“One of the greatest movies ever made.”

When I first watched this movie, I didn't think it was going to be any good. My best friend had convinced me to watch this 3 and a half hour long 1965 movie and I wasn't too sure how it was going to bed. But after watching the movie, I immediately knew that I had watched a masterpiece. The story is based on the best selling book by Boris Pasternak, taking place mostly in flashback from 1912-1921 Russia. It follows the story of two young people Yuri Zhivago and Larissa Antipova, also known as Lara. In the start of the film, a man named Yevgraf Zhivago, the half brother of the main character is searching for the daughter of his brother and his lover. The story follows the lives of Yuri and Lara, how they eventually meet and finally, when they fall in love. First of all, I have to comment on the acting. All of the actors, even newcomers like Geraldine Chaplin and Julie Christie, did an amazing job. There was Omar Sharif as Doctor Zhivago. Geraldine Chaplin as Tonya, Zhivago's wife. Julie Christie as Lara, Zhivago's mistress. Alec Guinness as Yevgraf Zhivago. Tom Courtenay as Pasha, Lara's husband. And finally, Rod Steiger as Victor Komarovsky. The cinematography of the film is amazingly beautiful, especially during the scenes set in the second half of the film. The landscape is wide and open, and full of color, except during the snow scenes. The music is another amazing thing about this movie. Maurice Jarre was the man who composed the music and what he created fits the film beautifully. Instead of making a main theme centered around the title character, he made a theme centered around Lara. The theme is fast and slow, it's cheerful but haunting at the same time and it's just something you could listen to for a very long time by itself. The rest of the music is really good, but it's Lara's theme that stands out the most. This film is very near perfect with only one problem with it and it's nothing major and it doesn't take away from the experience. It's the hair for the women in the film. The hair is still in the style of the 1960's, not the hairstyle for the actual time period where hair was flat, not in a beehive style. However, that doesn't take away from the film in the slightest. Doctor Zhivago is a masterpiece, romance, drama, music and acting. I am proud to be able to call this movie my favorite movie of all time.
