Over the years I have owned 5 peugeot 205 GTI's starting off with the 1.6 which was an eye opener to its performance and potential.
The build quality isn't bad considering its little more than a baked bean can, and the repairs are simple to fix / replace.
But the performance is simply fantastic on the standard 1.6/1.9 variants it has a power delivery similar to a 2 stroke motorcycle engine.
I now own a bit of a street sleeper, which I have tastefully modified (I can hear all you pureists... (read more)

It has been a pleasure to own and drive a 205 GTI 1.9 1994 for nearly two years now. The car was bought in Feb 2009 and have had three previous owners and a nearly complete service history.
Apart from regular maintenance I've only had one major problem - a blown head gasket. This was fixed and at the same time I had a race cam fitted, the head ported / polished and a K&N air filter fitted. The engine is transformed - it revs much quicker, spins much more freely and pulls way stronger above... (read more)

I've been driving for seven years now, and for 6 of them years ive had a 205 gti's.
My first was a 1.6 gti which i loved for 3 years was lovely to drive and had sensible power for a novice driver.
Then i brought a 1.9 gti, still to this day that was the best car i've driven. It had the handling, power and Reliability, never realy had problems with it! Loved it!
Now i have a rebuilt turbo technics 205, not the best for Practicality or reliability but would not change it! I have driven a mk2... (read more)

It has the up rated ECU on it so problems with the idling isn ' t a problem. I love the car and its power is amazing for the age of the car. This is one of those cars that everybody has to own. I'd wanted one for years, and the wait was worth it. I doubt anyone will ever understand the 205 GTI, unless they have driven one. It was, in my mind, a final flurry of craziness in a politically correct world. You're aware of how thin the panels are, and the engine sounds like a bag of spanners on idle. The steering is ridiculously heavy. And then you pull away, and when you escape the city, suddenly everything makes sense. I've never... (read more)

Many years ago, when they were still being made (and therefore desirable) I drove to Paris in one of these. It was very fast, and looked great. Twenty years ago, along with the Ford Sierra, this car opened up a fresh new wave of car design. Now they are being driven by the kind of people who would have once looked at it with envious eyes, and I doubt there's one left in the entire country that hasn't been thrashed almost to death. What a great car. I love my 205 1.9 GTi, it sticks to the road like glue and when you hit the pedal on the right she goes like stink. The suspension is hard, which means there's very little body roll, but also means a bumpy ride, though the seats themselves are comfortable, with good side supports which hold well through the corners. The car's very torquey, which is nice when going up steep hills or turning into junctions, as you can leave it in 3rd and rarely have to change down. The... (read more)

Sure the Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi isn't the fastest or most powerful car in Australia, but for a to b progress its quicker than most. Would suggest that handling is only tricky at the extreme end and then I feel its due to the short wheelbase ie spins end to end very quickly . Remedy to this is make sure you're always at the 3800-4700rpm range at the apex of the corner (picking the right gear helps) and allow the throttle/torque to straighten the backend up while you aim for where you want to go.... Have had my peugeot 205 gti (1.9) for around a month now and have enjoyed driving in it. It's a real drivers delight - as the chassis and stiff suspension provide for a really responsive ride. However, when hungover, one can feel a bit queezy! However, the clutch had started to slip in the first week of ownership (should have tested the clutch more rigourously when test-driving it) and predicted that it would be a fairly costly process, more so than the 1.6.
