Have had my Oreck for nearly seven years with no problems - it stopped working a week ago, so I contacted Oreck because the product has a seven year guarantee, not really expecting a positive response becasue it is nearly out of guarantee but they could not have been more helpful, the cleaner was collected from my house and returned within four days - apart from black plastic casing virtually everything else has been replaced and it is working better than ever. Amazing service and I would recommend...

I have been VERY disaapointed with my Oreck XL. It was expensive. It has next to no "pick up" power. It smells of burning rubber (presumably the belt wearing out). Pre-Sales service slick - After Sales service poor. Am now planning to give it away on Freecycle in the hope that someone can fix and use it....

The Oreck XL Platinum (upright vacuum) runs away from the vacuumer, have to hold it back, tiring. It eats the ends of rugs regardless of high or low power setting. Not having a tool attached is a problem. The sidekick canister is not convenient in many ways: hooks for winding the cord are on the bottom, difficult to re-attach cover on bag compartment, difficult to attach over-the-shoulder strap to the hooks on machine, strap tangles with cord, and just the inconvenience of having to store and haul...

After a year I sent the Oreck XL back to be checked as it did not pick up well and was smelling. It came back a little better. For the next 2 years I put up with it, replacing belts, brushes - just about everything you could replace. Bought the super-duper bags - it still smelled after vacuuming. The bags were not even an eighth full after a month of vacuuming and the carpets were looking worse and worse. The Oreck went back again and came back again, still no better and still smelling when vacuuming....

had an xl for approx ten years only had to change the belt once... i highly recommend this vacuum cleaner, think its fantastic. only downside is it doesnt have any of those extentable bits, but is very, very light and therefore is no problem up and down the stairs. also, parts are cheap, service is graet and its such a simple design that even a dumbo like me can replace certain bits and bobs when they fail or wear out. dont be put off by the last comment, our vacuum cleaner is used excessively as...

The Oreck XL is a great vacuum. Works well and light weight. I would buy one again. The only down side is that it stinks like dirt. We store it in a closet and it really smells it up. We change the bag regularly but it doesn't help....

The oreck vaccum cleaner is expensive but I can't fault it, or the after sales service. I have a cat and a dog, have had the cleaner 7 years and haven't had to change a belt yet. The brushes are just starting to wear, and it gets heavy use, two or three times a week, up and downstairs, carpets and hard floors. Buying the bags from the internet is no real hardship either. You can get the cleaner overhauled by Oreck and they virtually rebuild it, even providing a new motor as a matter of course. ...

With regards to the Oreck XL, it's the only upright that the wife has found easy to use. For anyone with a bad back or weak wrists it will be a good choice. It does a thorough job and can even be used on stairs. Oreck uprights are impressive but they have to be bought in an expensive bundle with an awful cylinder model included. At least that's the situation in the UK....

I recommend Oreck to friends when they are looking for a new vacuum cleaner. Light. Great for backache sufferers. Gets into the corners. All surfaces cleaned. I have had 2 dogs in this time, both with house-dust mite allergies. Problem solved! My Oreck is 18 years old. I treated myself to a new one last year and have not opened it yet!...

I'm truly shocked by the negative comments for this Oreck XL cleaner. Sick and tired of Dyson's picking up dog hair for 6 months and then leaving a thatch in a navy blue carpet. Compared to other cleaners it's very lightweight and so takes the backache out of cleaning. Its efficiency means cleaning takes a fraction of the time. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase again....

I bought my Oreck XL vacuum cleaner 15yrs ago. I love it and would recommend them to anyone. My daughter bought one 7yrs age and loves it too. I have never had aproblem with the belts. They last for ages and so do the bags. I would never have another type of Hoover. ...

I was surprised to see that some users had had problems since I have had my Oreck XL for 10 years now and haven't had to change the belt yet! I use it 2/3 times a week. It is nice and light and so is easy to carry up and down stairs. Bags are easy to change. I would definitely recommend them....

The Oreck XL is a very expensive vacuum that doesn't work. It throws out dust and won't pick up even surface lint. I am very disappointed. I called the company and asked for a part and they assured they would mail, but never heard from them again. Can't find anyone to do warranty work. Bags are not available except through the internet. Would not recommend. Bought top of the line, but it is not worth plugging in....

The XL is overpriced, but compared to the other vacuums I would have gone through by now, this one is still going strong. The belt does need changing a lot (I vacuum every other day and have a golden retriever). One other down side is that the vacuum smells like "dog" when I'm done. And forget about buying those scented filters, what a waste of money!!! Overall, I'm pretty happy with it!!!...

From an industrial design point I like the Oreck XL but it does not compare with the Eureka's and Hoovers in the same price category. It has low suction compared to other makes and it takes multiple passes to pick up anything that is not just laying on the carpet surface. Another aggravating trait is its tendency to track left or right. I have had to pull the handle at a 20 or 30 degree angle to get it to track straight back. And what is with those little side whiskers? Worthless! As if they were...

We have 6 cats, and we love the Oreck XL vacuum cleaner!! It works great! The people that are leaving poor reviews I guess don't know how to use it! LOL! We use the Crystal instead of the powder cleaner. The powder cleaner is what killed our last vac, which was a Hoover. We have no problem with the Oreck picking up the cat hair. I would recommend this vacuum cleaner! The cost is high, but I was tired of buying a vac every two years....

We had the Oreck XL for a few months when it started becoming more difficult to pick up with it. We finally took it to the retailer for an inspection (after making sure it was not the belt or bag) and they told us Resolve Carpet Cleaner (or "that white stuff" as they called it) was ruining the motor. Uh, we used "that white stuff" on our previous vacuum for serveral years with no problem. You just sprinkle the granuals on the carpet, brush them in with the brush, and vaccum thorougly as the Resolve...

I was surprised to read the poor reviews of the Oreck cleaner. Other than the belt being difficult to change, I absolutely love it. I have 2 teenagers, 2 large HAIRY dogs (German Shepard & Border Collie), and a messy husband ... the Oreck has been wonderful and easy on my bad back. The separate canister is also very convenient when 2 of us are cleaning at the same time (which, fortunately, is often). I would recommend the Oreck to anyone who wants clean carpets without breaking their back!!...

Wow, I'm surprised by all the bad reviews of the Oreck XL. I've had mine for 5 years, after going through two Hoovers in four years (the disposable vacuum cleaner), and I've never had a problem. It works great, picks up dog/cat hair wonderfully (I have two golden retrievers and two cats!), and have never had belt problems, or any other problem. It's been a great buy for me, and it is very light, which is great for me because I have 3 levels in my home to vacuum, and lots of stairs, plus my 9 and...

I bought an Oreck XL vacuum cleaner. I have two dogs, so I vacuum almost every day. I have to stop every 10-15 minutes to clean all the dog hair off of the roller brush. The problem is even worse when the belt is worn. I have to change the belt every 1-1/2 to 2 months (not every 6 months as the manual states). I sent an email to Oreck about my problem. They suggested that I pick up the dog hair first before I vacuum? I thought that is why I bought the vacuum in the first place! Read the online reviews...

Oreck is scamming business owners. They send an advertisement to your business trying to get you to purchase a show model vacuum at half price. When you call to purchase it, they tell you all about the 3 year warranty on parts and the 10 year warranty on the housing. It's not until after you recieve the owner's manual that you find out that if you use the vacuum in your business it voids the warranty. I spoke with their customer no-service people today, and after 45 minutes of being told they could...

Avoid the Oreck XL vaccuum cleaner! Originally I was charged an amount for this item as listed on their web site. Four months later, I received a letter demanding more money because their web site had the wrong amount listed. I refused and they have handed it over to creditors. I paid what was listed on the site then they changed the price - this company is sleazy. Plus, the vacuums don't suck nearly as much as the company....

The ORECK vacuum "cleaner" is advertised all the time on American radio. The ad campaign is very slick. This spokesman is a nice older soundiing guy who claims to be the gentle stately gentleman who has designed and engineered the Oreck vacuum cleaner just for you and is only interested in selliing this reliable economical machine for your benifit. DON"T BELIVE IT! They sell for about $300.00 and are about $300.00 over priced. It is such a piece of absolute garbage. The only reason it's "light"...

Joel....Lovely review - I'm still chuckling over it. By the way, to THIS Euro 1/8th of an inch is just that.
I really can believe everything you've written as I sometimes listen (mainly for amusement purposes) to WWCR on the Short Waves and heard some of the advertising blurb for the Oreck. Any product that is any good just does not need that kind of advertising. I think any GOOD product sells itself. The whole dubious affair smacks of your old Carnival Snake Oil routines.
If Mark Twain were alive today, I know what HE would say about it all!!

Wow! Thanks for the review! I was just about to purchase this thing (oreck XL-usa)The latest "deal" is through J C Penny stores...you get the Oreck xl, the compact canister, and the cordless iron. All for around 400 dollars (U S). The old addage holds true..if it sounds too good, it most likely is not.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear the problems you have had. My mom is a maid at a hotel and she purchased the Oreck XL at home & loved it so much she started bringing it to work with her. Within months, the hotel purchased all new Oreck machines for all the maids. She swears by it & has not had any problems with it. You can imagine the use it has been put through.

My experience was the same as Joel's. We went through about five belts and bought a new roller brush which didn't help. If I clean the roller brush out after every room it does work. If you don't it's a smoky mess!

I appreciate all your comments, they have helped me avoid an expensive mistake. I want an upright with a soft bag since I hate the exhaust blast that disturbs the dirt that hasn't been caught yet. Your reviews have prompted me to keep looking! Thanks! Terri

It is quite obvious that, so called "Joel" and his cronies have no experience in using any type of vacuum cleaners. Do not take his advice what so ever. Just try one out like I did or get your money back. It is that simple. I have been going through two many vac's made in China..(Asia). If you are serious about buying a Vacuumn, check them all out. If you believe, so called "Joel", I have some swamp land for sale.
