With the Toshiba RD-XS30SB Digital Video Recorder you can record up to 78 hours on minimum quality. I leave it on the LP setting which gives 51 hours which is easily as good as VHS SP. The settings go right up to super quality just 13 hours on the disk but I've never used this. Every programme can be set to record on a different quality setting (including timed recording). You can record up to 5 hours on DVD RAM. You can also create DVD -R's from HDD recordings. The timed recordings setup is advanced, all the usual VHS type settings, plus you can set programme name and genre. Several pages of recordings can be set up. The unit will remember what is on each DVD RAM using the library function where you can sort and find programmes by date, name, genre etc. The remote can be set up to work your TV basic functions( On/off, AV switch, sound and channel) There's space remaining buttons, SCART pass through, time bar (how far you're into a recording) jump to whatever period of a recording you like i.e. 1 hr 35 mins. A chapter divide button. I often use this by pausing a video and then frame advance to just when the adverts start then pressing chapter divide, I do the same when the ads stop then I can go into the setup delete the adverts and save the lot to a DVD -R. The advanced edit functions are amazing but to me are more than I need. It's almost a video editing suite in a box. There's also Timeslip. If you're not sure you're going to be in on time, or someone calls you in the middle of a programme you're watching, set it to record, then when you're ready you can watch the start ( with all the usual pause, rewind, stop, fast forward features )before the programme is finished. Plus of course you can record things while watching another recording or a DVD. If you can afford it, buy one.
