Good Points: reliability, cost to run.

Bad Points: front suspension, needs a little bit more power. a little bit heavy.

General comments: The Honda XR400R has great build quality. can ride to work then the trails.

I was into motocross for many years and aways took the p-xx out of four strokes saying "I'll never get one of those!!!"....I think back to those days and have a proper good laugh at myself for being led by all the other 2t sheep. If I knew what I know now I could have saved myself £ £ £ £ £ £ in repairs, pistons, main ends etc etc.....If you want one of the most reliable enduro bikes out there, grab a good xr, you will have all the fun at a fraction of the co ...

Can't think of another bike I'd want to replace it with. Brilliant build quality and finish. Unbreakable engine/transmission. Parts availability very good, both OEM and aftermarket add-ons.

"Buy one before they all the good ones go"! Having read about this legend machine I recently bought an example from 97 and I love it. It had been de-restriced by the last owner with a straight through pipe and larger jet but it had a slight hesitation at 80kph and was quite hard to start from cold. After reading about the XR's starting issues I took mine down to the local Honda garage and after he re-jetted it back to the std size it fires easily when cold and hot. The bike is comfortable, has l ...

Bulletproof Build, looks serious, plenty of grunt to ride and a legend of a bike.
Want a bike to last forever which wont need constant servicing and attention, XR400 is it!

Great bike for good money. The Honda XR400 is an awesome bike just got one of my own there are now five of use riding the same bike on roughly the same set-up and they are solid bikes.

The Honda XR400R is one good solid bike, only bad point is probably the looks it has no fins in the front making the xr400 appear older than it is

I bought my Honda XR400R new in 98 and have rode it on snow, sand, rocks, through rivers, road, deserts and motorcross tracks and have jumped it over tabletops and ski jumps just like my first CR125.....and it's never ever let me down!

I change the oil and filter every 1000km and tyres and chains as and when, and grease it up once a year, but thats it!

If you drop it nothing breaks.....just pick it up and carry on! I've put an aluminium bash plate under the engine for piece of mind and ...

There are bikes that are faster and lighter but they won't be a Honda and they won't last and in time they will look old. And I am 44 now. If Honda made a female that was a Honda I would marry her! That how good they are.

Wow! I love my 2004 Honda XR400R! The engine has loads of power, I can wheely off the throttle in first and second gear! I've had a white brothers exhaust fitted and it sounds even better, it's nice and quiet when your just pottering around, then when you wind her back, it roars like nothing I've ever heard before!

I bought this bike because I wanted a low maintenance bike, I thought it wouldn't be as quick as my mate's CCM/DRZ, but it actually has more power and loads more bottom end grunt! ...

I have set this bike up to fit me with taller bars, taller seat, larger pegs, heavier fork springs, and adding a fork brace made a huge difference. By opening up the intake on the airbox, changing the spark arrestor to the free flowing HRC unit from the early models, and changing out the main, and pilot jet as well as the needle made for crisper throttle response and increased boost overall. Disc protection and a skid plate are a good investment if you ride in rocks. For a non-race bike, I have ...

I ride mostly in the desert outside of Las Vegas, NV. I have installed a 440 Big Bore kit (11 to1) with a stage 3 Hot Cam-36MM Mukuni Pumper carb-opened air box-XR only full exhaust with a wrapped/insulated header pipe-big gun rev box. Very strong compression with the big bore kit and cam.

Have ridden both the Cullowee, North Carolina and Piedmont, Tennessee mountain trails. My Honda XR400R bike is comfortable and powerful. Just put on a Pro Core IV pipe, and a Scotts steering damper. What a difference!

Put the steering dampener on and you won't believe the difference on rough trails with roots and pot holes.

I have had my Honda XR400R since 2000. Have rode mostly on mountain trails. Recently while riding in Moab I switched and rode my friends CRF450 and he rode my XR400. He couldn't get over how plush the bike was, I thought his suspension was harsh, but would love to have his power, however I felt the XR400 put the power to the ground more efficently. Bet my rear tyre will last twice as long as his. Wish the power was a little better to help loft the front end. In sand the bike tends to wande ...

Follow up on Honda XR400R offroad bike ownership: Sold the xr after 2 1/2 years, i rode this bike most weekends trail riding it never let me down, i've been in torrential rain, snow & hot weather, its been riden through rivers at least 2foot deep. Anything gone wrong, yes the speedo drive stopped working (the gears are made out of nylon)big deal! The only mod it needs is an electric start.

Bought 2002 as replacement for 96 XR250R. The XR400 is an excellent trail/enduro bike, power to weight ratio is about right, build quality is excellent. In over a years ownership there have been no problems. I have rode this m/c nearly every weekend (tarmac?what tarmac?)
