The Complete Recordings was the first official collection of all Johnson's songs. Johnson along with Leadbelly is the god of the blues. His music is profound and often disturbing and like Leadbelly it reflects the hardships of black men in the US growing up against the background of slavery and facing the Great Depression and the sub cultures in which they lived and often died.
RJ died aged 27, poisoned, possibly by a jealous husband, and he is responsible for the greatest of all the blues myths. While waiting at a crossroads at midnight he struck a deal with the Devil to exchange his soul for the power to play the guitar so powerfully that it would strike awe in the hearts of men and bewitch women.
Listen to this and find out if you agree.
