convinced me that my antivirus program wouldn't work was because my computer needed to be cleaned up. well they cleaned me out. I agreed to pay $169.99 for their services but they charged me $555.23. they said it was a systems problem but they are supposed to fix problems not to create them. impossible to talk with anyone. had to cancel my charges on my credit charge, nobody ever answers a email. My Avast! Firewall stop working; after contacting Avast I was instructed to uninstall than install again which didn’t work. I received several e-mails requesting different screen shots. A week of screen shots past and Avast e-mails stop. I sent an e-mail to customer service; never received a response. They sell this software but they can’t seem to fix it. (read more)

I've had a brilliant experience with avast, I've got the free version which seems to give good protection from most of the general malicious stuff on the internet. Through purely my own stupidity I managed to get a trojan on my system at which point I went to the avast forums where one of the techs, Essexboy guided me through the removal of the trojan through a series of easy-to-follow instructions and my system is clean now, which is just great. Have been a user of Avast for some time using the free version and then onto the full paid Internet Security version. The software is OK and thats it, it doesn't stop everything and I once had to reinstall and clear a bug from one machine. My computer is now full of cockroaches wanting to be stepped on to win something or punch some girl to win something else and I can't get this junk off my computer. I ONLY recommend Avast to all of my clients; it catches nasties that its competitors miss time and time again. Great app that does what it says. A word of caution though - I've recently been installing the v8 Beta, and on two machines, it gobbles up 99% of RAM at startup. XP sp3 takes about 12 minutes to boot, and you have to start and stop a scan to get it to drop RAM useage. Works fine on Windows 7. I tried norton and a few others but they didnt work! avast cleaned it up. This is basically the only anti virus I would and will ever use, even though I rated this average, could be better. I like the fact that it has an option to scan the boot sector of a hard drive, which is what most others miss. I purchased their internet security, my computer got stuck with it, unable to remove it from my computer, uses tons of memory, web shield non functional, their scan won't work. They told me to uninstall , gave me directions that didn't work ( use safe mode, then their uninstall feature), but it was impossible as internet stopped with safe mode. I'm a small IT business owner, I design and build workstations, remove malware etc. For customers on a budget I'll set them up with free A/V software. Also this review page sucks as well.. what banned words? At least give us a list of banned words so as not to waste our time writing these reviews. I'm soooo done with AVAST!!! I e-mailed on Wednesday via their support desk, and marked it as an emergency, and received no response to this day. My Avast internet security stopped working on July 4th .I have 2 mo left on my subscription. I have put in 2 tickets to Tech. Support, and tried their Toll free number that no one answers. After listening to canned music twice for 30 min.I gave up .I haven't received a reply on either tech support ticket.The security program seemed to work well enough until this incident.The lousy response to a customer problem will end any further usage of their products. I've been an Avast! user for many years. I've recommended it to hundreds of people, until now. It seems the marketing team have gone mad. Avast! now comes with annoying pop ups that rise from the bottom of the screen to about half way up. It tells you that the free program is no longer good enough and invites you to buy the full version. This frightens users who think the product no longer works. It is having a detrimental effect. It kept repeating itself so much that I was thinking maybe Avast wanted me to buy further protection to what I was getting from the free version. This antivirus suite is very comprehensive and fairly unobtrusive to be free. However, the on demand scanning speeds are terrible and the automatic updates lock up my machine for at least 30 to 45 seconds. At boot, I had to plan on spending almost a minute for my machine to respond due to the auto-update taking precedence over everything else and freezing my machine. I had an almost identical experience in June 2010; took a month for them to recognize the credit. I'm convinced the fault is with their US sales rep/partner, Digital River, Inc. (DRI)in Minnesota. Check 'em out with the Better Business Bureau. Avast! has a lousy record with those trying to reach them, to complain, or demand a credit when they finally give up. This May and June I fought them through that BBB. The reason this time is that they used my Cr Card to automatically rebill me for the coming year. BUT their bill was an unforgivable $223.10 ($53.11 to Avast!; and $159.99 to their tech partner, iYogi, a firm in India. No way! Worse, DRI, as you'll see from the BBB website on Avast!, they make themselves almost impossible to reach under these circumstances. Check it out. If you'd like, send me an email, and I'll attach much more detail about this complaint. I'm softhaus@charter.net.

My only problem with Avast has been the tec support contracted to iyogi tec support. I had a subscription to iyogi and found them to be a night mare With pressure to extend the subscription and to buy McAfee.

This sucks! I just purchased McAfee via a Cox bundle. Now, decided to replace that antivirus for Avast because a trusted source recommended I remove McAfee and load on Avast.

i have avast free for more than 2 years, it is by far the lightest antivirus ever only 2mb ram at the moment scanning speed is quite fast, it had detected usb viruses unlike eset i had before, through this period of 2 years i had changed a lot of antiviruses kaspersky was heavy , norton internet security cased me some firewall problems with online games eset didn't detect usb viruses(version 3) haven't tried avira or avg , so right now i'm back to avast , you can't evel feel it's working... I had serious problems after installing Avast Free on a PC running Windows7 64-bits. Would that be because I did not want to uninstall Trend Micro before I had Avast up and working or would there be some other reason? The PC refused to do anything at all until Avast was uninstalled.

Most anti-virus software will conflict with each other. Do a search for installing two anti-virus programs and you should find detailed reasons why not to do this. Also if you uninstall any program you need to make sure it uninstalls the complete program . Some anti-virus companies have a free uninstaller program to do just that. Go to their website to download. This should fix or avoid any problems. I hope this helps.

I have used Avast for about 12 months, but the latest upgrade to version 6 has caused major problems. It is the cause of my pc freezing/failing to initialise and I have now had to deinstall and re-install three times. When running it is good, but the lack of control of the update downloads is an issue - why cant you schedule an update when the network is quiet and I'm not busy?

This product is free and for that it deserves 5 stars all day.
The scanning speed is fast and effective and found some very nasty little criters on my computer.
The new interface is much better than the old one and is easy to find your way around.
I had one problem but after contacting the UK avast partner at www.avosec.com it was easily resolved.

I've just removed Avast after finding it was the cause for my entire computer freezing and me having to reboot it, which was really great in the middle of gaming! Not to mention the hassle of re-registering the free version when 90% of the links on Avast's website came up as not being able to be found! Really, for a free version, re-registration shouldn't be needed anyway. I've now installed a AVG and it found a Trojan that was not picked up while Avast was running.

Easy installation, Very good at detecting malware etc. But less effective against scareware, It seems to be freindly with Rogue. I did not like that it missed a few malware and phissing sites. I done a test and I used 10 malware links, it faild 5 of them and left 2 dangerous programs still running, it left many excutable files behind, I would not reccomend it to anyone AVG,Kapersky,Bitdefender,Microsoft Security Essentials,Norton,Trend Micro Titanium and yea thats pretty much it. :) P.S... Personally, I bought the Avast! free antivirus so of course i think that it is a good value for your money. I've had avast! for over 3 months and find it fantastic! Of course since I have the free version, it limits my protection to virus' found in networks and files. A con about it is that it takes a fairly long time to get a quick scan on your computer and a good half an hour to get a full scan.
