I really like this gun, ive owned single shot pellet guns before but this is my first co2 cart. powered gun (although I have used them in the past) this one looks great, feels well made, and never misfires. it holds 8 rounds which can be shot off as quick as you can pull the trigger. only plastic i see on it is is the side grips that pop off for co2 change. reloading mechanism feels solid. don't really have anything bad to say about it, all around quality pellet gun. This is by far the best pistol umarex has to offer. Its pretty powerful at around 390 fps and its very accurate to! i can get a nice 1 1/2 inch group at around 10-15 metres. Its well built german quality and you can feel this when its in your hand. I like my compact pistols and i also own the cp99, But if i had to choose between any of the umarex range of pistols, The cp88 would be my first choice, The beretta 92f is quite similar in design but is a little bit more heavy and the 92f has a... The Walther CP88 is a nice heavyweight replica of the 9mm P88. Great fun for plinking in the garden or accurate enough for target shooting at up to 15m.Easy to load and change Co2 cartridge it is a quality item. There are far more powerful air pistols but not many as much fun to use as the CP88. Lots about and good used ones are easy to find, mine was £89 from a local dealer still in original case with Co2 and pellets. You just cant stop using it and its so hard to put down! (read more)

When I noticed the CP88 in a Gunshop window I asked in the Gunshop what the gun was and could I have a look at it. I own the 4' blued Walther cp88 with walnut grips. It was the only pistol in the shop that felt correct in my hand. I have medium to small hands(5'9' 74kg). It has a nice solid well balanced weight, @95 metal construction(wood grips). Excellent power, especially at the start of a co2 canister, fairly loud too. I found some pellets a little long and would not work correctly in the rotating mags. I highly recommend Crossman premier domed. Very accurate, especially taking cocked single shots.... (read more)

This is a very well made pistol, accurate and simple to use.
The saftey catch is well placed, but was a little stiff when new.
The only problem is when the pistol is first loaded and the hammer is pulled back, the pistol does not always load fully and the hammer will not stay to the rear.
Otherwise, this is a very well made pistol and I would recommend before the Walther CP99

The Walther CP88 when new was great: had a good amount of power- would easily take down small vermin, good accuracy and was reliable. Due to excessive use and wear and tear, the teeth on the mags have worn down and is no longer semi-auto (this however could be soon resolved with new mags) and power seems to have considerably dropped even when a new cartridge is installed. Another gripe is the fact that the breech can stick. I am soon going to renew this pistol and will seriously consider... (read more)

Magazine a bit fiddly to load on the walther cp88, will not fire unless lined up precisely. Apart from that little niggle this is a very well made and reliable gun.
The balance and accuracy are spot on and if well maintained should give many years of happy recreational target shooting.
If you enjoy rapid shooting then spare magazines are a must unless you actually enjoy reloading them in the field every two minuets.

I have a small correction for the sticky latch fix i posted above. I wrote:<br/><br/>"Gently file the front sides of the slide catches and front corners and edges of the catches so the sharp corners become just the slightest bit rounded and smooth. do the same gentle filing on the sharp corners and edges where the latches catch on the slide."<br/><br/>It is actually the BACK edges and corners of the moving catches that should be gently smoothed with the file, not the front...so, as you can probably figure out...on the SLIDE it is the side/edge that faces the FRONT of the cp88...on the CATCHES that move up and down, it is the side that faces the REAR of the cp88.<br/><br/>You see, this is where the friction and catching happens when the lever is pressed. I also neglected to mention that this is all powered by one big spring at the front of the slide...so if there is roughness or sharp edges it causes it to stick. It is all very very easy to put back together so dont be intimidated by my over-detailed expalnation. the fix I read elsewhere online was kjust a simple sentence or two, but I tried to explain it in painful (excruciating) and largely unedited detail on a late night so forgive me :-)<br/>

Accuracy wise, its not too bad on new gas when shot slowly. I found I could get groups of 3cm at 10m with the first 32 rounds. After this the pellets tend to go where they want. If fired fast accuracy would be unacceptably wild after just 8 shots. You can see the pellets flying in every direction.

If you don't like the cheapo plastic grips, must make one. Since the grips' geometry is straight (no funny curves), it should be a snap. You can just trace the original plastic over a sheet of paper, cut it up, paste it on a thin piece of wood, and band saw it at the hi school or adult night school wood shop. If no shops available, just buy a jeweler's saw. You might have a problem finding a good piece of walnut at homeDespot however. Mahogany would be pretty and easier to cut and sandpaper. Many target pistols' grips, such as morini grips or nil griff'es, or fung's are stapled (pricked with ice pick) rather than knurled.

<br/>Formal air pistol competition is still a very young
<br/>sport. The first World Championship was held less
<br/>than twenty years ago, and it was introduced as an
<br/>Olympic sport in 1988!
<br/>
<br/>Competitors use .177 calibre pistols to fire lead
<br/>pellets at targets 10 meters away. The bullseye has
<br/>a 11.5mm 10-ring, with the entire target being just
<br/>15cm across.
<br/>
<br/>You may want to buy a higher quality airpistol: Drulov DU-10
<br/>
<br/>Use bench rest test with a scope to test the true accuracy of your pistol.
<br/>If you don't have a machine rest like ransom rest, you can use 3" machinist vice:
<br/>
<br/>1. Stack 3 hardbound heavy books
<br/>2. Put (or make) sandbag on top of above <-- the bag has infinite adjustment heights
<br/>3. Wrap 1 & 2 with a big beach towel
<br/>4. Grip your air pistol's barrel with the 3" machinist vice. Be careful not to collapse the air/gas
<br/> tank. protect the finish with a small wash cloth
<br/>5. Put the vice and pistol combo atop the stack
<br/>6. Use Bushnell 6x pistol scope or redDot 1x scope on the pistol to eliminate your eye focus
<br/> deficiency
<br/>7. squeeze the trigger holding breath. You'll need a plenty of practice to do this. May require 3 trips to your target range or garage, well lighted. put a search light onto the target of 6mm dot.

Yes I agree. The Walther CP38 is a very good gun. I have had mine now for three years, and I just love it. The gas bottle can be a bit expensive if you do a lot of shooting down the club, but it is worth it, as I can now group around the bull and in the bull 8 shots 177, and the gas bottle just keeps going. Good fun in competitions: Remember if you are going for a clean kill, get a gun that does the job. Look up on the internet, and it will tell you which gun. If you get it wrong the animal will suffer. Remember the splat test, have a read up on it and look up and get the right pellet.

Interesting to read your comments. I too own a Walther CP88, and I love it. The sales guy, a well informed gent from Manchester Airguns, advised against the Co2 canister containing oil. He advised me to buy only Walther Co2, which does not contain oil like the Crossman bottles. I think a little more research is required. However, I suppose one canister in say 20 would not do any harm.

I own 6 CO2 pistols, I have to say I don't have a CP88 though. I always use the Crosman CO2 cartridges and every 10 cartridges I put a couple of drops of Crosmans Pellgunoil on the main seal, I have been told this keeps the seal from "drying out" and makes it lasts longer. I suppose everybody has there own opinion on the best way to maintain an airgun. I can safely say up to now my seals haven't given me any trouble, touch wood!!!

I just bought the CP88 which put the CP99 right in it's place. The gun feels sturdy. My only two guffs are the release catch for the magazine. Like you said you need a knack for it and I think i've pretty much mastred it. My second guff is the release for the CO2 at the bottom of the pistol. Purchased my Walther CP88 - 4'', blued, plastic grips - for €150 from a retailer in my hometown. Accurate up to 15-20 m. Boris, I would say yes; it would probably last forever (won't rub off)...

I don't know but I hope so, as my black one has now lost about 50% of the finish. It hasn't chipped or flaked off, just worn away with handling & rubbing against clothing.

I have used airguns for about 20 years,so,i've tried some. I've got a daisy 15xt,powerline 617x. These are very powerful. Walther ppk(maybe the less powerful pistol but well made and fun to use whith the blowback style),I own to, a Anics A-3000 skif,it's a very powerful pistol but had to return it to the seller twice because of the co2 leak. So I changed it for a Walther CP88. There is nothing to compare with the Walther CP88. I was hesitating between the Gamo PT80 and the CP88,be serious... (read more)

I bought a Walther CP88 nickel/plastic CO2 Pistol and it looked perfect, but shot like a dog (weak) in double action. Single action was strong. Sometimes, in double action mode, the pellet would barely leave the barrel. I have read other accounts of this. Also, the thing jammed almost every magazine load, regardless of pellet type. The slide always stuck shut. I took a chance and exchanged for a different CP88.
Pyramyd Air in the US sent me the new CP88 and WHOAH!! What a difference. It has...

i know the ones by pyramid air are made by walther but i would like too know who your previous one was made by so i know i musn't buy that one. was it made by crosman?

Both guns I had were Walthers from Pyramid. The second one was made in 2005 (2 years newer) and has some design changes which make it shoot better. I notice no difference in power between single and double action, and no jamming.

The Walther CP88 is very accurate.
Trigger pull in double action is very smooth.
Single action shooting is great and the trigger is very touchy but great. CO2 loading is excellent and clip loading is great as well.
The walther CP88 mine is a 4 inch model and soon to be 6 inch model with the conversion kit. It is scope mountable with the Walther rail kit which I got next as a laser for it.. great gun loads of power and hits really hard totally a nice piece....

Saw the Walther CP88 in my local gun shop for £170 and thought it was the going rate. I was going to buy it there until I went to another shop with a mate and picked it up for £120 which I thought was a bargain. I was wrong. If I had bothered to buy a Airgunner magazine I would have found out that I could have got it for £89. Gutted.
All that aside I think it's a great gun that shoots accurately, looks real and is loads of fun.
