Good Points: The Celica is a most compelling design, especially so when the car is painted silver or red. Front and rear overhangs are kept to a minimum, endowing the car with a very purposeful stance. Celica was styled at CALTY Design Research, Inc., Toyota's U.S. styling studio in Newport Beach, California. Compared to past models, Celica is shorter in length, but longer in with greatly reduced front- and rear-overhangs. The nose of the car is highlighted by center of the hood features reminiscent of a Formula 1 car. Headlamp lenses, whose appearance mimics an F1's front wings, further highlight this design feature. Thanks to a stout, low mounted front cross-member that allows the radiator to be slanted, the hood slopes sharply from the cowl to the front bumper. A tightly integrated and functional hood scoop located near the cowl enhances the front end and draws cooling air over the exhaust system. It could have been part of the hood stamping but the designer, Alan Schneider of CALTY, wanted to emphasize the finished edge around the perimeter of the scoop. It may appear to be tacked on but it was definitely designed in from the beginning. Moving past the doors to the rear quarter panel the eye passes some of the most sculpted forms ever seen in sheet metal. Replete with subtle feathered creases, sharp edges and complex three dimensional shapes, this quarter panel really highlights the die maker's art. This is an astounding piece of automotive stamping and a true delight to the eye. One can wonder if it was done to show that it could be done, but it works well and integrates tightly with the overall design. In athletic terms it would be like a championship figure skater pulling off an incredibly difficult jump in the middle of an already dazzling performance -- one that had never been seen before. The designers have one more delight located in the rear. Taillight lenses protrude vertically and slightly outward from the hatchback lower lip. When viewed from the middle of the rear bumper they catch light on the protruding edges and reflect it like multifaceted jewels.
Bad Points: Very hard to clean
