“Low grade food.?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 285Hood on 21/02/2016

Many years ago Whiskas was considered the best cat food on the market. Now they keep reducing the meat content, making it cheaper and cheaper and filling it with fillers/bulkers. Neither of my cats will even go near the bowl when I have tried to feed them with it. In fact one of my cats actually wretches the other turns her head quickly like the smell is off putting. I tried to give some to local stray who also walked away. I don't care care cheap it is now it is false economy and the manufacturers bank on the fact that we are never going to taste it for quality. Come on Whiskas - how about you comment on all the complaints?

“A sloppy mess!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Greene476 on 07/09/2015

Everyone keeps complaining about the smell but what about how just generally all around disgusting it is? I open the pouch and the slime that they want to call gravy just slops out all over the counter and the wall! It's so gross.

“Prawns in jelly makes my cats sick!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/03/2015

My 3 cats have been living abroad so haven't had Whiskas for 6 months. On our return to UK I bought Whiskas in Jelly ((a giant box of assorted fish flavours) On the two occasions I gave them the prawn flavour they vomited violently within 5 minutes of eating. Needless to say I will not be buying this food again and all the uneaten pouches have gone in the bin. Something has definitely changed with this product as my cats loved it previously. This particular batch really stinks. I have contacted Whiskas Customer Services to complain and sent them samples. I am waiting for the 'Quality Managers' to pass judgement.

“MY CATS WERE WHISKAS CATS...WHAT CHANGED!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Saxie1957 on 22/11/2014

I have four cats, all four used to be Whiskas cats. Their favourite was the Whiskas in Jelly in the Green Box... Whitefish, Prawn, Lamb and Rabbit. Now my cats won't touch any of it. I've tried different flavours of Whiskas but my cats refuse to eat it. I heard tell that the makers of Whiskas had started filling the product out with Cereals (which probably accounts for the disgusting smell!!) I was lucky enough to find some of the "old" formulation in one of the Value Stores for £2.00 a box but when that ran out I was stumped so I changed brands and my cats are happy once again...BUT my purse is far from happy!!:-( What on earth have they done to the formulation that makes former Whiskas Cats hate Whiskas??

“Whiskas Simply – simply cheated out of 180g?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Pamela36 on 04/12/2013

I bought this new product in good faith. The box of 12 pouches was on a special introductory price at Tesco. When I got it home I took out a pouch and noticed that it seemed smaller and lighter than usual. The usual pouches contain 100g of food. I examined the box and finally found that the actual weight of each of these pouches were only 85g! This fact is not clearly advertised and I finally found it on the bottom right hand corner of the box where a regular consumer of this type of product would not be expected to look. We naturally assume that we are getting the usual 100g so the price is very attractive. I might be feeling a little cynical but I feel cheated out of 180g of cat food and I wonder, do Whiskas want us to believe that this product is so tasty that our cats can't get enough of it? Well, I've had more than enough of Whiskas and on principle, am switching to another brand.

“MAggot Infested Cat Food”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 19/08/2013

I recently bought two twelve packs of tins of whiskas - in jelly and in gravy. When I cam to open the plastic wrappers two weeks later BOTH consignments were covered in maggots and both had burst cans where the maggots had started to escape from the tins. I have never come across such a disgusting mess before and I will never buy Whiskas again. This used to be a premiums brand - what on earth happened !!!!

Remember your not the one who's eating it the cat is

“This food stinks! ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 02/11/2012

We picked up a box of this for our new kitten as this is what she was used to and we didn't want to cause any upset tummies the first week. She ate it eagerly, but afterwards she would stink of some rotten meat. The food isn't that great either considering it has such a low meat content and high filler content. Their cans "with jelly" contain added "vegetable protein extracts", typically added to boost the protein content upon analysis, but vegetable proteins aren't metabolized well by cats at all. They also lump (unidentified) "meat and animal derivatives" as one ingredient, so you don't know how much of the content is meat and how much is organs, for example. It's not the worst food, but you could do MUCH better, and the house won't stink to high heaven of rotting animals.

I have a diabetic cat and have learned that whenever I've given him cat food with 'vegetable protein extract' in it his blood glucose goes through the roof! (I know this because, like an increasing number of owners of diabetic cats, I routinely test his blood glucose at home). I find it rather worrying that this ingredient is included in cat foods at all...

“This stuff is absolutely stinking!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 29/08/2012

I have used this for my cat for the 4 years we have had the cat. However, during this summer the cat is turning her nose up at the food, and each sachet is absolutely stinking. The smell pervades the whole house. It smells like something has died! What has changed? Are the manufacturers doing anything about this problem? I have a large 48 pack and I am going to have to put them all in the bin and change the cat on to some other kind of food.

Is there anychance that those who were taken aback by the smell of said Whiskas cat food can recall what flavour it was?? We are having our own spat with Mars having bought 3 boxes of 48 jelly pouches (for the price of 36)from Tesco (this year) out of which some 28 units, all the same flavour, were totally rejected on each occasion presented by our two moggies. Any assistance wld be very valuable or direct to leigh.kemble at yahoo.co.uk

written by on 08/12/2010

The specific culprit which has driven me to write today is "Oh so Meaty" Delicious Meals in Gravy. On two occasions recently I have bought Whiskas Pouches when the preferred food was not available. I will not be buying this brand again under any circumstances because of the really bad smell or should I say stink from this food which pervades the house. It lingers for hours and is not only very unpleasant but embarrassing when visitors call. Today the temperature where I live (Ayrshire, Scotland) is minus 11, so I cannot even open windows. The upside is that the starving starlings seem to love it. They're very welcome to it.

written by on 30/09/2010

We bought our cats whiskas steamed fish in jelly pouches a few days ago, and since then my house has been stinking, thinking it was the left over cat in the bin, I put the bin outside. But the smell persisted, I have now realised it is the whiskas food in their bowls that is stinking my house out. I thought I was spoiling my cats by getting them whiskas, not so! I now have approx 10 pouches left and am seriously thinking of binning them and getting kitekat again!

Whiskas is just a really bad cat food. It is only 4% real meat/fish content and the rest is just "fillers". They are also only 85g pouches and if you use the ones in gravy, most of it sticks inside the pouch so you lose food and money.

It is not surprising that most of the supermarkets are now offering "2 for £5". Obviously not selling.

I certainly won't be buying this awful stuff any more.

“My cat used to 100% love Whiskas in Jelly untill about...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/08/2010

My cat used to 100% love Whiskas in Jelly untill about 5 days ago when we purchased some more, we didn't realise what the problem was at first, the cat suddenly stopped eating and became lethargic, listless, and went to find a place to die, and just laid there shutting down, we just thought it was her time to die, we didn't want to upset her any more by dragging her to the vet to be poked and prodded, we thought it was her time, and would let nature take its course, we never thought for one minute IT WAS HER FOOD that she had been eating for so long that had over night ALL OF A SUDDEN MADE HER VERY ILL.

Then all of a sudden after 4 days of us trying to gently encourage her to eat something (we tried more than one flavour of Whiskas by the way, but had no luck!!) we decided to try a DIFFERENT BRAND and voila!

She is now much better, has gone back to her happy self, couldn't eat the food quick enough!!! We are so happy...

WARNING :- So just a hint for other loving cat owners, if you think your beloved cat has neared that time we don't want to think about....
STOP and think about changing the food... it is worth a try!!!
For example .. The manufactures may have changed an ingredient to one that your cat can not tolerate!!!

I hope this helps someone help there cat, sometime in the future...

I found this review very helpful because... I too have noticed over the past few weeks that the Whiskas in Jelly food has had a quite foul smell and our cat (Nelson Buggerluggs - Nelson because he was born blind in one eye and Buggerluggs because he was such a naughty kitten) quite often just glared at me and walked off when I served it up.

Have tried Sainsbury's own which smells REALLY foul and we are now on Felix which does smell but not so bad!

Thank you for this. My three maine coons have suddenly refused to eat this.
I took one to the vet yesterday because he was so listless and tired.
He has has to have injections. Still refusing to eat. I'm going to throw it all away.
It's too big a risk to take.

Also bought Wiskas pouches on offer instead of Felix. My cat was sick instantly and seemed unwell for a couple of hours after. The smell of the pouch was horrid, I had to double wrap it to stop my bin smelling. I have emailed the company and will be very interested to hear their comments. Suggest if you have also had problems to do the same. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

“WHISKAS CAT FOOD IN JELLY ”

WHISKAS CAT FOOD IN JELLY

Yuck!! - I have 3 cats between the ages of 10 and 8 years old. All their life they have eaten Whiskas in different forms, the jelly fish & meat, gravy and the kitten boxes (even as adults) But since mid 2009 I noticed that the cats started going off the food so changed to Kite Kat, but now from late 2009 to 2010, apart from Whiskas kitten none of the cats will eat the adult Whiskas cat food. Years ago I saw a documentary that companies use bits of meat that is not sold for humans for cat and dog food. But I have to wonder if the meat Whiskas is now using is even fit for consumption period!

If you have ever had a chicken or meat that has spoiled, think of that and multiply by 20!!!!! that is how completely Whiskas cat food in jelly stinks out of the packet now. God help you if you have it in your house overnight in the bin - it smells like a dead person that has been decomposing for a while, which leads me to think that Whiskas is using meat that is so low grade that not even animals should eat it.

I know buy Felix and the cats are loving it.

Having a similar experience to other reviewers...the stuff absolutely stinks, when I get back from work the whole house smells of it. Nasty. I had been thinking it was the warmer weather but it's vile straight from the pack. Relieved to see other people having the same experience, thought it was just us...will not be buying it again!

“We have fed our cat on Whiskas since she first came...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 19/02/2010

We have fed our cat on Whiskas since she first came along --and she's about 18yrs old now!
However, this company have obviously changed the recipe, and *downgraded* the product, --probably to increase profits?

So many companies seem to try this trick, and it backfires on them, --they end up losing their market share!

Whiskas used to be one of the more expensive/premium cat foods, but we were okay abaout paying the extra, because that was all our cat liked to eat. But now we are searching around for another brand and will never buy Whiskas again.

Who are the makers of Whiskas trying to fool? They are seemingly adding far too much water to the product now, and the 'jelly' stuff obviously isn't actually based on a *authentic* meat product?

Whatever... but they can't fool my cat! Just as nature intended, she's a carnivore, and loathes 'vegetable matter' in her food, (it actually makes her vomit) but Whiskas are seemingly now bulking their catfood out with more vegetable-based stuff, and less real / actual meat product.

Results =
1. Cats don't like it / won't eat it, and...
2. cat owners feel aggrieved with the company,
3. = a bad reputation begins to circuate, and
4. the company loses it's market share / profits.

A sensible policy? I think not!

Btw: the products my cat will no longer eat, is the whole of the Whiskas canned food range.
