Sales was fine; it's the repair that's the problem. Product was out of warranty (just) and Comet's first "mistake" was to claim it was the manufacturer's responsibility. Quoted Sale of Goods Act (SoGA) and they quickly changed their mind.

First engineer failed to diagnose the fault and tried to charge labour which I refused. Comet wanted to charge for a second visit, again I refused as original fault hadn't been fixed. Quoted SoGA and again they changed their mind immediately.

Second engineer found the fault, £101 of parts required (probe and circuit board). Had to return to fit the parts. Argued that Comet should be paying for circuit board as it was not a wear-and-tear item but happy to pay for probe. They claimed SoGA only covers "major components" - SoGA does not make any such mention; it's only Comet's interpretation of the SoGA that calls it major components, and even so, a fault transistor preventing the machine working is just as major as a big motor, for example.

Eventually settled on 30% of parts costs. I lost out slightly but not as much as they would have charged had I not known my rights under the Sale of Goods Act - would have been £320 or more otherwise - but wasn't worth arguing the extra few quid.

Ironically the engineer said that as the machine didn't cost much, I shouldn't expect much from it and that machines would cost thousands if they put quality parts in there! They don't seem to have factored in the cost of having an engineer out thrice to fix the damn thing - nearly as much as the machine itself!

Make sure you know your rights as they lied through their teeth until I told them I knew what my rights were, and then they magically backed off immediately. Probably no worse than any other big company but even so. It doesn't matter how much you paid for it, if it's brand new then you should expect several years' service from it.

Thanks to the consumer direct website and helpline for their advice.

Bought a Laptop with Vista Home Premium and was told by staff that when Windows 7 came out I could pick up a free copy from any store.
When it came to collecting my free Windows 7 was told by the store manager to apply on line to the Laptop makers.
On line the manufacturer wanted approx £30 p&p.
I emailed Comet to ask that they honour their promise and was told that it did not matter what their employees said or what was displayed in store they would not supply a free copy.

We ordered a Hoover Washer / Dryer from the Comet website, which was easy to use and arrange delivery. Although everything was delivered and installed OK the issues arose when we discovered that the machine was faulty.

The washing machine started leaking so we immediately 'phoned Comet. They arranged for an 'engineer' to come round, however he incorrectly blamed our outlet pipe instead of actually spotting that the machine was leaking. In order to get an exchange we were told that another en ...

The only reason I ordered the item from Comet's website was the information stating that they offered free delivery and installation - On delivery they informed me that they were not aware there was an installation. I called customer services office and was advised that they were fully booked and I had to wait until friday to have the item installed. This means another day'sleave I must take and the inconvenience of a further two days without an oven. The girl did say she would refund the delive ...

A useless company. Tried to buy item twice on line but the payment failed, as did numerous attempts to email comet through their on line system. Every method fails and you have to spend a fortune hanging on the phone speaking to rude staff. Fridge freezer was finally ordered but on delivery the driver asked me if i wanted the wrapping removed and i replied yes (Obviously). However, instead of removing wrapping once the item was safely inside my home they took it off in the van then proceeded ...

Lousy customer service. I asked for refund and Comet called the police. Never have I experienced such nasty staff. I will speaking the OFT. Their Policy seems to be if you open the box and find the product unsuitable,no refund. I returned the item in 24 hours.
Police were Ok, they should charge comet wasting their time !!!!

This is a review of the Comet store at Team Valley, Gateshead.

I have recently been looking for a new cooker, we finally found a Beko 50cm solid top cooker with glazed doors at Comet in Team Valley and thought 'perfect'. Sat down to start the ordering process, gave my details, arranged a delivery date and then we got to the 'do you want extended cover' question. We said 'no', the salesman started to push, offering the longer cover for a cheaper price, but still £54 which is a large percen ...

we bought a camera for our daughter so she could have a photo album to take to university covering her last family holiday etc. On holiday the camera jammed, no photos, took the camera back when we got home, it was sent away and repaired. It lasted 2 weeks, same again, sent away and repaired. On the very day she was going to uni, you gussed it, the same thing happened. Our biggest gripe is that the staff, showed no compassion even though he could see our car outside loaded to the hilt. Apparantl ...

Purchased £2000 worth of goods from comet two weeks ago including a Zanussi gas cooker.

On arrival early morning the cooker was demonstrated and found to be faulty. We were assured there would be a call from Comet that day with a view to repair/replacement but we received no call. There was no call the following morning so we had to contact Comet. Finally got a promise to deliver a replacement unit the following week on Tuesday 22nd Sept.

On the morning of 22nd having received no cont ...

Tried to order fridge freezer from Comet but the payment process failed twice. When calling Comet they said they'd have to start the order all over again which we did. Payment was taken but they were unable to confirm a delivery slot owing to their systems not showing the correct dates. Said they'd call us later that day to confirm delivery but didn't. Having called to chase up the order they now say it's out of stock. Hopeless beyond belief. The onus on us is now to call back when the product i ...

I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT A FRIDGE FOR OVER 1 MONTH NOW!!!!!!!

Bought a Whirlpool fridge freezer with 5 years extended warranty from Comet in March 2008. The fridge freezer stoped cooling in July 2009. On 15th of July 2009 I made the initial phone call to Comet and the engineer came out 6 days later saying the fridge needs regasing and that he will send someone else to do it. In 5 days I was expecting someone to come and regas the fridge but an engineer turned up with no tools and established that t ...

I bought a Samsung LCD TV on the 17th May and then had it replaced on the 19th due to faulty speakers. The screen then went on the new television! It took a week for an engineer to attend and then a further week for a manager to ring me after 18 phone calls from myself to discuss a replacement. Comet were not interested and demanded that they repair the second faulty set, which I am not impressed with at all. The manager that rung was very arrogant and I feel that I have been let down by Comet. ...

Wish I'd read these reviews before ordering a dishwasher online from Comet. On all their notices they say that delivery is before 6pm. That is until you call them and it suddenly becomes 7pm. Very unprofessional and in no way willing to take responsibility. Constantly trying to shift the blame onto the manufacturer. I would avoid and use a company that is willing to invest in some customer services.

What should be an easy process (ordering a dishwasher from Comet's online shop), was a horrendous experience. I ended up making 5 phonecalls (as for some reason they cancelled my online order), gave details at least 6 times (system crash, wrong info input etc etc), No email confirmation was ever received (I was told I'd get this immediately). I called to check that the order was in fact in place and delivery would take place as discussed, to be told that my order had been cancelled, this happene ...

Purchased an Apple Time capsule 1tb from Comet, reasonable price £349.99 and the usual price for one was £375, but later that week Apple introduced the 2tb vesion so the price of this one dropped to £229.99, seeing as I hadnt properly used it yet (literally just plugged it in once) I thought I might try and return it and get a refund, then buy one for £229.99 but because I had plugged it in that classified it being 'used' and they would not accept any sort of refund.

    I ...
