I would rate the Ford Escort XR3i 0 out of ten. They are slow, fat, cumbersome cars. They have no stlye, bad to drive and look disgraceful. I used own a red K-reg XR3i a few years back. I spent thousands of pounds tuning it but still found it at speeds under 139 mph. Only racer wannabe's drive them. Real racers laugh at the sight of a XR3i.

even excrement has good points, it fertilizes the soil by releasing nutrients so plants can feed...
u bviously have no intention of being helpful to people that are considering purchasing an RS or an XR3i or indeed, even a plain old escort... u are no less than intent on sabotaging the escorts reputation, and yes, it does have one.
at the time of its release it was one the most sought after cars of its time, where were u at this time? playin with matchbox toys?
agreed, the car has its bad points, as any car, yet on the other hand, it has alot of good things too, i drove an L reg bmw 316i for a month, slow and sluggish and too bouncy, so much so that doin 80 on the motorway and goin over a hump would sway the car, but sayin that, its a smooth ride and quiet...
the xr3i i have, on the other hand, is far quicker, granted, its not as smooth, but it wasnt made for aeroplane type travel, it was meant to be a rugged sporty 1.6 engine, and THAT it was and hell, still is.
have u not sat back and wondered why E reg escorts XR3i and RST alike are worth thousands when other VW's and the sort of the same reg wouldnt fetch half that amount? or did u totally let that slip ur extremely biased mind

its not a boy racers car, its a car thats so cheap to maintain and run in relation to its performance, that even little boys who want to race can afford it... THATS what it is

i think the XR3i is really good, i get about 90 miles on a £10 tank of fuel, parts are cheap.. but bodywork is prone to corrosion, ALWAYS check for body and chassis corrosion, ESPECIALLY in areas not immediately visible such as sills, seat belt mountings and areas 30cm diametre of it, make sure the car electrics are fine, and when u turn the ignition to turn the car on, lift the bonnet to see for any sparks which could indicate short circuit somewhere, and electrics can be expensive to sort out... other than that, parts for the car can be easily found at scrap yards, and some parts are cheap to buy new from ford dealerships

'Real racers'?

Glad you have spent the time looking through reviews only to give the XR3i 0/10!

Sorry, but anyone can go out and spend £3-5k on an imported Impreza, Civic or Prelude...but...I think you'll find an XR3i is still rarer!

Lets face it, the XR3i was an 80's car! It was never meant to be compared to cars produced 20 years later...If that were the case, then there's not much hope left for our 'Pall'...

Oh, and PS, called himself 'Pall', probably the only time he will be...'nuf said me thinks!

I Feel he has never owned a XR !! I Am a veteran of over 30 "hot hatch" Cars in the past 12 years, started off with a xr2 and went through a whole range of cars (XR3I,MK3,4,5,RS TURBO S1,S2,FIESTA RST,1800,XR2I,BMW 318IS,325I,NISSAN SUNNY GTIR,SKYLINE X2,PUG 205 1.6,1.9,306 XSI,GTI6,MG MAESTRO,MG TURBO,ROVER 420 TURBO,SIERRA COSWORTH 2WD,TO NAME BUT A FEW)and i have come back to a 1992 xr31 mk4 in gleaming black- its the best car for the cash out there!!! I paid £775 for mine which is a lot but its a genuine 1 owner from new example with a mere 46k on the clock and 13 stamps in the book from various ford dealers.
I can go from London to Reading Berkshire on less than a tenners worth of liquid gold! servicing is cheap to say the least and it still turns heads to this day.
Anyone who is considering getting a '3i i'd say opt for as late as you can find them with as many toys as possible and you wont go far wrong.

Gazeratti talks out his rear if he thinks the most popular cars out there are bad ie all Escorts I have an rs cosworth and I cant fault it never lost out 2 a jap effort. xr3i what a cheap bargin car the best thing is if you need parts you can always get them (try german cars prices or jap) if you want boy racer stuff go 4 the rs turbo they do over 130mph. so what does Gazeratti drive i wonder ? @ a guess a rover hahahaha

Clearly a lot of peepz in this review hav not owned an XR3i b4 and a word of advice, U NEED TO OWN ONE FIRST!! I managed to buy one a few weeks ago in mint condition for £400 and it thrases BMW 325i's, I don't know how anybody can say that this car doesn't have enough performance, with a 0-60 speed of 8.7 seconds standard out of a 1.6i you can't complain, if u want something faster then your an idiot that needs to get off our roads (they're 4 havin fun of course but why would you need more than 120mph???) if u want more power or speed then buy an Aston Martin, Ferrari or a TVR and stop calling a piece of History

i bet u own a punto now, dont u? as xr3i boy rightly said, when these cars came out the outsold any other hot hatch in the same class by miles, in fact at one point the xr3i was outselling any other model of escort. what other manufacturer can say their hot hatch was their best selling car. in its day it was the car for kids to have, any other car in the same class just wasnt as good, full stop. ive owned a couple of these before, and a cabriolet which has the same engine, and had plenty of fun caning novas, clios, etc. even today they still do the business against a saxo vtr, for instance. your talking about the mk5 escort xr3i which ive never driven so i cant comment on it, but whatever you do dont knock the mk4.

Ive owned and driven a H reg XR3i for many years now and im no boy racer! These cars are cheap to run have little problems and if they do are incredibly cheap to repair. There is no problem with the XR3i and the EFI makes the car quick, powerful and fast without eating too much petrol. It may not be the smoothest car but it handles well and wot top speed do you expect from a 1.6!?!! Mine can do over 130mph so I think thats not bad at all! They turn heads and look smart and sporty and many people love these cars.

You are a truly childish person.
The Ford Escort XR3i, whilst it's no M3 beater, is a perfectly acceptable car with more than enough performance for anyone's needs. I can clerly tell that you don't own an XR3i by the way you've written your review. On top of the highly competant and popular hatch the Escort, the Escort offers relatively cheap fun for people who can't afford to run a full blown super saloon day in and day out. Attempting to give this car 0 out of 10 is completely unacceptable as it deserves to be recognized as a perfectly fine, if flawed, hatch.
