“No..sorry - I dont think its a good food.”

Written on: 22/04/2013 by Haywardsdave

My staffy has put on a lot of weight with this food. I have a feeling it is high in fat. I have been feeding her Bakers for about a year but she has had some health problems and put on a lot of weight. I decided to try her on low fat Iams and she has really improved after just a few days. Her stools are darker and more solid too. Anyone wanna but 20Kgs of Bakers as I wont feed my dog with it again..!! I think its just too high in fat..!! (read more)

“Very Poor Quality Food”

I started my 6 mth old puppy on the bakers puppy food a cple of days ago, as my usual brand was not in stock. I won't be using it again, he's been sick and has had terrible diarrhoea ever since! You would think a name as Bakers you would be buying good quality food, but my friend has had the same problem with her older collie dog. (read more)

“Big mistake!”

Written on: 20/02/2013 by gezzathorpe

We have been feeding our border terrier (3.5 years old) on Wagg (not saying it's necessary good) but he has been fine. We recently switched to Bakers for some incomprehensible reason. Almost immediately his stools became yellow and there seemed to be traces of blood in them. He then had two accidents with diarrhea inside the house which he has not done since he was a puppy. We also found excrement or vomit (not sure which) in the garden which was bright red, which we think was blood. We... (read more)

“My dog has always thrived on it - she is now 12 years old”

Written on: 08/02/2013

It's been a great diet for her, used in measured amounts and fed twice per day. Make sure your dog always has plenty of fresh water and don't give too many treats. In addition to regular health checks etc and lots of love and exercise. The negative reviews seem to relate to possible other problems or secondary issues. There is a lot of choice out there and a lot of money to be made, so beware of unproven hypes relating to 'all in one' foods. I am currently comparing for a food that will... (read more)

I put my Border Collie puppy on this when we brought her home. As it's a few years since we had a puppy we thought it was more popular and convenient than tinned meat and mixer nowadays so must be better. How wrong we were. When she had diarrhea from the start and we couldn't get her house trained, we put it down to the move and leaving her mum etc, but when she didn't get any better I started to worry and was going to take her to the vet. “Mood changes”

Written on: 17/01/2013 by Vdubs23

As my puppy had stopped eating his Royal Cannin we purchased some bakers puppy from Tesco and he loved it. After a couple of days we noticed a change in him, terrible wind, having accidents in the house and his temperament started to change. He had started to snap at people when he had his treat bone and he was always hungry even though he was eating more than ever. After reading reviews and hearing that Bakers is not a good food source I have to wonder if this is the cause of his... (read more)

Craglet's Response to Vdubs23's Review

Written on: 25/01/2013

nooooooooo.
worst thing you can feed a dog, I work for a pet food chain and the amount of trouble you can get yourself into feeding this to your dog is unreal.
1, hyper-activity
2, more toilet stops
3, mood changes
4, stomach upsets (loose stools)
5, dry skin ( dog always ichy)
6, fur changing colour (often to an orange or red tint)
7, paw chewing
8, eye & ear infections
This food is basically like feeding children haribo mixed with mars bars, good old fashioned smarties with a tiny lump of beef in for substance.
The food claims to be 26% meat with 4% beef, the 4% beef is correct but the remaining 22% is whatever meat is available at the time, and more often than not, carcass, or offal, giving little or no nutritional value to your dog at all. The remaining of the food is made up a cereals, wheat, sugars and various oils and fats.
Point to take note is that cereals are bulking agents so you have to feed your dog more than you think to give it the nutrition it needs to be healthy, also dogs cannot naturally digest wheat products, meaning that instead of passing through, the wheat absorbs into the body and is the main cause of most of the illnesses above, the beef flavour is the cause of the paw chewing and the colourants is the cause of the fur changing colour.
PS do not change to royal canin, although this is a much better food is still contains wheat and cereals.
Look into Taste of the Wild, Acana, Origen, Collards or James Wellbeloved.
All these foods are wheat and cereal free and will prevent many illnesses in your dogs.

Not surprised to hear that, Bakers is just about the crappiest dog foos available.
Most of the additives in it are unfit for human consumption and banned in many countries and it has a well known history of inducing bad behaviour and hyperctivity in dogs because it contains things like Tartrazine and Sunset yellow, names you may remember from the 1980s when they were linked to similar behaviour in children.
Just google the additives in it, you'll be shocked at what you read, the stuff isn't dog food it's a profitable dumping ground for additives that cannot legally be used in human food anymore.

“Nearly Killed my dog!”

A few months after our dog had been on Bakers, he started to get itchy bleeding skin, sneezing and runny eyes and bleeding out of his rear end. We did not know what was causing it and after a £600 vet bill realised it was his food. He is now on Arden Grange and is happy and healthy. His poo is normal and he does not have bad wind anymore. Bakers gave him anaphalaxis and he was in the vets on a drip for days, I really thought he was going to die. This food should be taken off the market!!! (read more)

A friend gives her dog Bakers Complete and when my dog stays with here she had it there. Her tummy did not get upset and so I tried the weight control variety at home. Since she's been eating it, her stools are better, she does not get up in the night 5 times to go out and she loves the food. Ergo... they must be doing something right! (read more)

I respectfully suggest you carefully look at the ingredient list and do a 'google' on all the ingredients listed. Until you do this, like 99% of people, you will not understand what the ingredients actually are. The reason for this is that most pet food manufacturers do not want you to understand what goes into their pet food. Once you understand what goes into to pet food and what animal derivatives' etc are, I very much doubt that you will want to carry on feeding this to your dog.

poor dog... please read the ingredients list, and look up the 'e' numbers on the internet to see what damage they can cause. often the effects may not be seen till the dog is older, skin tumors etc, but by then it can be too late. just because he enjoys it, does not mean its good. most children would enjoy a diet of sweets and burgers, but they should not be given it.

Bakers is the canine McDonalds! The fancy colours and shapes are designed to appeal to the purchaser - NOT the DOG! The dog doesn't care what it looks like, just how it tastes, and it may well suffer as a result of consuming the colourings and preservatives they put in the stuff.
One highly respected Border Collie rescue centre makes it a condition of letting you have a dog that you undertake NEVER to feed it Bakers Complete! (It's stated in the agreement you sign). Now THAT must mean something! (read more)

Nand's Comment

There are a lot of Border Collie Rescue and working dog rescue centres saying the same, and they should know. This stuff is terrible. If you can, get your dog on a raw diet, though you can't just change overnight, it takes time. Dogs on a raw (BARF) diet rarely have fleas or health problems (unless generic), which just goes to show they don't need fancy colours, shapes or flavourings, as this reviewer quite rightly says.

Bakers complete is owned by Purina which is then owned by Mars, a large TNC, they do not care about your dog, they only care for money, look on the back of your Bakers packet and read the ingredients, the first will be meat and animal derivatives (these are not human grade, bone etc) reading on will show that this is only in the 'meaty' chunks (minimum 4% of the flavour) there are 9 different kibbles in bakers, there is next to no protein in the food, the colourings are not for the dogs benefits they are for the humans visual aid do you really think that they are peas and carrots? My dog is on Baker's Senior, was on another food two years ago and became very ill - not blaming the food, and she would not eat and when I did get her to eat she was being sick and diarrhea. Kept changing foods very slowly and eventually found Baker's Senior she would eat and she was solid and not sick. So, for her it was good. (read more)

I don't normally go for this review thing, but, I've recently aquired a boarder collie pup, fed him the usual puppy stuff for the first few weeks then onto Bakers.
Nice packet, right price, what do I know ?
But, your other writers are correct, he goes mad shortly after eating this, poos for England, generally badly behaved.
I changed to 'normal dog food and mixer' good dog again !

It sounds like the stuff Bakers make it with is suspect.

Bakers complete is full of rubbish ingredients. It is like feeding your kids smarties!!! I have seen first hand dogs fed on this food with health issues, hyperactivity, bad toilets, bad breath and poor condition. Just because a food has good adverts and looks pretty doesn't mean it is doing your dog any good at all!

I feed Whites premium. Both are excellent value for money and the dogs are so healthy on it with no runny poos or bad breath anymore!! (read more)

our dog ate the food nicely and enjoyed it but he chewed his bed up which he never usually did and he was excited after he had ate. It was good that it had a variety but our dog oscar just looked like he was filling out a lot and we were only giving him 3 cups a day. (read more)

That's coz it is rubbish!
I am a nutritionist and you can almost guarantee that when someone comes to me and says they have this problem or that & I ask what they feed it's Bakers. Probably 8 out of 10 times.
For goodness sake stop using it and feed something decent! (read more)

I've had no problems using Bakers complete. I think there's a bit of a witch-hunt going on in cyber space to rubbish this product. My 5 year old spaniel has had no undue side effects as some people have mentioned. He didn't become hyper, he didn't 'poop for England'. We have tried a different (premium) brand after people telling us how incredibly bad Bakers was; and I have to say it's not great. On the very expensive food my dog's skin appeared itchy and a little flaky, he was soo... (read more)

My 5 year old spaniel had problems this evening with this. I am quite worried presently, I hope she calms down soon. With a cocker spaniel, she doesn't need to be made hyperactive.
