although power was still running through to the powered head on my 10 year old Miele Revolution, the connection began to work intermittantly. The original power-head was replaced 14 months ago on a regular service by Miele. Miele Customer Service told me it was now too expensive to repair & as the Revolution is no longer made I should now consider buying a new vacuum cleaner & offered to dispose of my old machine. Miele Revolution 500 has superb suction, very user friendly with controls on handle making it easy to use. Rather heavy and cumbersome, especially on stairs. After 8 years use it keeps stopping and starting and I'm told that there is a weakness with the wires in this particular model. Replacement parts £140 - not worth repairing so very disappointed. Been advised to go for Cat and Dog model. Shame as I really liked the controls on the handle on the Revolution 500. (read more)

The Miele Revolution 500 is as effective on carpets as most uprights, and much easier to haul up & down stairs. It is much quieter and more manoeuverable than the Dyson cylinder it replaced. The Electrobrush & variable power settings provide excellent control of suction.
There is a promotional offer, until end-2001, of a free car-clean kit, worth £40, with each Revolution 500 purchased.

You will struggle to find one of these cleaners, not because they don't make many but because they sell out so quickly. I decided to apply my engineering background to the choice of a new cleaner - the biggest problem being lint from socks and cat hairs on the carpets.
This machine has a seperate electric motor in the head that powers a brush to sweep the carpet. You also get a pretty big 1600watt motor to suck it all up, so as a package it's very efficient.

I have been driving myself and anyone who will listen bonkers trying to decide on a vacuum. This has finally helped me to make up my mind. Thank you very much, I'm just about to order one and I'll let you all know how it goes.

The stop/start problem is almost certainly caused by the slip rings located just where the hose enters the handle becoming dirty. Disassemble the handle by removing the 5 screws that hold it together (one of the five is in the ring that hold two sides of the handle together where the hose enters the handle, the rest are on the left half of the handle looking towards the head). Clean the rings and the printed circuit contacts and reassemble.
