Good Points: Relive the greatest club achievement in English football.
Bad Points: A bit dated in production, could have made it more dramatic.
General comments: The Treble DVD marked a chain of films released on the back of great sporting achievements. It was definitely a pioneering movie, as if there was ever an achievement that needed to be captured for eternity then this was it. The 1998-99 season marked an incredible achievement for Manchester United and was something never completed before in English Football and in truth is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon, if ever. In the end of an enthralling season Manchester United won the Premiership, F.A Cup and Champions League.
The DVD runs through the season, showing the major developments month by month. At the begining there was very little sign of Manchester United performing so well. The season before they had been beaten convincingly by Arsenal and they had come back from a World Cup campaign with their leading player, David Beckham being vilified by the media and opposing fans. It seemed there had been a power shift in England football and that Arsenal had taken over in top spot from Manchester United's supremacy in the 1990's. There were some pretty disappointing results in the beginning of the season, but the games being played were very exciting. Indeed the two 3-3 draws between Man Utd and Barcelona were absolute classic matches, with both teams playing exceptional football.
We see how at the turn of the year, Manchester United were still involved in 3 trophies but didn't seem favourite to win any of them let alone all three. The second half of the season saw an amazing run of form and Manchester United won many matches, often coming back from behind in the closing minutes. The use of substitutes was key and the midfield ranked among the best in Europe. The F.A cup saw Premiership opponents all the way and they managed to beat Newcastle in the final. A week later was the final week of the Premiership campaign and Manchester United needed to beat Tottenham to win the title, as usual they came back from behind and won the match 2-1.
Thus going into the Champions League final we had both Manchester United and Bayern Munich on the verge of incredible treble success. Manchester United were hampered by the suspensions of both the central midfielders, yet in an amazing final they won 2-1 with both goals coming in the stoppage time. The rest, as they say, is history. This DVD is an excellent opportunity to relive those amazing moments, one of the best was Ryan Giggs' goal against Arsenal in the F.A cup semi-final.
