X-Men 2 - Sequels are very hard to pull off. Last year, we got a whole summer`s worth. Some were good (The Matrix Reloaded), some were OK (Charlie`s Angels: Full Throttle), some were unnecesary (2 Fast 2 Furious) and some were just garbage (Legally Blonde 2). Thankfully, X2 falls into the number one category. It brings the story and charcters into new directions and introduces us to new characters as well.
Sadly, there`s no Gambit, but there is Nightcrawler (Allan Cumming), a blue guy who can teleport from one place to another. Then there`s bad girl Lady Deathstrike (Kelly Hu), who has the same powers as Wolverine. Personally, I liked Bryan`s decision to give minor characters from the first film expanded roles. One is Bobby Drake AKA Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), who can, er, make things cold. The other is Pyro (Aaron Stansfield), who can control fire. There`s a cool moment when he unleashes his powers on some unfortunate cops.
In admidst the mutants, there`s a human at the centre - the monstrous William Stryker, excellently played by Bryan Cox. He`s a military scientist who may have clue to Wolverine`s past. He is truly one of cinema`s biggest worms.
Fans can cheer that their fave characters are back. Patrick Stuart and Ian McKellen, taking time off from Lord of the Rings, relish the chance at playing friendly enemies Xavier and Magneto again. The talented Halle Berry is still a mere supporting role as Storm, but still enjoys herself. Jean Gray gets developed a bit more and those who read the comics will know it won`t have a happy ending. James Mardsen is tragiacally underused here, as he disappears for the second half. This is a shame, because he was an important character in the comics. Mystique didn`t die in the first one and her encore does not disappoint. Most importantly, Wolverine`s back and this time he takes no prisoners. He is finally the killing machine hinted at in the first film.
Overall, X2 is just as good as, if not better than, the first film. It`s better than Daredevil and The Hulk combined and the opening is worth the price of admission alone.
