Good Points: Cinematography dark and painterly.
Bad Points: Slow moving, moody, depressing. Unlikeable characters. Madame Bovary stuffing arsenic into her mouth, and all over her face strikes a ludicrous note in an otherwise sombre piece, and fails to excite emotion. Her death scene is grotesque and unsympathetic.
General comments: I kept hoping to care about any of the characters in this film but it wasn't possible.
