Good Points: This is one of my all time favourite John Wayne/ John Ford films. The opening sequence of the silloueted line of cavalry riding along the upraised railway track, with the typical John Ford camera panning is really moving as is the sudden change of mood as Colonel Marlowe enters Grants railway carriage near Vicksburg. The haunting opening soundtrack song "I Wrote My Love A Letter" by Stan Johns is so good that I defy people not to be whistling or singing it afterwards. >The story based on a true event has typical John Ford humour, sadness, intrigue, love and excellent detail. Characters strong beliefs are changed as the film progresses. Both sides of this war Union and Confederateare shown in a good light. The end is nailbitingly tense.
Bad Points: None
General comments: I recommend any Western fan to buy this film now that it is available on DVD. I only managed to see it once on TV in England and never here on New Zealand TV over the last 13 years that I have lived here. Luckily I have it on Video, and I watch it regularly. Robin
