Had it for 4 years now, and it died on me twice. The last time I was warned by the clicking noise it made. Like it was shutting down.
I opened the case of the drive to see if the head was stuck and turned the platters around. Then closed up and it was running well for a long time, both occasions.

When I boot it as a Master, it tries to boot up but it restarts every time. And on slave it stops my computer from loading anything from Windows XP pro and Ubuntu. I have used the hard drive on my 2 separate computers and neither work. In all I haven't been able to get it to run on anything. I wouldn't recommend someone get this unless they have had several years of experience with computers and even then good luck with it. Therefore I do not recommend Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120GB.

Had this for 1.5 years, ran OK then crashed spectacularly, reformatted, lost everything, then still wont work.... Going to buy a Seagate 500Gb instead I think!

I personally was not happy with this Hard Drive in any possible way, the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 has been "ok" for the last 5 years however recently it has been freezing constently, it's almost everytime I turn it on it crashes. Therefore in my opinion very unreliable and I think it has not been good and would not recommend this Maxtor Hard Drive to a friend.

A friend and myself, have between us had 4 out of 5 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120GB hard drives die very early on (between 8 months and 3 years).
What's worse, is that you usually get no warning what-so-ever!
I would NEVER buy another Maxtor hard drive again; but if you do, make sure that you backup anything you don't want to lose!!

I've recently had my 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 hard drive fail; although the failure mode was progressive, rather than catastrophic.
The drive began causing blue screens. When relegated to slave duties it works OK, but has been replaced, due to it starting to make some curious sounds.

Stay clear of the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120 GB and Maxtor drives in general or you will be sorry.

The hard drive is the single most important part of a computer. If any other part fails, you replace it, and you're back up and running, you loose the hard drive and you've lost everything you've ever done on that computer!
As a computer technician, I swore by Maxtor for 10 years, during that time I had only seen one Maxtor drive fail. Since their drives reached 80GB + the quality and reliability of Maxtor's drives has become the worst I have ever seen of any brand of hard drives. I have a stack of Maxtor hard drives that no longer work, all but 2 of which failed after the 1 year warranty was up, but usually within 3 years, no wonder they don't warranty it for that long anymore!

Bought several Maxtor drives in the past and they did not last as long as other drives that I used, sales personnel convinced me that problem had been overcome, it has not. I bought 2) 120 Gig Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA/133 W/8MB Cache from Tiger Direct and they subtituted 2MB Cache Drives, one has failed and the other is starting to act-up. They are both out of warranty by 14 days SORRY, SCREWED, By Maxtor with Junk, Screwed By Tiger Direct with subtituted items.

Ive got a nine year old maxtor which is still in everyday use! and have got a Maxtor diamond Plus 9 120 GB which has over 1600 hrs of use on it it has been formated multiple times and it works like new every time, never misses a beat! Are you sure they were real Maxtor? Pity about Tiger - use Dabs or Creative.
