I recently got an electric meter put in from yourselves and was topping up an awful lot. When i phoned it seemed that within the space of a month i had put £180 into the meter yet i had only used £30 worth of power. I checked my meter and noticed i had only 4p electric left so i went to the shop and got £30 put on my meter key put it in the meter and it took all that also and left me with the 4p. It all seemed OK with Scottish Power until my fixed contract was about to end. There was no opportunity to plan a switchover to a new tariff on the day my contract was ending, in advance. I was told that I had to arrange this switch on the day of my call, not on a future date. I wrote an email to complain about the lack of this opportunity to plan the changeover a few weeks in advance. No response came, not even an acknowledgment of my email. Brick wall. I waited until the day before the... (read more)

As I reviewed this in the electricity section for Scottish Power I shall briefly say that the fact that this company can charge £190 a month for a 3 bed property where the only gas supply is to the boiler and the two occupants are out at work all day every day except the weekend is beyond me!! We are lucky to have two incomes however those who are benefits or the elderly will have my every sympathy. I was a customer of Scottish Power but moved home. The cancellation was fine and their tariffs were much of a muchness. The reason for the poor rating is the marketing calls, they will not stop. It's either a recorded message telling me to ring a different number to stop the calls, thus costing me to tell them to stop, or an agent who seems to take little notice of me asking them to stop calling me. This should be illegal by default, I would like to see heavy fines for all companies who... (read more)

I am currently going through the same issue. I was on a pre-paid meter in my old address. I just moved and was silly enough to give them a final meter reading and my current address. I then got letters, calls and text messages saying I owe then £53 and they are taking legal action!!! They had a meter reading from me (correct numbers) 12 months before. I left the property with £5 credit in the meter too!!
How can I owe them money? I paid for the electric I used...if by chance they made some kind of mistake in my usage that is THEIR FAULT not mine.

You're very lucky if this happens. My last reading was taken in March, even though I was told the same. I've just received notification from them that on April 11th I was in credit of £88.31, they aimed that by 17th February 2006 that the cost of my consumption would be £368.83, this is for 10months and I already have a direct debit of £41.50, they were notifying me that they were increasing my direct debit to £61.50! Last year I was paying £70.00 and they ended up with £500.00 of my money which I had to chase them up several times for. I have not got a justified reason to have my current amount of £41.50 to be reinstated apparently, even though 10months at £41.50 makes a total of £415.00 plus the £88.31 I am already in credit less the estimated cost of consumption £368.83, still in my reckonning makes me in credit.

I had a similar situation with them. I left them due to rocketing bills and Scottish power charge me two futher payments at the wrong amounts, after the hand over completion date with my new supplier! which meant i had to pay two lots of gas and electricity for two months...not cheap! I've have just managed to get one payment refunded but i had to resorted to getting advice from ofgem, etc just to have the right knowledge to challenge them! Scottish Power also accessed my bank account of a number of occassions without my permission to take these incorrect payments which i didn't even owe! the whole process so far has taken over 6 weeks of constant calls from me to them, like you i had no acknowledgment of email etc and no calls back when dates and times were given. AVOID SCOTTISH POWER!! this is the advice on countless customer review sites!
