“Bought a used pair”

★★★★★

written by Gomez312 on 04/12/2017

Big sound, big power, I picked these up for £200 with some bumps and scrapes, I have studio monitors and a live pa rig, I don’t find these harsh at all on the top end, I reckon if your room isn’t damped down they could be??? They sound fine in my room maybe a tad too heavy on bass but we all love powerful bass, I don’t use a sub with them dint feel the need to. Amp pairing will definitely change the sound, was using an av receiver at first but got shut and bought a Yamaha A-s500, big difference in sound, all in all great, prob wouldn’t pay rrp tho prob up to £500

Absolutely amazing i have used quite a few speakers and read numerous reviews about these speakers before buying them,4 drivers yes it makes a difference bi amping and bi wiring yes makes a difference using the right amp (Rotel 1080/Krell 300i/krell 400i), Perfect the mid range is soo crisp cant compliment it enough.

You do need a Sub for the party goers you cant go wrong with these babies !

It feels soo rich having it i am sure it would satisfy you for a long time!!!

B&W DM604 S3 is a great speaker! Clear sound and good power handling. Tight bass and crispy high sound. Ideal for larger rooms. Need a strong amplifier to control lower frequencies, otherwies the speaker becomes a bit boomy.

I use the two speakers as a stereo Hi-Fi, playing vinyl only. Buy these speakers you won't be disappointed.

“When it comes to clarity, control and the reproduction...”

★★★★★

written by nickheath01 on 22/01/2007

When it comes to clarity, control and the reproduction of subtle, low-level detail in audio material, the 604's have no rival in it's class. These speakers absolutely amaze me. They never distort at high volume. They control massive bass with ease and with them having an independant midrange driver you will hear sounds in your favourite tracks that you never knew were there. I've owned speakers that cost twice the price of the 604's and didn't get sound as pure as these. What you hear is music precisely as it was recorded in all it's origional colour, texture and authority.
Simply amazing. B&W... Listen and you'll see...

“I have had the B&W 604 s3 stereo speakers for about 6...”

★★★★★

written by yvesdrp on 31/07/2005

I have had the B&W 604 s3 stereo speakers for about 6 months now. These speakers are fantastic as fronts for surround systems (no subwoofer needed), but they sound extremely musical too in a 2 channel hifi setup. The quality of the tweeter is very good. Extremely well balanced: clear high, very good midrange, good bass. Good value for the money - Try to get these for about 1050 euro (1300 euro catalogue price - 20%) These are very good fronts in that price range...

“The B&W 604 s3's have a large presence in a room - and...”

★★★☆☆

written by RMARKWEL on 10/11/2003

The B&W 604 s3's have a large presence in a room - and not only in size and looks. They have the ability to bring to life previously dull and uninteresting tracks with their massive in-your-face sound.

However, this sound comes with a cost. Reference quality? - No certainly not. The quality is almost laughable at this price (£800). This is not to say they are bad but 800 quid is an unfair price to pay for mediocre results. These are after all 602's (£300) with 2 extra bass drivers per speaker.

The most obtrusive thing to the quality is an overly loud tweeter, which causes annyoying, even painful sibilance on certain tracks. I rarely have the eq switched in on my pre-amp but these speakers need it to take the edge of this nasty treble.

I owned a pair of these speakers for a year until two months ago when I sold them to buy a pair of Kef Q7's which I enjoy far greater although may not be able to take as bigger thrashing as the B&W's, which will take 150W's+ all day long. I'd recommend the KEFs over these any day, the bass is far tighter and there is soundstaging! (Those who own these b&w's will look puzzled..)

Great for house parties, home cinema and dancing round the room to.

Serious musical quality? Na.

I was rather suprised to read some of the conclusions in this review. I agree that these speakers bring to life tracks that you don't even notice on many other speakers--an admirable quality in my opinion. What I disagree with is the comments on the tweeters. I bought these for the improved high ranges and I have not been disappointed. I have never had better sounding treble. To my ear, the highs, lows and mid-ranges are well integrated. I am satisfied that I got a great pair of speakers for my money.

I feel you must have a bad setup or a duff pair or cloth ears..only joshing....
But something is wrong here. Can nearly every expert out there be so wrong. Me included. I feel that one of the best speakers out there deserves more than 1.5 stars for value??? They blow me away everytime.

What the hell are you people on about? These speakers are outstanding. All I can think when you say they sound better one day than they did another day is you have a weak link in your system, or you don't leave your amps turned on all the time (which you should) and you just don't have the ear for sound reproduction. Please don't write bad reviews about things you don't understand.

Greg33706's Response to RMARKWEL's Review

i had these speakers for sometime now and before i start i just want to tell you i know clean, clear sound. i always get the best of everything so i thought i was getting the best speakers b&w. these are nice speakers dont get me wrong, and they sound good/great when watching a movie (just watched "brave heart" on them last night) and they can play loud, really loud and clean so the voicals sound great. i tested these speakers to the max with a 1000 watt parasound amp (only ran 250watts to speaks) i got them to the point where i got the one speak to clip ( one of the 7" subs), but they are loud and clean vocials. great to show off to your friends

so where do they lack... the speakers are not a clear, clean sound at low/med volume and to me they sound a bit muddy. while playing fm music or a cd you dont get to where you get lost in the sound and float away. it sounds like something is not there- it sounds like someone is holding a piece of paper over the speakers or there is a wall the speakers can't get over to sound crystal clean. but its werid cause at other times i can hear little details in movies and songs that i dont hear on other speakers. are these speakers good, hell yeah - are they great, i wouldn't go that far. heard the 700's and 800's are a lot better. you also need a good sub the make these speakers shine. im now looking at the paradigm speakers or martin logans to replace.

I used to own the B&W 602 s3, but found them lacking. I when out and listened to lots of diiferent speakers and found none measured up, Apart from the 604 s3. These speakers are wicked, give them a go, Great for Hifi and Great for Home Cinema, but be warned, your neighbours will hate you.
