    Display went blank
Same as the others in my experience - The first unit went bad under warranty - The replaced unit's display/ inverter went bad, therefore I do not recommend HP Pavilion ZT1170.

My message is - I dont recommend an HP Laptop. In Dec 2006, I bought a HP laptop. Before the warranty had expired, the display unit went on it and it had to be sent back to be repaired. Five months after the repair job, the new display unit has gone and HP want to charge me £270 to repair it again. The laptop is now out of warranty, and they only guarantee new parts for 3 months. Both these have expired. I spent a total of 40 minutes, being pushed from one person to another and then havin ...

Overall this HP Pavilion ZT1170 is a great laptop - however, thinking about the future, I wish the build quality was better.

I have nursed my HP Pavilion ZT1170 along for nearly 4 years, having purchased it in December of 2001. Since purchasing it, I have had the following ISSUES:

    1) While the unit was still under warranty; sent the unit back to HP for service: ZT1170 would mysteriously, instantaneously shut down under nominal load, making the unit virtually unusable. Sent unit back to HP for repairs, they noted that they 'replaced the thermal module' on the motherboard. After disassembling the unit four separate t ...

Bought my HP Pavilion ZT1170 Laptop 3 years ago and initiallly thought how nice it was. Within the first month the display went black. A ghost of an image can be seen so I guess the inverter went out. Mine also went through the hell of constantly shutting down and rebooting unexpectedly. After talking to HP, and since it was out of warranty there was nothing to do. On one occassion, on reboot, XP pointed me to a device fault and digging further, it turned out to be memory related. After tr ...

I will probably keep my Pavilion zt1170 until it dies, but I doubt I will buy another HP/Compaq product again. The quality is just too poor. In addition to the aforementioned inverter fix, I also had to replace the hard drive because the legacy drive failed about the same time as the inverter board - too many hard shutdowns. I did luck out because I put in a 60GB 7,200 RPM drive, so performance has noticably improved. I also upgraded to XP Pro because XP Home was just too unstable (pre SP2). ...

I purchased this HP Pavilion ZT1170 new 3 years ago. Within just a few months, the screen went out and the cooling fan failed. Even after the fan was replaced, the machine still runs hot and continues to cause shutdowns from time to time. Shortly after the extended warranty ran out, the hard drive failed. I would not recommend this product or any HP computer, laptop or not, to any other person. I have had several HP products and will never buy HP again.

After my experience with the HP Pavilion ZT1170, my advice is never to purchase any HP laptops. I have bought several HP printers which have always worked perfectly.

My screen on my HP Pavilion ZT1170 is starting to blank, once again, at the most inconvenient times. When it goes out again completely or I can afford to purchase a computer other than an HP ZT1170, as per my peers have suggested, and as I will tell others... never purchase an hp anything! I will purchase a Toshiba. Sincerely, DR. Don E. Whitmire

P.S. Never depend on HP driver down loads and they have never responded to my requested!!

I bought this HP Pavilion ZT1170 Laptop remanufactured, with a 90 day warranty, for about $1700. After 120 days operation began to be sporadic: First I lost half the keyboard -- this was repaired simply by opening the machine, wiggling the connectors and closing it up again. After a year the touchpad began to freeze up frequently. Finally, after about 18 months, it boots undependably, freezing someplace in the boot process. Some days it works fine, some days it won't wake up. Sometimes cleani ...

My HP Pavillion ZT1170 had the backlight on the LCD go out. Its just over a year old and just off warranty. They wanted almost $800 for the repair, but we settled for $577. Since that fix the LCD has failed twice and the hard drive crashed and had to be replaced. Fix #1 lasted 2 weeks. Fix #2 lasted only 2 months and they tried to stick me for another $649 by claiming I physically damaged/cracked the LCD which voided the warranty. Their word against mine, but I watched the LT fail each time and ...

I live in New Mexico and have owned a zt1170 for over a year now. I have had the screen fail within the first 2 months and HP had it back to me within 6 working days. Their quick and helpful service kept me a fan of HP. (Another review stated that their laptop was set back to factory settings. They did inform me of this so that I could take out my hard drive before sending it.) I purchased a dock for the laptop and it will occasionally unmount all the connected devices. The USB ports somet ...

When I called HP...they said I must have my past Claim # (the CSO #)...they don't retain them and in order to take care of my problem (I) must furnish them. All of a sudden the HP rep. (Jason) said he just thought of an idea. He then put me on hold for 78 minutes ( he was king enough to check in with me every 15 minutes or so.......:| Anyway...he returned with the old case numbers..and gave me a current case number and said I'd be contacted within 5 to 7 days by a manager. Best buy said they ...

This HP laptop sucks. I seriously doubt that I will buy another HP product again in my whole life. I can't trust HP anymore. The keyboard stopped working several months after I bought the computer. It stayed in the factory for one week. Then one month before the 1-year warranty expired, the computer refused to start no matter how hard I and the repairman in Compusa had tried. This time, it took total about three weeks for the laptop to get repaired. The day before yesterday, the display suddenly ...
