The debut film of writer/director Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko is a great film that fully deserves its status as a cult classic. The script starts out weakly but gradually, as the plot get stranger and the events more meaningful, it becomes something very intelligent and unique. I was not impressed by the cast when I first contemplated seeing the film. Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle and Drew Barrymore are all actors who I don't usually appreciate but here, with the exception of McDonnell, they are all directed beautifully and, as a result, give the performances of their careers. Swayze in particular is brilliant. I have not seen the new director's cut, but the deleted scenes from the original DVD didn't seem to add much. Overall, this is a really fantastic movie. I highly recommend it. If you don't like it at first, just keep watching and wait for it to take effect.

The film deals with time travel, comic, existential, and nihilistic themes. It inc ...- Read Emily C's review (178 words)

Donnie Darko is a truly brilliant and disturbing film. Donnie is a teenager with some mental problems, he takes medication to control his violent impulses and he keeps seeing this rather evil-looking, giant bunny rabbit that tells him that the world will end very shortly. In the middle of all this he miraculously survives the fuselage of an airplane falling through the roof of his house into his bedroom, but the rest of the plane is never found.
The film is very strange and hard to follow a ...- Read WSD's review (167 words)
