i bought my 1.6 16v sxi about a year ago, its an x reg 2000 when bought it had around 90.000 on the clock and a year later just approaching 100, this car i highly rate, ive had the usual xr3i,s cavalier sri,s focuses an mondeo,s but i have to say the astra is a much all round better car, ive never had any trouble at all and allways start regardless of the weather, you have enougth room for your family and does indeed drive very smoothly with allways a smooth gear change and when the litluns... Not a very comfortable ride.
Gear stick knob became loose while still in the 3 year warranty, vauxhall UK said it came under trim, and would`nt replace or repair it, also said we had treated it roughly.
Rear back lights steams up in damp weather.
Interior also steams up in damp weather, unless using heater fan.
I will not be buying any vauxhall ever again.
PS the warranty is not worth the paper it`s printed on.

I have had this car for a while now and I have had no great problems with it. I purchased it with 80,000 miles on the clock and it seemed to be running well still.
The performance is good and the insurance is cheap.
Boot space is great, lots of room in the boot for most things. The back seat fold down for more if needed. If you want to store stuff in the back without folding the seats down, it is sometimes awkward fitting them in.
Petrol consumption is average. Much better on long...

When I purchased this car over a year ago, I made the mistake of the minority of a potential car buyer! My Astra is a Cat C (repaired and insured). I travel 100 miles approx daily to work and this car has been solid as steel in and out!The interior has excellent build quality with great emphasis on minimal vibration both idle and motorway. Needless to say the buttons on the dash are a doodle (but slightly outdated). Performance wise, its excellent considering I hit the speedo at least 100mph... (read more)

I bought my MK4 Astra 1.6 16V SXi this year for £1500, it had a full years MOT and 5 months tax and only 90.000 on the clock which i think is good for an 8 year old car.
When i got into the car for the first time my thoughts towards the interior were still very modern for the age of the car and everything was easy to indentify. For a 2 door hatchback there is still quite a lot of room, i have a 10 month old child and have no problems getting her iun and out of her car seat in the back of the...

I bought my Vauxhall Astra 1.6 SXi from new in 2002 after driving a Corsa for 5 years and have never regretted it. I have two kids and there is plenty of room for the whole family in this car. Running costs are brilliant and I still have the same exhaust system which I think is remarkable. Tyres lasted up to 33000 miles. Insurance and servicing costs are cheap and petrol consumption is OK. The engine is smooth and road handling assured.

Richard,

I just read your review and fully agree with you on all of your points in regard to performance, looks and cost etc. I added quite a lot of Irmscher kit to mine and it looks great (Spoiler, Exhaust and Mesh Grill - these can be picked up at fairly reasonable prices as long as you do not just simply order from Vauxhall as they charge a premium!). The reason I am commenting though is I also have a rattle from the dash and Vauxhall have not been able to fix it in 6 visits! also my seats (although giving great support) creak and click - which is annoying...hopefully you will not experience this....
Written on: 22/06/2004
Well I've sorted the annoying rattle on the centre console, the dealer couldn't find it in 3 visits for me.
As I was fitting the Irmscher silver dash I noticed the heater ducts, (which are mounted in their own sub assembly which clips to the main dash) weren't seated fully into their clips on the old dash, I seated them fully in the new dash and problem solved! :)
Recently the throttle response has been a bit lumpy with partial throttle under load, I took it back to the dealer and they fitted a new EGR valve, this has transformed the car. The engine is now much smoother than it's ever been and it's started doing 5mpg extra.
I've had the passenger seat rattle a bit too, if you just adjust the back slightly it go's away.

I also own an Astra 1.6 SXI; I like the cars fuel economy and low insurance. Mines a 02 plate and I have also experienced the problems of squeaky seats and clunking form the rear brake compensator (must try some grease on it), but my main gripe is that it’s always had a clunk or knock noise when I change up the gears. Not always under load either, I've taken it to the dealer and they say its characteristics of the engine, (engine knock) - electronic throttle or something. I have done 30.000 miles since I have owned the car and the problem hasn't got worse but is annoying at times. You can hear the knock more with the driver’s window open, and wondered if anyone else has noticed this with their SXI. Also the brakes squeal just before I come to a stop. It sounds like a bus at times, the sound appears to be coming from the front disc brakes strangely enough and I’ve had the pads replaced to see if it made any difference. It was ok for a couple of weeks then stated again, the brakes work fine it’s just this annoying screech. The dealer told me it’s the classic Astra squeal! lack of asbestos in the linings nowadays apparently! If anyone else has had similar problems let me know, other than that I do actually like the car and did recently have an Astra mk4 Sport 1.6 as a hire car, that is basically identical to my SXI but without any of the problems I've mentioned here.

Does you car have drum brakes on the rear by any chance? If it does the squeak is a buildup of brake dust in the drums. If you remove them and clean all the dust out the squeak should go away :)

Iv got a 3dr astra sxi 03 plate and mine also makes a noise when I change up gear, its almost like a little rattle, as if metal was knocking in a bracket, i've been told the exact same rubbish, I love the drive and looks with the irmscher pack, but that sound. Its not on, i'm trying for compensation, I bet I wont get anything. Greg cheadle

Right! I've had my little Vauxhall Astra sweetheart for some months now and am still just as chuffed as I was in the beginning. Driving around Cornwall was an absolute dream. This little car sticks to the tarmac like mastic and snakes around bends like champion!

As I've only seen one other (a black one) since getting my car, I'm MOST curious to find out just how many of my particular model were actually made - 2-door, Astra 1.6 16V twin port 2004 model? Any ideas?
By the way, the slightly 'gritty' gearbox was just because this is the first car I've driven with a sports gearbox. It's absolutely fine and it's not 'gritty', it's just exact!
