“Box says strong and malty, but tastes weak to me.”

★★☆☆☆

written by kevin2105 on 27/01/2014

This is not a bad tea, but as a premium brand which charges accordingly, I expect much more. If you are going to state strong and malty on the box, then make it strong and malty. I use 3 bags in a small, 2 cup tea pot and even after 5 minutes, the tea is still weak. The only time it has actually been strong enough is when I left it for 15 minutes by mistake. Then it was nice, but lukewarm. Maybe they could try putting more tea in the bags. This is a very poor tea in comparison with the far cheaper Thompson Punjana brand, which I'll stick to in future.

As an utter 'tea shaman', I have had the privilege to go to Assam in India and sample the finest Assam tea in the world, as well as Dharjeeling during their second flush and Pu-Erh in China, with its deep, earthen red quality. I must say that as a teaophile, Assam is my favoured breed and the offering from Twinings is in fact a very good variety. It has malty overtones that aren't as striking as the batch I tasted in India but it has the wonderful sweet (but not cloying) 'tea-y-ness' that we Brits do so love. It doesn't take me back to my time in Assam, but instead to an era in British history where tea drinking was an art. Perfect as a coffee substitute in the morning and a nice refresher in the afternoon also. Not the best but a decent product, especially for a teabag. ALWAYS drink with milk, as my guide Shree said, 'Assam was created for milk.'

Twinings Assam is a refreshing lighter Assam, not as full bodied or malty as others. Probably good for a mid-day tea. but not very complex it's just not quite there flavor-wise.. Think a lager instead of an ale.

“Twinings Assam tastes like 'normal' tea - it's not...”

Twinings Assam tastes like 'normal' tea - it's not funny flavoured like lapsang souchong or Earl Grey. It tastes like Tetley. That's meant as a compliment. Nothing like PG tips. I discovered that Tetley is made from a high proportion of Assam, whereas PG tips (which I don't like) doesn't have a high proportion of Assam. So, in a nutshell, if you like Tetley, you'll love this; if you prefer PG tips, you probably won't.
