I brought my GTI SE20 as a cheap car to do the 260 mile round trip to work each week,so I wasn't expecting much. (especially as I had dismissed Almeras in the past, as old peoples shopping cars) But after the first drve in it, I was pretty taken aback. It's no Skyline, but the thing that stood out was the handling and the engine once you get it past 3.5K revs. If you keep it in the sweet spot, you can blast along B roads with total confidence. Chain driven SR20DE engine is bomb proof and is very tuneable. Another huge plus point is fuel consumption. My Volvo T5 uses over twice the amount of fuel to do the same trip to work. Am I glad I brought it(for pocket money) Hell yes. These are becoming rare cars now, with about 170 left on the road,so get one while you can.

I've always found Nissan a reliable car, my sister had a micra, I looked at a lot of offers before I bought and so glad I did. The Almeria's really good, very reliable, decent enough for petrol, comfortable drive. Would recommend to others.

Just swapped my fiesta 1.8 diesel for one of these cars,F*cK me what a car!! it handles superb, cant drive it at 30mph sorry officer! easy to do 90mph on motorway without realising and is very comfy and responsive in every gear. bit thirsty if you peddle it around town but hey,who cares when you are having this much fun!! mate with series 2 RS turbo took the Pi*s until I wiped his bottom from the lights in my \"ugly japanese piece of sh*te\" If you are thinking of buying one,go for it!! they are so under rated - so cheap to buy and are virtually bomb proof! chain driven not like most 16V hatches (another reason not to buy a 20 year old \"fast RS turboohoo\" You live once, get on ebay spend £500-700 on the newest, lowest mileage car you can afford, pay the silly insurance premium(group 14) and have a blo*dy good laugh at all the other guys who have shelled out thousands on their \"hot\" hatches!!!!!! see the spoof links on YOUtube from 1997 from The Sweeney and The Professionals, forgot how funny they were in their day!!!

I've owned my Almera GTi for the last two and half years and I must say, it's been cracking. Completely unmodified and still able to get up to 145mph on a couple occasions. Handling is great but if you're not up for a bumpy ride this isn't the car for you. In and around town, getting up to 30/40/50...no problem. Still fits 4 adults with ease. Problems...none apart from the red paint fading a bit on the roof, but what else would you expect from a 12 year old car!

I ve had the car for only 2 weeks and love it apart from when a tractor crashed into it and wrecked the bonnet, headlight, grille, and the radiator as well shame really coz it was lovely to drive. Now i'm hoping to get it fixed and get back on the road as its a joy to drive. If anyones knows of any parts for sale please could you get back to me on my email which is [email protected] i would be very grateful. Thanks everyone.

I bought my Nissan Almera gti back in 2000 when she was only a year old for just over £9000 and only 5000 miles on the clock. Nine years later it has never broke down , never failed an MOT , servicing regularly and she still runs like a dream. The only trouble a have had is that the starter motor has been replaced twice .

nissan almera gti is good fun to drive and is very under rated in my opinion. had mine for about a year now the only bad point for me is that the power sterring pump has gone twice. but on reading everybody else's reviews on the net, it seems to be a problem only for me. otherwise the car is brilliant and great fun to drive. people say they are heavy on juice but i can get 35 - 40 mpg altho that may be just me driving like an old man of 90.

I have owened my nissan almera GTI bodykit version for about two years,it is a P reg with about 90k on the clock.i have had quite abit of repairs etc done to it,eg,front shocks, rear brake disks and pads, electric window motor and afew other things i cant remember, all original parts but i have noticed that there is so much on the car that is factory fitted eg the exhaust, clutch etc which is all even more reasuring to me that the parts i got replaced are long term wear and tear and that the car is actually very strong and relaible.i use my car once or twice a week and it always starts up first time every time.i know now you are probably thinking he only uses it once or twice a week but rest assured that the car gets driven like a GTI in other words i definatly open her up on the road to clear away the cobwebs, lol.it is a easy car to do a service on at home yourself and the light bulbs are easy to change unlike some cars.the car looks small from outside but can fit in five adults with ease,it has a spacious boot, the rear seats fold down if you wanted more room to tansport goods.i started the general comments part by telling about what car iv got and what parts iv had replaced but dont let that put you off, this is a amasing car with great value for money.iv owened many cars previously and the last two being a 2.0 turbo rover T bar and a peugeot 306xsi,both of them where nice cars but after owning a nissan almera gti i wouldnt go far from my almera GTI and would definatly stick to a japanese car,far more enjoyable and trustable,i wouldnt hesitate to take my car anywere no matter how far or how close.if you can find it in your heart to look past the Nissan badge then this is a must buy car.

I had one in 2000, beat many VW Golf GTi's in it, mates said it was crap till they drove it, a very underrated car, suttle mods and it looked better, handled great and went even better, comfy ride and seats, I bought it with 50k on the clock and took it well over 100k not a single bit of bother with the engine, very reliable apart from the doors locking by itself, it never failed an MOT and was serviced regulary. I'm getting another one very shortly and looking forward to getting another.

Good performance, good reliability, had mine for 7 years. Never had 1 problem. Awesome! I changed to uprated shocks and springs (lowered 50mm). Now it handles like a touring car. Planning a track day soon! recommended may be best gti?

I fitted a t28 Turbo 2 years ago and it flies. Just shows how reliable it is as even with the turbo punching close to 240 brake it never lets me down. Its up 4 grabs at around 2K.

Had my Nissan Almera GTi for just over a year and the only problem ive had with the car is the air blower resistor fuse went but was easily replaced, other than that it is totally reliable and fun to drive. You can pick a good one up for around 1500 which I think is brilliant value for money and I dont think you would find anything as quick and fun to drive for that.

I have only had my Nissan Almera for 5 weeks and I'm hooked its a real joy to drive great torque through 1st to 3rd bit sluggish through 4th and 5th but there is nothing else bad to say about the car it attracts a lot of attention I like the fact that its quite rare and it better than going down the usual route of Saxo VTS's or 106 GTIs great reliability great engine all round would well recommend buying one.

I've had the Nissan Almera GTi for a year now and am very happy with it. It's a 1999 (T plate) Gti model that I got with FSH and 52K on the clock for £1,850! It's got a great level of equipment - a/c, elec tilt/slide s/roof, c/locking, abs, airbag, electric windows + mirrors, comp, etc - and drives brilliantly. The handling is superb - along the twisties it's happy, and offers predictable, stable handling allowing for rapid driving without the stress. It's more of a 'quite-quick' car rather than a blisteringly one but I think this works in it's favour as there are loads of well looked after ones about. It's light and revs well and performs best at 4500-6500rpm. It's great for overtaking on B roads and good on the motorway too consuming the miles with ease.
The only criticism I have of it is the fact that the rear anti-roll bar runs along the top of the rear seats so when you fold them down the roll bar means you struggling to put your bike or any other largish object in the back. That really is the only negative I can think of though. If you want a cheap to buy and run everyday reliable Gti then you'll be struggling to find anything better. And if it's more performance you want there are loads of affordable mods to get it going a bit quicker...
