I acquired a 604 this past spring, from a gentleman who had used it to earn a spot on the Canadian National Team in the 1980s. The seals in the gun has disintegrated over the past several years, so I hunted around for a seal kit and found it available from Guns N' Things, located in Blackie, Alberta. I wasn't too keen on disassembling the 605, as I had never worked on a SSP gun before. After some research on the web, I came across an excellent tutorial (complete with detailed photographs) on the British air gun forum. Determination buoyed, I took the gun apart slowly, labelling all pieces and placing them into plastic bags. The piston seal and felt were in very rough shape, as was the seal at the end of the compression tube. For good measure, I replaced the two seals on the air valve, as well as the breech seal. As you are not to let any petroleum-based lubes touch the new seals, I sparingly coated each in silicon oil and reassembled the gun, placing a small amount of moly paste on any metal-to-metal surfaces. So, how does it shoot? Well, frankly, the gun is a dream to fire. One singe stroke to cock, of about 18 pounds, insert pellet, close, aim, fire, repeat. The 604 responds well to quality pellets; thus far, JSB Diablo Match 7.3s are the hot ticket. The Morini grip is a tad too small for my large hands, but does have an adjustable palm shelf. I intend to alter the grip slightly to make it more comfortable in the near future. The trigger is quite positive, and with some tweaking produces a very crisp first stage, followed by a minimal second with a quick engage. I have not run the gun over a chronograph yet, but its performance is on par with that of an HW40, so in the neighborhood of 370-400 fps, just enough to cut a clean hole in a target. Best of all, the pistol is light in weight with no discernable recoil, so your grip and line of sight are less intruded upon by the gun itself. I'm no expert marksman, but with a few months of practice, I have seen real progress in terms of tightening up my target groups. The other night I set up about a dozen small pinecones at the end of the drive, at a distance of about 10 meters. Picking them off was almost too easy. At 5 meters, it is not overly difficult to drive nails into my backstop, provided they have a large enough head that I can actually see them. Alright, I'm gushing. The 604 is not a suitable competitor to the modern PCP pistols of Olympic use but it shoots far better than I do and is very enjoyable to use.

In these days of 'space pistol' look a likes of extreme expense, even a second-hand FAS604 is a good buy. The craftsmanship is excellent, as is the accuracy - IF you are good enough. There is a sight extension to increase the sight-base to the maximum allowed in UIT competitions - IF you can find one.
The Morini grip is almost perfect out of the box, and needs little or nothing doing to it to make it comfortable for most normally-shaped hands.
It is the nearest that today's shooter will get to ...

I love this FAS AP604 gun, it just feels so right and shoots so well - at 10m precision. It's a pneumatic (overlever) single-shot, so it's not a "fun gun" but if you can shoot precision this will make it easy for you to do just that bit better. It sits low in the hand, has virtually zero motion on discharge, a really short travel and crisp trigger (with adjustable stop). On a good day I can group inside the 10m ISU 9-ring, shooting precision (one-handed, no rest) - which is what it's designed fo ...
