I purchased a 93 squarelamp Toyota Starlet GT 3years ago with intention to track it but it was that good I decided to multi task and use it everyday... It had done 150k kilometres and the turbo seals decided to go (It was running higher boost with upgraded bits here and there) so it was going to give up sooner or later. I upgraded my turbo brakes coilovers etc and its amazing. Yeah it doesn't have the low down grunt of a big engine but once they hit boost they are really quick. The... (read more)

This car is an animal, not many half decent cars can keep up with the staggering 0-60 time of 6.9s for the EP82 which is identical to the 0-60 of a BMW 330ci. The Toyota Starlet GT is also easily tunable and with a resonable amount of money spent on good aftermarket parts you could be running around 180bhp with 1 bar boost, which let me tell you form my own experience is a lot and provides serious acceleration. You will pick up a good condition EP82 with a few stage 1 mods such as filter,... (read more)

I have had my starlet for 2 years now, and i can tell you driving this car is a thrill. Whenever you switch the turbo to high, it simply jerks, picking a thrilling speed. I always have friends asking me what make of a car is this. It doesn't look very new, but its an authority on the road. Please Note: This speed isn't for starters as the car isn't very stable at high speed. You need yo get used to driving it before you try the high turbo option. SOBER DRIVERS ONLY!!! (read more)

Owned my car for 2 years and I can say after queuing most of the top hot hatches this car is way up there with Evo STi GT-R... Now maybe not in performance but if you take into account the low running costs 311 + km to £20.00 on low boost. The engine and box is bullet proof. No worries there. Wheel bearings do go often at £50.00 a time. Parts do cost and best place to find them is the online owners clubs.

GT Tuning = muppet. How about a twin engined nova with 2 calibra turbo engines? Couldnt beat that! i know one of these exists. I asked Regal Autosport about a 4x4 conversion for mine, and they said they were doing a twin engined turbo for someone. I will be after ive finished having my fun with this car. Will be buying an Mitsi EVO or an R33 Skyline.
My mate had a 235GTT and prefers my car because 1. it has better power across the rev range.
2. Doesnt blow up as easily.
3. Dont have to drive with the turbo spinning for decent power.
And its not all about BHP when racing people. I know people who have less powerful cars, but will still beat me round country lanes. Thats because they are willing to push their car that little bit more. Have to really fight to keep the car out of the hedge to beat one of them! Grade A nut bag :P But in a straight line i can beat em ;) Its not all about traffic light races you know.

You said it, it’s all about being able to drive quickly around the windy stuff, not just having a big old engine with a lot of power [and no traction!!] for the traffic lights GP.

Nova + heavy old engine that was never ment to be there over the front wheels = manic under steer = hedge or lamp post !!

R5 GTT = 750 Kg + lively engine with plenty of available power [when you know how to drive it properly ;-) ] + the ability to corner rather well = see you later nova boy !!

The engine isnt much heavier than a GTE lump. Takes the car from 837 up to around 880-890 kgs. So you gets a 45ish kg increase on the front of the car. Which doesnt affect the handling as much as you would think.
The car doesnt understeer anymore than it would with the 1.6 in it, i found the front does tend to bounce more tho.
I could spend money on having the engine lightened, but whats the point? My mates GTT didnt go round the corners any better than my car does, just responds to steering a little quicker. Its actually easier for some reason to get the car to oversteer, rather than understeer. Plus a lift off the throttle helps the ass to come round.
I wouldnt mind owning a GTT just for a laugh to see what they're like, but they dont last long and thats a fact. As soon as you give them a decent caning, they decide to die. Not all GTTs do, but a vast majority of them will. Known at least 4 people who have had 1, and all had engine problems. If I can get hold of a R5 with a 1.8 turbo, then i will take it. Its better to start with as much CC as you can get, then start tuning.
If you get a chance, have a drive of a 2L 16v turbo nova, you may actually change your mind on what you think of them ;)
How did this turn from a Starlet review to a GTT vs Nova contest? LOL. Starlet engine too small for me. Moving up to an EVO or Skyline next. BHP per ton will suffer, but better cars at the end of the day.

your nova must turn heads they are so rare every one has to look at it! why would you want to stick to engines in a nova? you would have to change everything on the car from the breaks to suspension to chassie. if you was going to spend money doing this and you want speed i can think of a lot of better ways of spending your money!

I'm from Malta and I'm also a local drag racer. A new Toyota Glanza has recently been added to the list of competition cars. It might sound incredible but it's running 12 seconds! That's not a joke man. Ok he's got NOS but 12s are an achievement even for a Cosworth, and we're not talking about 2000cc engine here. It's just 1300cc. Some say he's swapped the engine block with a 1500cc one but I'm not sure if that's possible since I'm not so into Japanese cars.

You can check it out at www.maltadragracing.com, there's a picture of it in one of the last events of this year.

Well not to lower down your morale, but making 14.8s with 32psi boost on an Isuzu 1.7TDi, that's not much. Here in Malta all the Isuzu Novas make at least 14.5s with less boost. Then there are others who make even less like a Daewoo Racer making 13.5s, and an Escort Mk1 and a Marina van making less than 13.0s.

Diesel cars are running pretty fast locally and intimidating the petrol ones.

15.714s??? A standard GT Turbo can do 15s straight in a 1/4 mile. I know it might sound much like it did it to me before I actually got proof.

I've got a Ford Orion Mk1 with a S2 RS Turbo. With just a Kent CV35 cam, T3 with 15-18psi boost, bigger intercooler, Pace Pro Alloy Radiator and a Motorcraft ECU... I'm running 13.69s and I'm sure that if I have a good run I can do 13.5s. And don't forget that Orion's are very heavy, more than Escort's.

I would like to give you advise why have you fitted a petrol engine in your RST orion and spend double the money for tuneing it if you fitted a isuzu1.7TD at LM350 and tune it for less then 1/2 the engine cost and you will do run the same time or my be less.

yeah, my car is standard and has done 70k and I realised after the run my engine mount had snapped and after the first run the clutch was slipping. Also, I am only running 9psi boost so yours is going to be faster and at the end of the day, my starlet has cost me £2500, how much have you spent on yours? And I am only 18.

Maybe you're right apart from the amount of money you mentioned. It would cost much less than an RS Turbo, but at the end of the day you know you have a diesel engine and MUCH less potential than an RST. RST's can be highly tuned keeping in mind the 2.0ltr ZVH block conversion, not to mention that it is a very strong engine particularly the crank and block. And with difference to Japanese cars, Ford have high torque and cheaper & more accessible parts.

By the way I never mentioned the word 'standard', I only mentioned with 'less boost' which I am sure about. For example one of the reasons why the orange Marina van is running those incredible times is because of its Avenger differation.

Hey, ive just been reading your coments about starlet gt's (and novas!) I quite fancy a starlet glanza V (turbo) and was wondering if anyone could tell me what insurance group they are currently in? My lastest project is a G40 mk 4 polo (very quick but i would have to sell a kidney to keep it, its costing me so much! ;-) Also how are glanza's for parts and fuel?

I first saw a starlet when I went to my first cruise in Birmingham (the s bends) 1yr ago.I was driving a 120bhp Tigra 1.6 only light mods. Anyway I saw this small black car leaving wrx's, r5's, rst's, every thing it raced. I asked my mate what car was it as I'd never saw it before. He never knew either! Parked up next to him and asked the geeza. He said starlet gt turbo!! I wanted 1 there and then, I mean there were cars there with a lot more powerfull cars and they couldn't touch it on a long straight, or handling. Novas had no chance! It is true it has a lot to do with how some one is willing to drive their cars to get good performance, I have a Astra mk3 gsi turbo that I do a lot of motorway driving in and get a lot of the saxo vtr/s xr2i etc drivers trying to race me on the motorway. Around bends I don't try to push the car because a mk3 gsi is not a very good car around bends unless it's got real good aftermarket springs and shocks so they get the upper hand. But as soon as the straight comes I just blow past them and watch them disapear in my mirror.
I would like to buy one of these cars and use it for weekend use but have difficulty finding one as they are very rare and I only want the GLANZA V version. I had a punto gt turbo but wanted something more tunabe, stronger and reliable. I'm not sure what I need to check for on these cars when buying either, and are they 1.4 engines or 1.3's? If any one can help can you leave some comments please.

The Starlets are very reliable and quite easy to modify. With just a few performance mods you can get into 13-14 second quarters. Check out www.toyotagtturbo.com, it's a great website.
