Good Points: It's Suede! It's got all the singles! It's got new stuff!
Bad Points: It is a bit of a cop-out to release a singles collection instead of a proper best of with some classic gems from the albums....
General comments: Suede, Singles - This compilation proved to be Suede's swansong to their fans, who were, pretty much, the only people who bought it. It features, surprise surprise, all of the Singles released by Suede over the course of their career, and what a blinding set of songs these are! Early classics such as "The Drowners" and "Animal Nitrate" still hold up well over a decade later and newer tracks such as "Can't Get Enough" and "Obsessions" actually do fit nicely amongst the earlier brilliance of the band. While it would have been nice to see the band compile a Best Of instead, featuring some of their album tracks as well (surely drawing attention to outstanding songs such as "The 2 Of Us," "Asphalt World," "Pantomime Horse," "By the Sea," "He's Gone," etc., could only be a good thing), having all the singles in one place actually makes for a pretty good collection. Plus, the 2 new tracks, "Attitude," which showcased the band's ability to continue to grow musically even to the end, and the raunchy rocker "Love the Way You Love" are welcome additions to the Suede canon.
The real problem with this CD is that if you already have the albums, and if you bought the singles, the only NEW track was really "Love the Way You Love." Had the band released a limited edition with videos or a DVD (like they did in Asia), sales would have been a lot higher, because it was only fans who bought this, and this fan saw no point in buying the UK version and instead ended up paying over the odds to get the version with the live VCD from China. But that's really just a marketing mistake, not a fault with the collection (or the beauty that is Suede).
