written by Doyle76 on 14/12/2023

I would like to thank the staff at the Paisley High Street store and the manager from the Sauchiehall Street store in Glasgow for helping myself to purchase books for the children in the nursery's Christmas. I can't remember all the staffs names who helped me but the were amazing.

“incompetent staff”

★★☆☆☆

written by tedington on 18/07/2022

monday 18th July early morning upstairs near the post office i asked some individual, who did look interested, if the p.o had brown wrapping paper or not - he appeared to just back away disinterested then tell me that the item was downstairs so on my way down i just caught the vary item by accident on a lower shelf while still upstairs i did indicate this to him but still did not look at all concerned or appreciative. (He was tall caucasian, elderly and overweight - he should not be working). i have noticed that WH SMITH seemed to have many negative ratings and i can see why now. My contribution get some proper helpful staff! i reflect that years ago WH SMITH , in bath, was once a leading quality shop. i have given 2 stars purely because the item was in stock. i hope this is in order

“Do not order from here!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Sammiez on 02/09/2021

Do not trust this company! I wish I had read the reviews before ordering but I thought WHSmith would be fine to order from as its a well known company. I was completely wrong, I ordered school books and supplies due to be delivered yesterday as I'd pay for next day delivery. I haven't received my delivery, no tracking number in this day and age in spite of email confirmation its been "shipped" also there is no number to contact them on. I'm a disabled single parent so now I've lost the money, I can't afford to buy replacements so my children will have to go without.

“Poor customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JONNIA on 20/07/2021

After 2 weeks of waiting for my book order, i contacted the customer service for explanation. Shockingly a person, from the customer service re-claimed they will send my book between 1-2 weeks as they originally said. They added I can request to cancel the book order. I wrote to state that they clearly have a poor customer service skill if they failed to understand it was more than 2 weeks since i placed the order. And that their comment about cancellation meant they don't understand the non-monetary costs involved for someone who was waiting for the book to sit for registered exam. Next email i received was notification that they had cancelled my order. This shows they clearly lack customer service skills.

“Rude staff Altrincham branch ”

★★☆☆☆

written by Edwardlua on 01/11/2020

I drop in for a paper ,the odd card and perhaps the lottery a couple of times a week. I've no issues with the stock range. My issues are all about the lack of courtesy from mature members staff at Altrincham branch. This week as I waited to pay I noticed a message to ring bell for service and didn't feel I needed to as the assistant was shuffling stock just beside me. Eventually she came dashing around the counter and hastily placed the bell right in front of me and said YES PLEASE! These were the only words spoken other than 6.60. ......rude rude rude woman Get a grip WHS. People have a choice these days. Courtesy and good manners cost nothing. I now get paper from petrol station

“GP Ultra Alkaline batteries from WH Smith all dud”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Gandor on 07/02/2020

I purchased a new sealed and unopened 12 pack of GP Ultra Alkaline AA batteries from WH Smith store in Falmouth in January 2020. The expiry date printed on the base of each battery is 08 2024, so easily in date by over 4.5 years. I opened the pack on 7th Feb & inserted 2 into my digital camera which then displayed a warning notice on the rear screen saying that the batteries were exhausted, I then loaded another 2 and had the same result. This process continued for a further four attempts each time with the same warning until all the 'new' batteries had been loaded and declared dud. So just to ensure that my compact camera hadn't developed a fault I took 2 Duracell AA alkaline batteries from elsewhere and inserted them instead, the camera fired up and was ready for use immediately. So the entire pack of 12 GP Ultra AA Alkaline batteries were flat and or faulty, but either way were a complete waste of money. I expect far, far better quality products than this from a (once) respected high street retailer. If it wasn't for the fact that it would cost me more in time and travel to return them for a refund I'd take them back and raise merry hell, as it is I satisfy myself by hoping this review will warn other potential customers and divert trade away from WH Smith. This will eventually cost them far more in reputation and turnover than the amount they swindled off me for this worthless product.

“Web-Site Crashed After Paying For Order..”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Taylorjn414 on 09/05/2017

I wanted to order a book on-line at whsmith.co.uk, so that I could use a WHSMith Gift Card that I had received for my birthday. So, I used their web-site to order the book, and after the payment had been gone through, using the whole of my WHSmith Gift Card and the balance off my credit card, the whsmith.co.uk web-site duly crashed with an Internal Server Error (500). Since I assumed that my WHSmith Gift Card would be used-up and my credit card would still charged for something that I was not going to receive, I e-mailed whsmith and explained the situation; I have not had any response in over a week, and although I have sent another chase-up e-mail, I do not expect to receive any response from that either. Extremely poor customer service. They need to fix their web-site too. WHSmith used to be great 20 years ago, but I will order books/music off Amazon.co.uk in the future.

“What a shambles!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Camron148 on 10/02/2017

I booked a DHL shipment to the USA on line and my nearest agent was WH Smith in Hove. Not being familiar with the process I went to enquire but was told by the counter staff that it couldn't be done at that branch and I'd have to go to Staples. He then said I could, so I went home to collect my items. Returning an assistant said I could wrap them on a front counter which was far too small so I asked if I could do it at the DHL point at the back of the store. She said 'Yes' and I was just finishing when the manager came demanding to know 'What is making that noise?' - it was in fact my parcel tape. She then aggressively told me that I had to unwrap my parcel because I had to be seen to wrap it. By this time I'd had enough, picked up my things and left. I went to Staples who couldn't have been more helpful. DHL parcel to send? Avoid WHS - the staff haven't any training and the attitude of the manager was appalling.

“Worst shop on the highstreet”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Hollandsg168 on 10/01/2017

Consistently poor customer service - I am a commuter who works all over the country. I often drop into the shops to buy a paper or even a magazine to keep myself occupied during longer journeys. I would definitely not recommend this company due to poor staff attitudes and ridiculously high prices. I have visited a number of stores and have now decided to take my custom elsewhere.

“Truly awful company”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 107Bowen on 03/01/2017

I'm taken aback at how poor this company is, but more so for it's total lack of respect for its customers. I ordered a book from WHSmith online a month ago costing £38. It still hasn't arrived, despite informing their customer services twice by email. As for getting through by telephone - so far it's been impossible. There's the added frustration of an inane recorded message repeating the same information every few seconds, the gist of which is not much better than if it said 'sod off we can't be bothered'. I wonder if WHSmith are reading any of these extremely negative reviews, and is so whether they give a damn.

“DO NOT PURCHASE ONLINE FROM THIS COMPANY”

★☆☆☆☆

written by poppey on 26/09/2016

Having placed an order online from W H Smith for a book, and being charged £2.99 for the privilege, I waited to be advised of a despatch date. Nothing! I emailed W H Smith 'twice'. Nothing! I telephoned W H Smith 'twice'. Permanent music with a message telling me I would be answered quickly. Nothing! It is not difficult to see why W H Smith is failing. Indeed, if I had known they were this bad, I would never have placed an order with them online. Customer service? None! To have customer service, you really have to respond to customers. W H Smith do not. Finally, I have given W H Smith one star for value for money. Why? You have to receive the goods to make any comment. I haven't. Take my advice; avoid this company; they just DO NOT WORK.

Megsblyth's Response to poppey's Review

I have had the same problem. Ordered book to be delivered to store, had email to say despatched 8 days ago but still not arrived. Went into store today but because I ordered online from home they can't track it and don't know when it will arrive! Emailed customer services but like you have not had a response - unbelievable!!

“Ridiculously Expensive”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JohnScoot99 on 30/07/2016

I ran out of printer ink and needed an urgent replacement - - the only place I could find with one in stock was W H Smiths Tavistock. Smith's online price for an HP 78 cartridge is £37.79 (£34.40 direct from HP, £29.00 Amazon) a bit expensive i thought but needs must. The store charged me £50.99!! I was desperate so i paid - but I'll never use W H Smiths again.

“Rip of price policy”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ariellel306 on 13/05/2016

I Have walked out of several W H Smith stores now & refuse to shop in them due to their pricing of cigarettes, Yea i know smoking is bad for you etc etc ... but that is no excuse for a shop to charge up to £4 a packet more than other shops who use the same wholesalers. If they can get away with this on one product I can only assume they do it with others so I simply refuse to use their shops.

“Expensive and useless”

★☆☆☆☆

written by NayeliMacLeod226 on 13/02/2016

The price of printer paper is outrageous! £6.99 for 500 sheets Vs £3.99 in sainsburys who aren't even a specialist paper retailer. Pants. Also wanted the latest Brent Weeks book a while back for teenage son. The staff had never heard of him and had to ask how to spell his name to look it up on google! Pretty tragic as he is a best selling teenage fiction writer. Never using WH smith again - it's a shame because they used to be great but have seriously fallen behind the times. The staff seem to think they are doing you an enormous favour by dealing with you. Finally 15p for a large carrier bag is taking the micky!

“Click & Fight to collect at Forest Hill”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Guest663 on 21/12/2015

On 8th December I ordered a DvD for the website to collect at their Forest Hill, South London store. I received confirmation of the order and that it had been dispatched and would be at the store within 2-3 days on the same day; over a week later having heard nothing more I went to the store and they confirmed that it had been received 3 days earlier but they couldn't find it so they reordered it. Last Friday I received confirmation that it had been delivered and all seemed to be going smoothly this time until I got to the store. The woman I spoke to,WITHOUT MOVING FROM THE SPOT SHE STOOD ON, told me first that it hadn't been delivered, then when I showed the delivery email she said the first one has turned up and I had already collected it and when I insisted that I hadn't she reached behind herself, picked up an envelope, pulled out my DvD and handed it over. What was going through her head I really can't imagine but WH Smith really need to look at bewildering level of incompetence displayed by some their staff. And another thing. I bought a simple Christmas card with a tiny bow on it while I was there and it was £3.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Worst online order service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Witchpig on 13/11/2015

This is the second time I have used WHSmith online order service but I shall not be giving them another chance. I thought it was a poor service last time, and I am still of the same opinion. I ordered 2 books on 4th November to be delivered to my local store. Received an email to say they had left WHSmith warehouse at 00:55 on 7th November, (to be collected 2-3 days later, which I think is not very impressive anyway) but they are still not there, 7 days later. My son and I wanted these two books to do some studying before Monday 16th November but it looks like that is not going to be possible. Have been into store twice so far. Getting seriously hacked off. Will not be ordering/purchasing ANY Christmas items from them this year, as I normally do. They need to up their game. Incidentally, money has been debited from my bank account.

“WHSmith does not care about you.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 12/08/2015

I worked in the St Albans Rail branch for three and a half years from January 2012 to June 2015. For most of my time I was treated with disrespect by management and customers. My promised promotion to supervisor never happened. The pay was awful and conditions were poor. I shall explain everything in more detail. Disrespect- Now rude customers are a unfortunate and unnecessary part of the job and while it would be good for me to get it off my chest, it has nothing to do with the company and therefore will not form part of my review. But management? Well. The current manager was overbearing to me and the rest of the staff. Any small thing we did wrong was routinely criticised by her. I received daily notes which served as complaints from her. Not once did she praise me for something I did right. I felt like I was unfairly targeted as I was the most senior sales assistant at the time. I was told that I was a distraction to staff when I said hello. I told her that I was suffering with severe depression, but she only made it worse. The company does not care about its sales assistants. You were often threatened with the sack if you didn't hit targets for selling chocolate. The managing director of WHSmith travel. He frequently visited the store. He never says hello to staff except for the manager. He told me more than once that he was happy with the store presentation only to turn his back and call the regional manager to complain about the store presentation. Lack of progression- On several occasions I was told by my first manager that a promotion to supervisor was mine and he told the current manager that I was to be promoted. I have proof that this promise was made. I never became supervisor. I was told by the current manager that a supervisor was not needed. This company likes to say how they often train people up. This is simply not the case. They have no training structure. New staff are given terrible training, it was more about hitting targets than customer service. Pay- Pay was hardly above minimum wage. For the work we put in I would expect a competitive wage. This company works its employees to the ground, they expect them to be ready for work at any time, so good pay would be our reward, right? No. Not at all. It's no wonder staff at my store rarely lasted a year. Conditions- The store is small as it is in St Albans station. The floors are disgusting. The cleaning schedule was hardly enforced and the stock room is a health and safety nightmare. Dusty, old stock on the floor, overflowing with stock that can't go out and absolutely no room to move. We were expected to deal with it. Stock fell on top of me on more than one occasion. I returned to the store recently and found it in a horrific state. Stock on the floor, rubbish not cleaned up. One of the drinks fridges hadn't worked for the last three months of my time there despite my telling the manager that it needed to be sorted. A truly terrible company that does not deserve your custom. Overpriced, disrespectful management from manager to managing director, boring work, poor pay and hell on earth. Do not work for WHSmith. They won't treat you right.

“Rude Staff At Alton Hampshire”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Daz1972p on 04/06/2015

I went to the Alton store to collect a magazine as I do quite often, the item was £5.25 and I went to the till with a £10 note and the od 25p in change so I could get a five pound in change. There was no one at the tills and after a few minutes an abrupt woman came over and scourned 'you are suppose to use the self service till' (did not know they had them), she then snatched the mag from my hand and scanned it on the machine and said put your money in there, I was just about to ask if I should put the change in first or the note and she made a big huff, snatched the note from my hand and shoved it in the machine which then shot out a load of change, I explained I had the odd money to get a note as changed and she snapped 'the machine does not do that' and walked off. Wrote to customer services who replied it was a training issue and would be addressed, no apology or anything. Will shop else where in future.
