Good Points John Thaw plays a good Tom Oakley. Bad Points The children's acting is, to be blunt, about as convincing as Flash Gordon (probably why the film focused on Tom and William's relationship). To be fair most children are OK, but Nick Robinson (played William Beech), who just so happened to be the one we see most of, had facial expressions and voice acting which were often amusing because they were so bad. Why they chose him is beyond me. Significant portions of the book were skipped... (read more)

This is a striking, moving, thought provoking film. It's good family entertainment and at the same time makes you think very hard about the issues involved. John Thaw's performance is touching and it is a shame he is no longer with us. Some of the characters are a little underdeveloped, but none of them are essential to the plot. A very moving story with a satisfying ending. (read more)

Goodnight Mr Tom Film Review
The film goodnight Mr. Tom is based around the evacuation of World War Two. In the film, a young, meek boy of 9 years old called William Beach gets evacuated from London, to the countryside. He gets partnered with a cantankerous elderly widower named Tom Oakley. The two characters naturally avoid each other, but soon develop warm affectionate feelings towards one another when Tom realizes Williams' background. It's an amalgam of adventure, and sadness which...

Goodnight, Mr Tom is a heart-warming tale of an evacuee, sent into the country from London, during the Second World War. The evacuee, William Beech, is a young boy who has been separated from his abusive mother, to live out the war in the country. He is "assigned" to Old Mr Tom Oakley, a hardened widower who lost his young wife and small son many years ago.
Mr Tom struggles to reach out to poor Willie, eventually realising that he is just a scared, lonely and abused little boy, who has...

I have read Goodnight Mister Tom twice for school, and it is full of touching emotions about the change of two peoples lives. It goes into great detail about the live of a WW2 evacuee, and a likely story at that. Not much more can be said, apart from the fact it is an awesome book, and a must read for al ages. Parents, read it to your toddlers, and keep a copy for when they start reading! (read more)

We watched and reviewed this as a class of Year nine. It is like a roller-coaster of different emotions. We feel it is realistic and believable. We like it because it has a good story-line. Perhaps the certificate should be higher, 12, because of the abuse. (read more)

I really liked when Will is evaquated from London to live with Mister Tom, Will really showed his feelings. Tom really cared about Will to kidnap him from the hospital and make him live with him. No bad points to it but could be sad at times. I really like this story it is now my favourite film i've seen and i want to read the book. (read more)

Goodnight Mister Tom is an excellent film showing the other side of war faced by those in Britain. It is a warm film showing love, friendship, kindness plus sorrow. I suppose all those things that children were faced with. However, it also shows courage and reality and also explains that there are chances of community still left. Excellent acting, superb scenery and an excellent story line. One to watch. (read more)
