Good Points: Friendly, different, lots of character.

Bad Points: The English of the locals is not really the best (though many do speak it)
Backstreets may appear a little dirty

General comments: Although not as touristy as the country's capital, Lisbon, or the Algarve beaches of the south, Porto is worth a visit. The old part of town is truly unique and the riverside views are breathtaking!

If you want a quiet and cultural holiday try touring round the north of Portugal as opposed to the more touristy south. You can hire a car cheaply and if you enjoy wine you can go on the well known wine trail up the Douro valley. It's spectacular. The only disadavantage is that the roads are not quite up to spec and you can find yourself on a narrow cobbled lane masquerading as the main highway. Other than this the whole experience is charming and unspoiled.
