written by 10067121 on 17/07/2011

this was the first car I bought by myself when i was in high school.I got it in 1975 back then didnt think of it as a colector car,if i only new. my dad was a mecanic,we took the motor out and put a chevy 427,i had the fastest car in my town.i I wish i still had this car, should have kept it stock,im prob making the colector guys sick,i remember we took the origanal motor out and the ram air air cleaner and all that stuff and gave to junk yard, the ram air air cleaner would not fit after we put the big block in,we could not close the hood,i remember getting a chrome air cleaner and throwing the orig ram air in dumpster, man were we stupid?I can remember racing oter kids in town, roadrunners supper bees, camaroe, chevelles, gran prix, buick Gs, i cant remember how many diff cars, but nun could beat me on the streat,I only paid 1,000 for the car and sold for 1,250,had many cars after that,corvets,z28 camaroe, but loved that firebird, wish i could find it today.

This is absoloutely the most piece of rubbish car I hace EVER owned. It ran so badly and the sound was horrific, I must suggest another car because this one is total rubbish.

For a small muscle car, I thought thePontiac Firebird Formula Ram Air III rode pretty good, it handled awsome, and was an all-around good car. My first new car was a '70 Formula 400. I absolutley loved it, though I'm lucky to have survived it. I was too young for that calibur of car.

Not for the beginner driver if you like stomping on the gas in 1st gear but once on the freeway its handeling is amazing in oregon I-5 i raced some BMW's and took 50 mph corners at 120 and didnt even squel a tire. And its fun stomping on others with a car built by Americans for Americans!

The Pontiac Firebird Formula 455 Ram Air I have is a fast piece of machinery. I drive calm and easy with it, because it took me lots of money to restore it from scratch. It was in a very bad condition when I bought it from a US cars Scrapyard in the Netherlands. I use the car as daily driver to my work and I go to US carshows in The Hague. “The Pontiac Firebird is without a doubt one of the...”

★★★★★

written by Bad400 on 09/11/2005

The Pontiac Firebird is without a doubt one of the most under rated Muscle cars of our time. If anyone from Hot Rod magazine, High Performance Pontiac, or any other car related magazine reads this I beg of you get a hold of one of these rare cars and re-test it, because it sure deserves the credit that is due. These cars are amazing. The Ram air motors came with an advertised 345hp and 430 lbs torque; however this was an estimate the manufacturer published due to rising insurance rates with young drivers. When hooked up to a dyno the motors made 370 horse power, and over 450 lbs torque. I am the owner of a 1970 Firebird Formula 400, Ram Air model. Th-400 transmission with 3.55 gears. The car rockets from a stand still to 60 mph in 5 and a half seconds, and when stock in 1984 when I picked up the car, it was able to run a 13.67 down the quarter mile at speeds over 100 mph. Compare those stock times, to the stock times taken by Hot Rod magazine, March 1970 that showed 0-60 of 6.0 seconds, and quarter mile of 14.2. This is why this car needs to be re-tested! The suspension set up on this car is top notch, it would eat Z-28's and Corvettes left and right. This really is one of the Ultimate muscle cars, however, sadly, was never recognised as such. I can remember when these cars came out, I guess you could call me an old fart, but I remember seeing these cars at the drag strips running mid 13's on average, and eating MOPAR's, Ford's, and other cars left and right like nothing! My car has 54,400 original miles on it. It is a weekend cruise car and show car. Numbers matching from the carb to dated hoses. This car was replaced from daily driver to restoration project / show car when I purchased a Corvette as my daily driver. Car is still a blast to drive, looks like nothing that is on the road today, gets comments left and right, and when it comes to racing, with the addition of drag radials the car can run as fast as a 12.87. I am currently in the process now of obtaining another Formula 400, which is a non-ram air model, 1970, that will receive a custom fit LS1 motor and 6 speed transmission, to be my new daily driver. In closing I want to say one more time, I feel that this is possibly the greatest muscle car created, I have drove Corvettes, Camaros, Chevelles, Chargers, Challengers, Mustangs, Dusters, literally tons of Muscle cars in my line of work, and I have to say out of all the cars, including driving a 426 Hemi Road Runner, the 1970 Ram Air Formula 400 is by far the fastest of the pick, and has rail like handling that cannot be beat, simply amazing. I could literally go on for hours and praise this car for days. Just an blast to drive, lights up the rear tires just like it did when it was brand new, and just as strong and powerful as every before. One race kill and I will call it a night. Back in the early 90's on the way to the Hot August night's car show and cruise, I had the pleasure of running into 3 other cars that where heading the same way I was. A Red 68 RS Camaro, 396. A Blue AC Cobra Kit car (when they first started making them), and a Fastback 1969 Mach 1 Mustang. The 4 of us went from cruising at 55, to running at 100 in a pack. The AC Cobra kit car took off creaming, the RS hit wide open throttle soon followed by the Mach 1. I was never able to catch the light 427 powered it car, but before the RS and Mach one could even get going fast enough I past them like they where standing still. LOADS of get up and go to it. So read this, and remember the true under dog of the Muscle cars is the Formula 400, 1970, Ram Air. Thank you - Adam

written by RamAirThree on 25/07/2005

Before I start my review of the Pontiac 1970 Firebird Formula Ram Air III I'd like to explain that I have 27 years experience with muscle cars. This is a car that should be considered the missing link in the Muscle/Pony car era. Never was a car so well at performing at both sides of the fence then the 1970 Formula 400 True Ram Airs.
I have owned and restored many Muscle and Pony cars in my 37 years of life and I am yet to find a car that can give so much in one package. If you are into adrenaline rushes and cruising at the same time, then this is the car you have got to experience. Many people say it is power off the line or it is top end handling, YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH ...... I say they never tried driving a 70 Formula 400 RA III to prove that myth false.

I owned a 1970 Formula 400 and from a roll start (my favorite), I could not be beaten even by a Kawi 750.

I had no business learning to drive a classic goldenrod yellow Pontiac 1970 Firebird Formula Ram Air III Car. I had the pleasure of taking a Pennsylvania State Trooper for a ride on the test track at Trevose. He loved the car, and I passed my driver's test. The trooper had me run the slalom at 25 mph...instead of the normal 15 mph. My mother watched in horror as I "heated up" the tires...G-70-14 Goodyear Polyglas with white letters. The State Trooper hit his head on the passenger's window--under lateral G's--and knocked his trooper hat right off his head. This is the only car I have ever received a ticket for "fast acceleration" in. This is a car that was capable of executing "Bat Turns." This is a 180 degree turn accomplished by tromping the gas in first gear and cranking the steering wheel over...

The car handles great, has powerful acceleration and is fun to ram through the gears with. Its an all around totally rare butt kicking ponch from the early seventies and comes in the era color of keylime green. Who could ask for more.

An awesome killer attitude Firebird that gives the gift of not having to fear any other vehicle on the road. When the dual exhaust sing you cannot help but notice the look from other enthusiasts in awe stricken disbelieve that the car is not your common F-body. I love the looks, the performance, the feel....... enough to be restoring one myself. One thing about this car is the fact of owning a piece of history in a "Pony Car" that kicks butt like a true Muscle car but yet still adds even more flavor, because the car is no slouch on the highway either. This in my opinion, is one of the all time Pontiac greats that did not get all the prestige it deserved. If any Firebird deserved the right to the name Banshee...... it was without a doubt the 1970 Ram Air III Formula 400.
