I've used independent email services for years. I have used fastmail.fm for the past 3 years -- This is the best email service that I have used. I can't give them enough praise. I rarely get spam and the online interface is great. I use it on an android phone, outlook, and mac mail. It works flawlessly... If you are looking for an email service get this one.. (read more)

I tried out a Fastmail free account years ago but it was so ugly and clunky I never used it as my main account, only as a backup account that I used as a redirect archive account and for some website memberships. Every so often they would warn me that it might be closed if I hadn't used it recently enough, so I would revisit it. Now without any warning they have closed it down because they have stopped free accounts. I have lost all my archives and the passwords to some websites where... (read more)

I've used Fastmail for over 5 years now and it is still the best email service out there. Yeah, it's not free, but it isn't expensive either. You get a great level of control over your mail -- technical control that the likes of Yahoo, GMail, AOL, and Hotmail/LiveMail simply do not give you. Their new interface is also much friendlier and works more like a modern webmail interface -- the old interface was ugly, but functional and it desperately needed this makeover. Anyway: Great product, no... (read more)

I'm not sure if Opera has too much money to spend or coders just have too much time on their hands, but either way Fastmail is quickly improving itself out of it's long held 1st Place. I've been with them for over a decade and have had nothing but good to say about them, up until they decided to discontinue the Classic User Interface some time ago. Now, today was about the last straw. The rolled out a 10 month long Beta exercise as the Main New/Improved Interface. Gone is much we were... (read more)

Completely agree! I have used them for many years, and am now looking for an alternative that allows me to have several different email addresses in one email program. Suggestions?

Over the years I have had (and still have) a fair few emaiol accounts with different providers for different purposes. The one constant for me continues to be that Fastmail is my rocksolid provider for my main personal account. Not only does it give me a reliable and flexible email service, but I have one of the paid plans and for not much dollar outlay I also am able to host my own domain and emails off it too. At different times I've had to contact support with a query, and I've been... (read more)

I just signed up, and so far so good. The site below helped me as well I like this part: With the free providers, You are a commodity. Your information is bought and sold and your emails are scanned to allow advertising. Commodity: An article of trade or commerce In return for your information and advertising support you are offered an email service, which we all would agree looks and works good. But think about this, who is the customer? Is it you or is it the advertiser?... (read more)

I signed up for a paid plan because I was having problems with Gmail and my regular provider. GMail got better and I no longer used fastmail. One day I received an email that I had used up all the data on my plan. All of my regular emails had been forwarded to fastmail so all of a sudden everybody who sent me an email on my regular service received a message that their email did not go through because I had not paid for more data. This was bad enough but it has been a nightmare to cancel... (read more)

If you need reliability you just can't trust a free service.
How fast do you think Gmail would solve a problem with your account?
Once you go fastmail, you will never go back.

I couldn't agree more with all of the above said. FM is a fantastic service and reply asap with even small issues or questions.
If you run a business on any level, you probably keep some sensitive information about your clients somewhere stored. Do you really trust this to a free service paid for by advertising? ISP based mail is a pain because people change ISPs all the time.
For a mere $40.00 a year, you can have your own large storage and an email system that is very secure, and just plain WORKS. I'd recommend it to anyone who does more than just messaging nonsense and bad forwarded mail.

The only thing worse that placing your trust in a FREE service, is paying for Fastmail only to witness them discontinue their most used and appreciated Classic Interface of all. No idea who's at the wheel since Fastmail was purchased by Opera, but things have gone down-hill considerably.
This comment from a decade long user of Fastmail.

I paid for the year and sent emails whilst on holiday. Then got banned after just 2x weeks for sending duplicate emails. All ligitimate I hassen to add. they Locked my account closed and said ' sorry we do not have the ability to un-lock' .......Poppy cock!! If they dont have the ability within their own system to unlock your account what sort of technicians do they employ? Refussed to allow my incomming emails to me.
All my incomming mails were now 'bounced' and left me with a...

AVOID. They are way inferior to gmail.com, cost more for less space ($40 per year for 800 MB as opposed to $0 for 8000 MB from gmail). Which is understandable. But they
also disble POP and forwarding so its a major mail-losing pain in the ass to switch away from them.
Really, disabling forwarding for free accounts is a SCUMBAG maneuver fastmail, really pathetic.

I use FastMail's Enhanced service, for an annual fee of £25 - about 50 pence a week - and the service is outstanding. No advertisements, amazing anti-spam protection, great interface, lots of very useful features, and a personal help service. In cyberspace you get what you pay for, and with most free email accounts you get what you don't pay for: intrusive ads, spam, and very little help. I recommend FastMail unconditionally. (read more)

Fast Mail is a back to basics interface doesn't have sluggishness issues. (eg. Fastmail)
The new interface that is arriving is quite modern but keeps things quite simple.
I've found it to be reliable over the last 8 years.
In general this is a good and clean interface. I have considered moving to gmail because of the many megabytes, but then I am so used to the way everything works here.
When browsing from one email to another, they have a good system to navigating to the next or previous...

All things considered, fastmail.fm is the best among the choices I've been able to try and that's quite a few, including "free" and "for a fee" services. With regards to the enhanced service, The Web client is responsive and easy to use. In many cases, I've been able to recover an e-mail in preparation after I thought I had lost it. I'm now committed to bring both of those e-mail categories to fastmail.fm when my runbox.com subscription runs out because, as limited as searching is in... (read more)

I paid for full service so I could send outgoing emails via outlook, but then couldn't get Outlook to talk to their server to send outgoing messages - in effect the Fastmail server was not recognizing me as a full subscriber and treating me like I hadn't paid. So I tried to get customer support - and guess what - every email I sent bounced (with a message pointing me to the FAQs saying if I wanted such support I had to upgrade to full). I ran an account verification - they said I had full. ... (read more)

Update: I have since got some very helpful technical assistance from Fastmail (an email response came about 18 hours after I send the email to the "request refund" address), and have everything working properly now, feeding into and out of Outlook 2007. Hopefully in a few weeks time if everything is still working smoothly I can come back and give them a much higher rating.

I signed up to fastmail a while back when I read a review.
Recently moved my main address to fastmail and upgrade as did not want any advertising which BT yahoo plastered all over their site. My explorer pro being unable to block when BT started sending flash.
Very happy with fastmail. Learning new things as I go along. The poll box excellent. Fast, clean, tidy and good email addresses available.
Top marks so far!

I've had this account for nearly 2 years and in that time there has been periodic downtime. Worryingly, I have not been able to get into my account for 3 days due to a disk failure on the server my account is on and they don't know when it will be up and running again. This has prompted me to write a review because I have come to the conclusion that the claims made by the company (fast mail) are not justified. (read more)

I first signed up with Fastmail.fm (www.fastmail.fm) about 1 and a half years ago under the Guest account and I liked it. Before signing up to Flashmail I had a period of moving ISPs a lot, and needed a way of keeping one email address that wouldn't change. I had Hotmail and Yahoo accounts but these were virtually unusable because of spam and not very pleasant to use on a daily basis because of messy site design. I gave a few other providers a try, and Fastmail were the unchallenged best.
The free account comes with a few caveats, such as one-line text ads in outgoing mail and no SMTP access. Your mailbox is...
