in his diet changed but he lost 4 kgs in 2 months. The McDonalds of the dog world!

“Please don't buy!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jan1958 on 28/01/2013

I put my Border Collie puppy on this when we brought her home. As it's a few years since we had a puppy we thought it was more popular and convenient than tinned meat and mixer nowadays so must be better. How wrong we were. When she had diarrhea from the start and we couldn't get her house trained, we put it down to the move and leaving her mum etc, but when she didn't get any better I started to worry and was going to take her to the vet. Then I came across the reviews from others on the web and changed her to pedigree chum tinned food and mixer. What a difference. The change was almost instant, within 24 hours she was perfectly fine and house trained within 2 days. I would never recommend Bakers complete puppy food to anyone.

“DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT”

★☆☆☆☆

written by craglet on 26/01/2013

i had to give a star, i would have prefered not to have but there you go!! this food is terrible, the worst an absolute discrace and should NOT be allowed to be sold to dog owners!!!!!! What bakers do (along with selected other brands) should be illegal, and people who understand how bad bakers is and still buy should have their dogs took off of them!! Eg, You've got a child, would you feed it A,a nice chicken breast with pasta, some salad followed by a glass of fresh fruit juice ..... or B, a teaspoon of chicken, 4 or 5 peas topped with haribo, crushed mars bars, some good old fashioned smarties & some fats. its obvious really so why would you want to but your dog a version a B? when all then need is natural meats and some brown carbs? This product causes many long term illnesses, such as eye and ear problems, skin irritation and reduced natural skin oils, bad breath, hyperactivity, stomach upsets, amongst many other things! If you've got a dog feed it what it needs....meat there are plenty of really good foods out there at similar cost to bakers. if you love your dog feed it properly, my dog almost died due to bakers, and im not just saying this, he experienced many of the problems above and we had many allergy tests done on him and they were all linked to his food!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only animal on Earth that would commit suicide or starve itself to death is a human. Forget animals like Lemmings that was an old wives tale. In some foxhunting kennels they feed the dogs pig pellets that are horrible to eat. That is so they do not fight over the resource with the other dogs. A dog will not starve itself to death. It will eat what you give it given time. Feed the dog twice a day, put the food down leave it ten minutes. If it does not eat it in that time take it away. Feed the same amount at the next feed time, do not double it up. Dogs understand cost and consequence and will learn to eat the food you give it. Dogs are fussy because of us, we create the problem by constantly giving tasty titbits, or food that has taste enhancers that are not generally good for the dog. Dogs like baker because of the Fats and Sugars along with many other ingredients that are not good for dogs. For this dogs sake you should try and wean him off this food. I feed my own dogs (I have 7) on fish4dogs and raw. If a dog is fussy it is worth buying the salmon mousse that they manufacture, that can be mixed in with the kibble. Why don't you pop to a pet shop and see if they will give you samples for him to try. Our local pet shop sell stock from the self and you could probably take him in to try. Bakers may seem cheap but in the long run, you may run into heavy vet fees if things go wrong. It is better to feed the dog food which is nutritious. Someone explain bakers to me like feeding a child on fast food burgers every day. I bought a big bag of James Well beloved and my dog eats 2 portions each day. Even the lady who grooms him occasionally said she noticed the difference in his temperament as well as his skin.

Pets at home do an own brand that is not labeled as Pets at home but has been highly recommended as it is wheat free and very good apparently it's the wainrights stuff. Our dog has been fine on it ever since we swapped. He also likes Butchers tripe but that is wet food.
