“I decided to watch Kill Bill Volume 1 from the hype it...”

    ★★★★☆

written by Lord Lordy on 01/01/2005

I decided to watch Kill Bill Volume 1 from the hype it was given. I was slightly reluctant to do so, as I have always been led to believe hype just lets you down in the end. This is one of those times I was pleasantly suprised. I distinctly remember the Kill Bill trailer on television, and the catchy *dum de dum* tune that seemed to stick inside my head. Everybody seemed to be aware of this film but me, and the way people were talking about it was as if any other films currently in the box office were meaningless! I *had* to see this film.

Now, before anybody bashes me for making such an almost sacrilegious statement, but this is the first Quentin Tarantino film I have seen, yes, you heard me correctly First. No, I haven't seen pulp fiction, or any others, and I know I should, so please...put the blunt instruments down, I am not the enemy here, I come offering a review with no reason to give praise if not worthy of so, I'm not saying others would do such a terrible thing, but it's been known to happen, and thankfully, not important, because this *is* a great film nonetheless.

I think this gives me a slightly more interesting perspective (and hopefully insightful one) in giving a review in this case, because I'm not a "fanboy" (if you will so excuse the term), and nor did I have any previous expectations that needed to be fulfilled from watching Kill Bill Volume One. I sat down and watched the film, with only the hope that the hype it received was deserved. It was. After only watching the first 30 minutes or so, I already felt totally gripped to the opening introduction, I had a thirst for things to come, and as I continued to watch, I felt an anger towards the character known as "Bill" and felt compelled to see it through to the expected end. The film was progressive, and the plot seemed original and thought provoking. I remember watching it with my family and discussing possible outcomes that we thought were ahead for part two, obviously we were all wrong, but in my opinion it takes a pretty good film to get this family in conversation over a film like that. Kill Bill is one of those films you shout at people for talking over, or for any sound that is made that makes you miss a word or line, that is then immediately followed by irritated grumbling and a reach for the DVD remote and the rewind button.

I do have one criticism, and that is the role of Daryl Hannah, while she played the part superbly, and it is not her acting I have fault with, it was the way she was portrayed as a "B-movie villains's girl" that got to me when she was first introduced into the main plot . It just seemed a little too...commonplace.

Reviews are hard things to trust, because I doubt many people could agree on *everything* in one film, I would rather you took my review with the rest of positive reviews out there and summed them up versus the bad. This perhaps, is better than taking a leap of faith. If you like interesting plot lines, hatred and animosity for bad-guy characters.(instead of perhaps, the love of the main character so focused in other films) this film is for you. If you like thrillers, films with backbone, and highly imaginative developments, this film is for you. Heck, if you like a bit of blood and gore, this film is for you too! I could tell from this film alone that Quentin Tarantino is great at catering for an audience that many film directors seem to neglect. I give this film my "Must Watch" approval thumbs up. If you saw this and didn't pick up the second installment, I think I know a doctor who could cure that...

“Kill Bill, Volume 1 - Kill Bill is a fantastic movie...”

    ★★★★★

Kill Bill, Volume 1 - Kill Bill is a fantastic movie by Quentin Tarantino. The storyline is about a female lady (Uma Thurman) who once worked with many others for a man named Bill. But when they decide to betray her, and she finds herself shot in the head after she is about to marry a man, but is having Bill's baby, she is put into a coma and only wakes up five years later with a veangeance to kill the five who betrayed her; Bill amongst them.

The problem with this movie is it's more of a kid's movie, yet it's R18+, filled with strong, bloody violence, coarse language, one scene of very brief drug use and slight sexual content, so therefore kids can't watch it. I would say they should make a remake of the movie, perhaps a director's cut, so kids can enjoy it as well.

The other problem is the time sequence. The movie starts off five years in the past, and then goes forward five years without warning, and then jumps back four and a half years and comes back up to the present a month before the five years ahead and so on. This complicates things a bit and to understand the movie, even for adults, no matter how bad they'd say the storyline is, they'd have to watch Volume 2, which has more storyline than Volume 1, which is basically just killing and action. This movie would be perfect if they didn't have to split it in half.

All the same, Kill Bill is absolutely fantastic, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone, including children not younger than 13 who can stand the sight of blood and violence.

Kill Bill, Volume 1 is another memorable movie by "a God amoung Directors" Quentin Tarantino. Again it's jumps from the future then goes back shows you why you seen what you seen at the start. A lot of films that are 18's I don't agree that they should be 18's but this one I do. Filled with Violence, Swearing and some just plain over the top bloody moments but still worth a watch. It has some really gripping and memorable characters like O-Ren Ishii the half Japanese, half chinese American who is the leader of all the Yakuza clans in Japan or O-Ren's psycho personal body-guard Go-Go Yubari. Overall it's a great movie according to me but not for the faint hearted.

Kill Bill Volume 1 was a good film that could have been better with a bit more character development of both the heroine and Bill.

While the spurting fountains of blood were unrealistic, how much of this film represents realism???? Little things like the spurting of blood and other violent touches (e.g. where the bride pulls out one of the crazy 88's eyeballs and the film turns to black and white) I think are good as this is a very OTT film and that’s its charm. In no way am I flaming your review, I am simply putting across my opinion.
