The earth is under attack from the bugs and the major event in the film, is the destruction of Buenos Aires. From this point, on Starship Troopers is a gore fest.
The most of the acting is wooden, which is a shame as this was directed by Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall and Robocop). The events are OK but nothing special.
This is based (very loosely) on the Robert A. Heinlein book Starship Troopers. Watch the film then read the book. If you read the book then watch the film, you will be disappointed.

Starship Troopers has to be one of my favourite action films of all time. If you've not seen it, it's set in future and earth is under attack from a bunch of Aliens. What makes this film so brilliant is that in places it isn't that good. It's farcical and predictable at times but so thoroughly enjoyable.

Aw come on. Watch this with your tongue slightly in your cheek. It's a lot of fun and worthier than 4.

I agree with the above comment. Alright, the dialogue is dreadful ("whats your malfunction Rico?"), and the acting is pretty bad (especially Casper Van Dien, where's he now?), but the film is really entertaining. If you like action blood fests then this is your kind of movie. 7/10 from me!
