Stone Temple Pilots' Shangri-La Dee Da opens with some fantastic hard rock tracks, namely "Coma" and "Hollywood ***** ". Unfortunately, the awesome momentum gained here is all lost when the album withers away into soft, sleepy tracks that could induce the aforementioned coma.
I have all the respect in the world for Stone Temple Pilots, and this album is not bad by any means. It just seems to me that the band's descent into a gentle, more soothing sound betrays their heavy, semi-metallic roots in classic albums like Core.
Overall, I don't recommend this album, though it is a respectable entry. Its lack of vitality after the first four tracks makes it seem to drag on just a bit too long and makes it their weakest entry thus far. Still, Shangri-La is still more enjoyable than many albums on the market.
