We liked this shower,s pressure so much that when the "cannot turn it off" problem occoured we bought another. this one developed the same fault after a couple of years, so, since we can access the pipes via a cupboard in the adjacent room, we fitted a turn off stop valve to the pipe supplying the hot water, and for about a year have been nipping into that spare room to turn the shower on/off. cranky but efficient. having read previous reviews my husband is now tasked with dismantling -... I too have had issues with the shower unit not shutting down for several seconds until on Xmas Day (!) it wouldn't shut down at all! I have just stripped it down and after removing 8 screws from the bottom of the unit I found the piston on the hot water side was stuck. I took that apart (access via a screw above it - the hot water valve slips out to get access), silicon greased it all and it is now working! I feel like a conquering hero!!! (read more)

Our shower unit is now around 4-5 years old & same problem.............
it wont turn off!
Ours was purchased from Wickes who obviously sold it under their own brand name but it did say it was Croydex. Both Wickes & Croydex do not want to know! It is so very obviously a manufacturing fault, no wonder Wickes no longer sell these shower units.
Consequently we are searching these reviews for help & assume everyone else is doing the same.

Initially the Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer shower worked fine and replaced the original unit without to much disruption to the cubical. However shortly after a water softner had been fitted to our mains supply the h2o hydro powered shower developed problems mainly with the hot water supply not turning off. The system has been isolated and we are expecting a plumber to see if he can fix it early next week. After reading the revues I wont be holding my breath. (read more)

I had the original Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer (a thinish square unit ) some 5 yrs ago and after 2yrs it would not turn off properly.
I was sent free of charge a completly new unit but of a different style (a round unit with large round wheel dial on/off assembly on the front ) but working on the same hot/cold mixing method ie `ventury principal`.
This has now developed the same fault of not turning off after having a hot shower. However, I have overcome this problem (not by repair and...

The Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer is no longer made and no spares available. Now as rare as hen's teeth and equivalently expensive. Frustrating. These units should be a mainstay of production of British industry and lack of spare parts is a short term business decision of which the UK is currently reaping rewards I think. (read more)

My experience is similar. Folks, to repair the Aquadart leaking, does the white plastic bar that moves along to open the shower pull right out and is there a O Ring on the end of it that needs replacing to stop the leak.
Also where does one add the sicilon grease to make to operate better

Both my Croydex H2O and older Hydroflow are leaking so badly that the lower pressure will not pull the hot water sufficiently. Can anyone suggest a sealant that would work on this type of plastic. It happened when I had to take them apart to solve the 'not turning-off' problem, then they leaked from all the joints, especially the top plate. The dripping/not turning off is easy to fix, but so far I'm stuck with the leaking issue.
Would be great if someone could make a more robust version,...

I'm in the plumbing business. The very low cost and hence minimal retail profit margin prevented promotion of this Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer through normal plumbing outlets.
I am very sorry that croydex discontinued production several years ago,and that no other similar product ,at a sensible price is currently available in the uk.(April 2008)

Loved this shower but unfortunately after nearly 3 years the hot water wouldn't switch off. Had a plumber look at it last night and showed him david 38 comments but could see nothing wrong with it.
Got to go looking for a new shower now but haven't a clue what to look for to fit properly and save me retiling??? Any ideas?? Also if I buy a shower valve is that the mechanism to be fitted onto pipes and shower head or do I have to buy other parts after that??? Please help???

Had the Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer shower less than 4 years and it would not turn off, seems to be a particular fault but having read David's comments of July 2007 we removed the dial, stripped it down, cleaned it out and applied silicon grease, it now works a treat. There was a lot of debris due to the water in the road being turned off a few times I think but silicon grease seems to be the answer. Many thanks to David 07 (read more)

I found this review helpful because...I have the same problem, only I cant find the spring loaded piston you refer to- is it in part 6- the valve assembly? Or is it part 5- the on /off lever?

The spring loaded piston is located in the top of the valve assembly. To release the piston you have to undo the screw via the bottom of the valve assembly.Good Luck.

Hi

Does anybody know where I can get a copy of the manual (preferably the service variety!) for the Aquadart Hydroflo VS2 or Croydex H20 showers? Or better still has an electronic copy of the manual! I moved into a house with the shower already fitted and its been a wee gem for 5 years - but now a "won't switch off" issue has arisen. So I have no idea how to start taking this apart...from looking at it, you have to unplumb it and take it off the wall to get to anything!

Any assistance appreciated.

It replaced an Aquadart hydroflo shower (no longer made) and is better in most ways. Dripping and unreliable turn off indicate a short life (installed end 2004). Replacement may be difficult without replumbing/retiling. Bother. (read more)

Croydex responded to my enquiry with advice to descale the shower unit -- take it off the wall, (quick release pipe fittings fulfilling their purpose) fill it with descaler, rinse it and re fix it. A half hour job which stopped the drips and so far it turns off with only a little hesitation. So all it needs is a house supply water softener... but thanks to Croydex for good advice.

The Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer Shower has plenty of pressure and is easy to fit but it started leaking after 18 months and I can't find a replacement. I can't fit another shower onto the pipe fittings, as they are precise for this model, without re-plumbing! I'd like to simply replace it but looks like it is discontinued. (read more)

Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer:
If the house cold water presure is only average, you will still get get a very good powerful shower. Easy to use and low running cost. Would have given a higher rating if you could purchase a replacement 'o' ring and diaphram kit, would even pay £15 for such a kit.

Totally agree with this. The dripping is an ongoing problem and have replaced the shower unit once already. The manufacturer really needs to improve the diaphragm or make it an easy and cheap replace option. Otherwise its a marvellous device

I agree with review and previous comment. I like the shower but have already had to replace one as the hot water continues to flow after turning off the shower. After about a year of replacing it, the problem has reoccurred with the new one. I am now considering installing another type of shower. Pity, as it is a great shower when it works.

I agree that this shower, when first installed, was great. But please be warned, that after about 18 months the hot water does not turn off. I have a scalded child to prove it. I now have to replace this shower as i cannot get a new part for it. If your shower is beginning to drip, please supervise children.

I bought the H2o shower at Argos Jan 05 as I was saving to re model my bathroom the following year. The bathroom fitting went ahead last week and the shower proved to be a nightmare to try to stop the hot water drip. In the end my plumer gave up and offered to give me the cost to replace it! He said the internal fittings were flimsy to say the least and that the help desk could not provide the internal rings. I cannot return the unit as I have stored it for so long and now have to go search for a replacement that won't involve ripping out my new tiles! Looks great but just can't use it. One bonus is that its now discontinued-probably due to the adverse comments on the internal design.

I have the same problem with the "leak". Have you managed to find a replacement that doesn't involve you ripping out the tiling and re-plumbing? I've had to resort to turning the hot water feed off to the shower every time I use it, as I haven't yet found a replacement that fits directly onto the pipework.
Written on: 10/10/2006
I got around the continuous hot water flow problem with the Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer shower by buying a pair of white plastic isolation valves (90 degree turn, to turn off each water supply) from Wickes. They will fit on the pipework under the shower if you have the water feed coming from below the shower, rather than out through the wall into the shower. It's not an elegant solution, but it is practical, and the revised setup has been working well for over a year.

Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer - I installed this shower about 10 months ago. On the first attempt used cold water from tank in loft. The pressure was not sufficient, so we tried again, using cold mains supply to feed cold water inlet. The results were good and the shower performed as well as a power shower without the need for power (very good). After that someone in the house turned the knob the wrong way to turn it on (arrows point in both directions). The knob broke, but aftersales... (read more)

Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer - I spent a week trying to make the unit work from a storage tank cold water supply (2 metre head with tank full) this included cleaning out the tank, pipes, and adjusting the stopcock so that the tank was as full as possible. Despite this, pressure at the spray head was pathetic, and the shower would only run cold.
I then ran a mains cold water supply to the mixer unit and wow! Pressure is now much better than a pumped power shower elsewhere in the house, and...

Croydex state that the unit can be used with a cold tank feed, but stipulate clearly a minimum static pressure of 1.5Bar. Equivalent to a 15m head.
Written on: 08/04/2005
Ref comment from Ken Evans.

My point was that prior to purchasing the Croydex unit the only information that is available from most suppliers is that it is suitable for mains or tank fed systems.

Only once you open the box do the instructions state that a minimum of 1.5 bar water pressure is required.

Since I live in a bungalow the only other solution to a mains feed was to lower my shower head mounting point to 1.5 metres below floor level and excavate a pit to install my shower tray.

Prior to fitting the H20 for the first time I already had reasonable shower pressure and I was not expecting the H20 to degrade the performance.

As previously stated all's well that ends well, and I have recently installed a second unit in another bathroom also with mains feed and correspondingly good performance.

Compared to the price of a typical shower mixer the H20 seems very reasonably priced, but there is a distinct lack of useful installation information available prior to purchase, & I find that typical sales outlets (previously B&Q), Argos etc. are not very knowledgable.

Perhaps Croydex could provide an information leaflet to stockists, or consider using stockists who are able to give more helpful advice on the unit?
Written on: 01/11/2005
You say 2 metre head with tank full!!! I think you should know that you measure the head of water from the base of the cold water storage tank not the top of the water level..
Written on: 30/11/2005
Keith

sorry to nit pick, but whilst the bottom of the tank may be a "safe" recommendation for measuring pressure it is not technically correct. Head is measured as the height of the water column, which includes the water in the tank. Clearly a full tank of say 20m in height would produce considerable pressure even if it was sitting at ground level.

This may now all be academic wrt the H2O shower. My local plumbers merchant recently told me that Croydex have ceased its production.

Croydex H2O Hydro-Powered Mixer - The unit specifies very precise plumbing requirements, i.e., you must have 60mm centres; you must have the pipes absolutely parallel; you must have the pipes perpendicular to the wall. You have 1mm tolerance on the horizontals sticking out of the wall.
All done. The unit is fitted beautifully; the unit works. Only problem is, the hot water valve inside the unit leaks, The exchange unit (from B&Q, very helpful, exchange no quibble) does the same. The "after...

When I fitted my unit (never fitted one before), I found the instructions good & people at end of helpline OK, although to be honest I didn't realy need to call them (just me double checking an issue). I agree with the review. I have the problem that mine is leaking at the joints between the sections. Can you suggest a sealant, maybe a gasket compound that would work on this type of plastic construction (poypropylene?) ? It woudl be great if someone else could manufacture a more robust version.
