“As good as you can get from an inexpensive machine.”

★★★★☆

written by mikegray on 08/04/2013

I have been using this machine regularly for two years and I am happy with the results - I also have a two pump professional Gaggia and the coffee produced is every bit as good. The only weak point is the steam valve which tends to leak after years of use. Easily repaired with new seals. Several of the other reviews point to weak coffee. It's all in the grind. To make real expresso you have to grind the beans twice. Once coarse then very fine. It helps if you also roast your own coffee - apart from being much cheaper it is far fresher as I roast weekly and grind daily. My personal preference is for Italian style coffee which is traditionally mainly robusta but adding a little arabica helps for smoothness. My own blend is 20% Indian Arabica medium roast 70% Indian Robusta medium-well roast and 10% Vietnamese Robusta very well roast. I use a popcorn popper to roast as this gives me good control.

“Makes a nice cup, quickly.”

★★★★★

written by Caixa on 29/11/2012

I picked up one of these DeLonghi machines in a charity shop for £10. I had only been used once by the look of it. Only problem was the previous owner had obviously managed to throw out the double basket (filter) when emptying the group. So I can only make single cups. I could get a replacement from DeLonghi for £2.50, but I'm a single guy and only need one espresso at a time!! I think these go for about £50-£60 new. I used to use a stove-top mocha which is a much cheaper option, but they can be a bit difficult to handle when hot, or boiling over because you forgot about it on the cooker! I tend to leave my Caffe Treviso on all morning so it's ready to brew when I need a shot. It takes about 30 seconds, no longer, to serve a single espresso so you don't walk away from it and forget. The Caffe Treviso also has the steam pipe of course which is also highly adept at doing a splendid hot chocolate as well as an impressive cappuccino. I can't say how the DeLonghi Bar 14 Caffe Treviso compares with many other machines, but compared to a friend's Gaggia that was something like £150 I'd say it holds its own in terms of producing a quality cup. It was most certainly worth every penny I paid for it, (hence the 5 stars) but I'd still rate it at least 4 stars value for money at the RRP. That's because it's definitely worth a 5 star durability rating. I've had my Caffe Treviso a couple of years now and not had a single problem with it, apart from scalding myself on the stream pipe! There are often several on ebay if you can't find one new. Seriously though, use a good coffee designed for such machines, or grind your own. It's worth the extra cost/effort.

We decided to get a new coffee maker, we initially looked at the Senseo type but decided that the better way to go was to get an espresso machine. The cheapest at the time was the Treviso and we got one from Argos.

Well out of the box I was impressed by the size of the machine, very compact. I also liked the design. Well from the off we had problems finding the best coffee for the machine but by a happy coincidence Lavazza had a promotion on at Morrisons so we got that brand.

Please note, if you buy one of these machines please buy Lavazza coffee, the ultra fine grind works superbly with this machine. Take it from a cappuchino addict, this works superbly.

The machine has a pump that delivers a good supply to the coffee holder. This delivers a good constant stream and responds quickly to the switch. The frother works well but there is a secret to it that I will now share with you.

There is a lip on the frother at the end of the bell chamber, only put it that far in the milk! Also bleed the water off into a separate cup, wait until you get a good blast of steam through it before you put the milk under it. Froths up like a demon, trust me!

So to sum up a great machine, just use Lavazza fine ground espresso machine coffee (various rtpes, espresso, cafe rost and decaffinated for a start), bleed off the water before frothing the milk and only hold the frother in to the lip on the bell, happy coffee!!!!!!!!!!

written by erena on 06/01/2011

I bought this espresso maker around three months ago. I was very excited about it but after these three months of using it I am greatly dissappointed. I would say it is a value for money becuase it is rather cheap compared to other coffee machines, but if you can afford a few extra pounds, you'd be much better buying an expensive coffee machine that actually makes good espresso. I have tried several different types of coffee, but it just tastes horrible out of this machine. It is not really an espresso coffee, its taste is more like filter coffee, rahter weak. On the good side it is easy to use, clean and maintain, but I would really advise anyone looking for a good espresso machine, save a little bit more and get a decent one.

Have to agree. My m/c does little more than give me strong black coffee - certainly not espresso, and the milk frother just about heats milk. No froth and we've given up on using that part - heating milk in the microwave is just as good, quicker and less cleaning up.
Disappointed - it feels as though the pump just isn't delivering pressure.

Bought for me as an Xmas present. Easy to fill and clean, makes good expresso with good crema, if you pack the coffee down well (the built in puck is a bit flimsy.) Steamer heats up quickly and produces a good froth, enough for a couple of cups. Makes such good coffee, easy to O.D. whilst "playing" with it!

If you're looking for a good value machine that will make one or two cappuccinos you couldn't fault this one. great for having complete control and making your coffee exactly the way you like it! The only fault is that there is limited power behind the steamer so don't go offering to make everyone a cappuccino at the end of your dinner party or you'll be there till next Christmas! Perfect if you only need to make 1 or 2 though. Bought for 50 pounds - have had it for 18 months and is still working fine - bargain!

Worst coffee machine I've ever used. It boasts a excellent crema but there isn't one; tried every brand of coffee. Customer service ("customer experience team") completely unhelpful. They said take it back to retailer, although i suggested money off against a better machine they just weren't interested. Don't but this machine Delonghi should stick to radiators. No Italian would drink this rubbish!

Firstly, I love my cappuccino. I have spend more money that I would like to admit on horrible cappuccinos made by baristas that had no love for coffee. What a revelation this Cafe Treviso is! Now I can make a cappuccino the way it should be made! So easy to use and it's basically the mini me of the large ones used in the coffee shop. The main advice is, buy a coffee ground that is very fine like Lavazza. This will produce the best flavour. To make froth on this 15 bar is dead easy. I get the same froth density as some of the best coffeeshops I've been to! Did I say I love my cappuccino, well, I have just fallen in love with my Caffe Treviso too!

The DeLonghi Bar 14 Cafe Treviso is a very very good value coffee machine. It produces the coffee reasonably quickly and the milk frother is great it gets all the froth like in a cafe!
One bad thing is that when attaching the coffee sump because the handle is plastic when tightening it on I think it feels like it is going to break, but luckily it hasn't happened!! A very good coffee machine for home use and easy to clean and of course great value!
Well Done Delonghi

I really do recommend this product.

Had this DeLonghi Bar 14 Cafe Treviso for three months now and find it very easy to use.
Main problem however is that the plastic supply pipes keep on getting a mouldy growth inside them if not used for a few days.
Does anyone know how to stop this?

Hi there,

Don't have this machine, but from experience on other coffee makers I would try to rinse the machine maybe once or twice with just water after you last use it?

Hope that helps!

Cheers

The DeLonghi Bar 14 Cafe Treviso is one of the best presents I ever been given. Cheap in price, very good in quality. Compact so doesn't take up a lot up space ."Neutral" design. Makes great espresso and manually controllable, no need to drag the cup away when you want a small espresso just switch the switch off. Works when you want it to.

“My DeLonghi Bar 14 Cafe Treviso Machine is one year...”

★★★★★

written by yamakasi on 09/08/2008

My DeLonghi Bar 14 Cafe Treviso Machine is one year old, and till now it's working perfectly. The most important part is to know how to choose the right coffee beans and how to grind them.
I suggest people to not waste their time and money with buying ready grinded espresso coffees from famous brands, because they are grinded for bigger and more professional machines and they will not work on this machine, because this machine needs softer grinded coffee, around 2 or 3 levels softer than the ready grinded brand coffees.
I buy my coffee from my friend's coffee shop, he helped me a lot untill we discovered the needed grinding level for my machine. But a grinder is different from a grinder, so you should figure out the best grinding level for you by yourself. If you keep buying your coffee from the same shop and same grinder then ask the seller every time about the level that he grinds your coffee, and if the coffee doesn't work well, ask him to grind it softer on the next time, and after several tries you will find the right level for your machine, and then every time you go to the shop you say, hey I want some espresso grinded on 5 (for example). Or you buy your own grinder and try different levels easily.
Also choosing the right coffee beans is important, I tried Colombian, Brazilian and Indian coffee beans (only these coffee beans are available in my country), and I've got the best results with Indian coffee, then comes the Colombian coffee. But the Brazilian coffee is not good for espresso, only cheap coffee shops use Brazilian coffee beans, at least that's the way in my country.
And finaly don't forget to heat up your machine well, at least for 10 - 15 minutes, even 20 minutes will give you better results. And before making espresso (before inserting the handle) run the machine to empty the water left in the pipes from yesterday, this operation will help you to get hotter and better espresso.
If the coffee is not soft enough then press it well in the handle, and if it's softer than normal then don't make much pressure in the handle.
And here is a final tip for making good cappuccino, fill a very little milk in a big cup then froth it , this will give the milk more room to froth and make the milk froth much more than filling all the milk you need and froth it at once. I make my cappuccino by frothing the milk in two steps, little by little.

Have a nice drink......

“First one leaked after 6 months. Wrote to supplier...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 25/06/2008

First one leaked after 6 months. Wrote to supplier twice, but no reply yet. Fortunately I'd bought it from Argos, so could have replacement. The replacement machine's plastic tubing doesn't get to the bottom of the water container (it's 6 cm too short - trivial complaint, but still annoying. When de scaling there is a lot of solution that can't be used as the machine 'thinks' the water tank is empty)
The end piece for frothing milk is made of too soft a plastic to withstand unscrewing for cleaning. After a few times the screw-threads had worn, & it won't re-attach. I now have to be content with espressos, or froth the milk with a battery-powered 'frother'.
I would not recommend this product to my friends. I haven't any experience of other machines to compare, so at the moment I have not replaced it with anything else.

written by philandhanataylor on 22/06/2008

We've had the Delonghi Bar 14 for 13 months now, and for several months it has been leaking, now to the point we need to get a new machine.

The main problem for us is that to get the machine fixed we would have to take it to an authorised service centre, the nearest of which is 22 miles away (we're in Reading, the centre is in Basingstoke). It's just not possible to replace the faulty gasket at home due to the way the machine is fitted together.

So we're a little disappointed, but really enjoyed the coffee and espresso we had from the machine

This is my first espresso machine and I started off using illy pre ground espresso which is perfect for this machine, I was pulling 30ml shots in roughly 25 secs after a few goes. It took me a while to learn how to steam milk adequately to get enough foam for cappuccinos, but once u get the hang of it, its dead simple. Just line up the surface of the milk with the offset at the lower end of the plastic nozzle and start from there. Practice makes perfect.

This is a light-duty machine for people who do not want to impress and will be faithful to you for years (mine is now 5-6 years old and going strong with little care... but we have good water in South Africa).
Heats up quickly so is ready in no time. But am moving on to something beautiful and more professional and will keep this machine at a 2nd home or for holidays away (does not deserve to be locked away in a dusty garage)

I am finding the portafilter is spinning round in the head and detaching when the coffee is pouring out! could it be the gasket as well as the basket at fault?
