    Sterling HR81

I had one when they first came out in the early 80s and could not get on with it. Firstly and most importantly the build quality was awful. The pivots in the trigger group were free to fall out and were only restrained by the wood of the stock, they could move enough to come out of one side and the rigger wouldn't work.

The whole rifle was twisted the receiver did not run straight along the top of the cylinder, I was at the limit of the windage adjustment on the 'scope.

It was held together with screws and self dismantled regularly.

The rear sight had to be replaced by the factory as it was so sloppily made it wobbled.

I could go on. The worst part was the shape, I just did not fit it and with a scope the whole thing was horribly top heavy. I traded it in for a HW77 as soon as they came out.

I recently bought a Sterling Armament Co HR 81 air rifle. They are good old rifles, and overall I am pretty impressed with it. They were made by Sterling Armament Co of Dagenham, whose main business was the manufacture of Sterling SMG's and AR18 rifles.
The firm were part of the BAE group, and went out of business in 1989. Tools and dies for the HR81 went to America, where Benjamin continued production.

The first thing you notice about the HR81 is the weight of the thing... at a little over ...

I have just bought the Sterling Armament co HR 81 rifle. I found it to be Well-engineered, and to have good looks. I agree with other contribution it does seem to have a 'twangy' action, I'm not sure if it's a bad point though. I would love to find out more about it - can anybody help please?

I know very little about this rifle,I bought it from a gun shop that was closing down. The guy in the shop said it was great in its day, but could do with a tune and re-bluing. It has an underlever cocking mechanism, with a bolt action pellet feed. The rifle is very heavy (more so than my hw80) but has great rabbit stopping power. can anyone tell me more about it- please?
