There is one little technical flaw, but overall, the Orange SPV is a perfect mobile phone.
It is a PC in your pocket with a phone built in.
Enjoy, but be prepared to spend time installing applications and making it your own personal computer.

I'm posting an additional comment on this Orange SPV mobile phone. I have bought a new SD/MMC of 128MB beause the default one that comes with purchane is 8MB too little for any thing. When i have incerted this i was expecting the mobile to recognise automatically because it has microsoft windows. To my surprise it did't recognise the sim, i have tried all the options in the Active sync software that comes with it. This Orange SPV mobile phone is good if you want a slow small screen palm top with a phone built in. If you do a lot of calling or texting then forget it. The phone has cut me off calls loads of times, crashed, slowed down enough to make it unusable and none of your mates have got a charger. The text function is useless. The phone has a very small dictionary and seems to not remember words. If you are not a computer nerd who has to download stuff using addsync then get the nokia 6230. The... (read more)

This Orange SPV mobile phone is the worst phone on the market, I have been a mobile phone owner/user since 1987 from the big transmobiles to the present day following the advances in technology and advances size reduction until this phone. The technological advancements in quality of reception, clarity of voice, battery life and features.

This Orange SPV phone sounded great in the literature and promotional videos and materials from Orange. However, once I had opened the box and turned it on I was VERY disappointed.
The phone is un-attractive and bulky. It takes 2 presses of the power button to turn on, and then you have to wait up to a minute for WIndows to load, then it's hit and miss that you'll get the PIN screen to go any further.
Another let down is the call qaulity, the ear piece is not very loud and the ring tone...

Wasted a day of my busy life on the phone to Orange tech support but they still do not know why the Orange SPV does not sync with a PC. The whole point of a smartphone is to have a very mobile office, this does nothing of the sort yet. Perhaps this will be fixd one day but the product was 6 weeks late due to field testing and still does not work out of the box. Anti-virus software kills it dead in the cradle and Orange's final shot at fixing the sync errors was to leave A.V. turned off all... (read more)

Word of advice to anyone whose phone lags at times, you can download a lot of free software and tweaks from the net. Get your smartphone unlocked and you can do a whole load of things!!!! Nokia phones are the biggest waste of money. My Nokia cell recently had so many problems, such as the unlock button would not respond, and sometimes the sound for the phone would be cut off until the recharger was plugged in for a second(the phone being fully charged). I got the phone for a deal since i signed a contract with cingular. Now there telling me i have to buy a new one because its "broken beyond repair". I asked how much a new one would cost and they told me 180.00 dollars!!! i laughed an said, "yea right, idiot!" So now im stuck with a half-ass phone and a contract that if i breach i will have to pay 200 dollars. Ironic how the crud service matches the crud phones! NOKIA SUCKS!

To the person regarding the ringtones, you can record your own ringtones from CD. You can use activesinc to import a .wav format tune and use it for a ringtone.
As for the person saying you couldn't find the thing for changing over your Sim card details. Go to SIM Manager. you can transfer all your details from your sim card to your phone. Hope this helps.

I agree with a lot of users to say that the spv is poor! We have been testing the SPV as a business phone and are not impressed. Things I noticed: Before the upgrade: the back light would come on at the touch of of any button, the battery life was poor. After the upgrade: back light problem resolved but was finding that I was answering incoming calls just by trying to take it out of it's case. The internet explorer would crash when trying to cancel a connection (take out the battery), signal strength was very weak in places where it was stronger with other models. Switching network providers was a nightmare (tried it in the UK, Ireland & Switzerland). In the UK I was receiving a SIM manager error asking me to turn off the radio etc (radio wasn't even on --- take out the battery). Ireland was poor and found that some calls were being terminated which was depressing. On the features front, the keys are small and it's not easy when trying to compose any type of message. The display is very good and navigation is easy (just takes a bit of getting used to). The sound and playback from the media player were very jumpy and having the camera is a waste of time. I won't go much into the media side of things because I feel these are gadets that kids love to have. The fact that you get a case for the phone but you have to carry the camera in one of your pockets...hhmmm. On the calendar and tasks side of things, I found the SPV very good. Syncronising between outlook and the SPV is fast and reliable and does the job very well and that's about it. Pity about the applications side of things and I'm not prepared to hack the phone to get it the way I want it. All in all, I still don't want it. If you going to use it as a business phone, it's unreliable, unstable and requires upgrades. The keys are too small and it's not easy to move quickly around the keypad (the list goes on). But if you like a colouful display, taking photos (good lighting required) and do not need it as a business phone, it's probably a good buy. The price is fair. The SPV is still more on the mobile phone side of things than a pda but in saying that I had most problems trying to use it as a mobile phone. But then again, that's my opinion, other users say it's cool etc. I think not. Time to have a look at the P800.

I found out how to add your own sounds. Go to the Club Smartphone site at Mictrosoft and take a look:
http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/smartphone/club/support/support_question.asp?cid=2&tid=1&qid=1
or follow these steps:
1. Connect the Smartphone to your desktop computer by using a USB connection.
2. On your desktop computer, copy the sound file you want. The file format must be .wav or .mid.
3. In ActiveSync on your desktop computer, click Explore , double-click My Smartphone , double-click IPSM , double-click Application Data , double-click Sounds , and then paste the sound file into the Sounds folder.
Good luck!

Hi,

All you need is a PCM .wav file. Then you can use anything as a ringtone (without have to pay a premium rate phonecall - or trawl the web). Perhaps record your mate saying "pick up the phone", and associate that "ringtone" with his number - an away you go - everything he rings, you he his dullset tones telling you to answer.
Your ringtones are only limited by your imagination (and access to a PC, if you want to edit them up)
Check out http://www.modaco.com/smartphone/ for the latest information on how to personalise your SPV. (PS. this website is nothing to do with me - I've just found it useful)

Very accurate

Well I was pretty well impressed !! Took a couple of days to learn all the features and how to use them unlike the other two reviewers! They said the ring tones was poor and the sound not loud THEN CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS DUHH!. Once you have set up active sync which was I must say easier to download from microsft than the disc, you can open up your phone file and drag and drop .wav or .midi files direct onto your phone WOW hifi sound or what, I have a 15 sec clip from star wars film in the bar... WHERE DID U GET THIS FONE FOR £50?!?!?!
Written on: 16/12/2002
I quite agree, Orange's lowest price is £99.99 on an expensive price plan. I'm very interested to know where you got this for £50 because I had 2 of these stolen 2 weeks ago!!

Hello reply to your message as regards phone for £50 it's no big secret. I upgraded my orange phone Nokia 7110 as I was out of 12 month contract on everyday 50 for FREE (NO UPGRADE FEE) The upgrade is £99 through their system but on their paperwork they have a base line of £50 but they don't tell you that, so you ask them a few questions about the phone sounding quite unsure whether you should go for it or not. Then considering that they are really trying to push this phone tell them you would really like one and you have been a loyal cutomer for ? long and that all my friends was asking me to show me the phone once I had got it, Hey presto £50 phone, then bought an upgrade pack for £17 from them. Not realising my partner had just bought one for a £5 THEN SOLD MY OLD PHONE AS PAY AS U GO FOR £50 so you could say it cost my £17.63 to be precise. Any questions or you would like to share tips email mlmeurope@eezenet.com

I haven't bought mine yet but you can get £50 off when you exchange your old phone with car Phone Warehouse, making it £49.99, which is what I'm intending to do.

Cough...mine was free with OVP(Orange Value Plan)200. www.mobileshop.com.

With alot of these price plans you pay it back in your monthly payments. I not sure if you can still get Orange Everyday 50 which I am on, you get 50 free mins every evening to landlines and then its 1p per min off peak for £15 a month. I also through the day Orange charge about 35p but I can dial off to the landline network with an 0800 number which is free on Orange and it only costs me 5.3p per min peak rate ! You can email me on mlmeurope@eezenet.com

I've just got my SPV, not as cheap as you did but I'm still v happy with it - a top phone. One point, when trying to load .wav files to the directory mentioned in the manual with the active synch explorer, I don't appear to have the ..\IPSM\APPLICATION DATA\SOUNDS folder? I've tried dragging .wavs into the windows folder with the other sound files, but no joy when trying to use them as ringtones? Could you give a quick pointer on how you got your Star Wars one to work?
Written on: 06/01/2003
I found that you have to create the sounds folder yourself, calling it 'sounds' and then copy the sound files into there.
Anyone know any good sites for music wav files?
Written on: 08/01/2003
Ringtone heaven !! First you need to set up Active Sync 3.6 once loaded plug in your phone an open your phone folders and find the sounds folder if not got one the create one but, I wont got into to detail because you can log onto www.microsoft.com/mobile/smartphone/default.asp and you will be able to find out and print off the directions on how to do it.
Remember the .wav file can be quite big upto 1.5mb for the fancy ones so only put on or two on your phone at the same time otherwise you will slow down your phone !! You can always create a new folder on your desktop and save your .wav files there until you want to swap them, or you can get a bigger SD CARD the cheapest on I have seen is a 256 MB SD card for less than £100 including shipping, log on to www.pricegrabber.com search sd cards and it will list all suppliers and prices. Last note .wav files you can either copy cd music and convert through your burner software any .wav file ? Or you can search your hard drive with the search facility for .wav file beleive me their is loads of stuff or for movies,tv, theme tunes viist www.wavecentral.com See you soon !!!!! ;-}

Top advice. Thanx for pointing me in the right direction. My phone is now wav-tastic! By the way, I've yet to track down a decent case to protect the big screen. Any suggestions?
Written on: 11/01/2003
Hi Dicky it's a whole New .Wav World Mate. When you purchase the phone you should have got a leather case for it, for your belt. Keeps it protected but you have to remove the case to use the phone?? Like a cowboy going for his gun lol !!
Hey if you have any smart .wav files email me them so I can try them and visa versa..
mlmeurope@eezenet.com snd me your .wav files B-)

If you go to http://www.ebuyer.com you will find 512mb SD cards. However I am not sure whether the phone supports larger than 256mb. According to Microsoft, the largest is 256mb but that was written in May last year and may not be completely accurate.
If anyone is wanting to test a beta application I am writing that will alow you to easily customise your home screen/profiles sounds, and backgrounds from your PC then email me (spv.configurator@dsl.pipex.net) and I will send you a copy. It should be ready for testing in about two - three weeks.

Hi just to comment on your last message about a Beta program. With my SPV SD card ther is a program on their called IA Album which will do all the functions you mention ie backgrounds, pictures etc it also allows you to view, spin zoom any pictures you take by the camera or copied from desktop to anywhere on your SPV using active sync. IA Album will search you phone for all pic automatically. It is only a trial program so when it finishes you can purchase it. Great for customising your background and MMS messages. By the way will anyone send me any great .wav file to mlmeurope@eezenet.com and i will send you what i have too . ;-)

I've had the SPV a few days now and in general I'm really pleased with it. I've added a 128 MB SD card which has allowed me to store 3 albums worth of MP3's and has room left for numerous pictures. (The phone comes with an 8MB card which is only really useful for storing photo's). The sound quality isn't bad at all through the supplied hands-free headphones (although I didn't find them the snuggest fit - probably my ears). The look and feel of the phone is excellent, although the keypad... (read more)

How much battery life / talk time / standby time do you actually get?
...shame there's no in-car charger for it.
..and a case that allows you to use the phone whilst the phone is in the case.

hey y'all,
The SPV seems to have many mixed reviews, but I'm still going to have to get one, thats if I can get my hands on one !! Just a quick question though, where abouts did you buy your 128mb sd card??? I've got a Siemens SL45 which uses a 32MB MMC card but I dont know where to purchase one for when I get my SPV???
Cheers, CW

Got the SD Card from camera shop on London Bridge. Jessops sell them as well but were a little pricy. Battery seems to last two days if the useage is low. If I use it alot (calls, GPRS, games) I can only get a day out of it.
Figured out Hotmail now - GPRS seems to have settled down to.
Still really happy with the phone.

hi there.. jus wonderin how u managed to figure out hotmail as i'd really like to be able to access it on the move using my spv.. thanx

Hey, with the MP3 player on the SPV, Windows Media Player; does it play Playlist files too like the full version of Media Player?
Written on: 06/07/2003
To access hotmail....you need to use the mobile version of the site. It might be this one http://mobile.msn.com/Default.aspx or it might be http://www.hotmail.com/mobile I cant remember, but it is possible.

The idea of the SPV is certainly spot on. It is the much needed link between PDA's and mobile phones, and the features are fantastic- at last, a phone that will sync with a pc! The games are great- nice bright colours and good sound. Having the sd card is also a great idea- apparently you can get different sizes of these- it comes with an 8mb card. I found that the ringtones are a little quiet, but apparently you can use mp3s as ring tones- now THAT is an awesome idea! The phone comes with... (read more)

You seemed to have had the same problems as myself.
The phone is a real let down in certain areas - the battery is very poor and I still might exchange mine for a 7650. It's a real shame - a product with such potential being let down by a poor battery, a naff marketing strategy and seemingly poor production.
What's worse...there's no accessories available for it yet. A longer-life battery would be good.
But, if you wanted this phone as a PDA alternative and you were relying upon it for business purposes - e.g., out on the road - there's no in-car charger available, battery life is no where near enough and the software is somewhat unstable.
I have connected to the internet etc...the problem is that the phones should have been pre-configured pre-sale for internet access and GPRS.
It's best to configure it manually (!). These are the setting you need:

I have an SPV and have had no problems with it, Internet connection worked first time. He's right about the key pad though, very uncomfortable.
Perhaps the reviewer wanted a mouse and keyboard, as obviously it has to be different from windows. I am very impressed with this phone. I had bluetooth for a year on my T39 and didn't miss it, I doubt I'll miss it on this one.
Messenger, IE, Mediaplayer, Outlook, Contacts... if you're not sure get a Nokia!
Written on: 06/12/2002
I also connected my SPV instantly after one call to Orange because whoever registered the phone "forgot" to switch on GPRS, once that was done, no problems. I agree the keypad is a bit small and other than that, some windows explorer type programme built in would have been nice and more detailed contact searches too.
Written on: 13/12/2002
The comment regarding the keypad is true - it is a tad small, but if you've been used to having an 8310 or something similar in size, then you'll soon get used to it. The screen is excellent, and navigation is very easy once you learn the shortcuts - for example, the reviewer says you can't get to contacts other than on the a d and g etc - well, the searching in contacts works the same was at T9 predictive text input - enter 328 and it will go to DAVe for example. My GPRS worked straight out of the box, but I only got it last a week ago so maybe they've fixed it since the early models.
Written on: 04/07/2003
The authors comment about searching for names in the contacts list is not correct. It works perfectly....as long as you read the manual and realise that it works in T9 mode! For example, to search for Fiona, you would click 3 then 4. Dooh!
<br>I have had it for 3 weeks, no problems at all. The keys are small, but given that I dont use SMS that much..it isnt a problem....everything else is menu driven.
Written on: 24/11/2002 by DBrook.
Whilst the Orange SPV phone is feature-rich when it comes to multimedia, I think the feature aspect has totally taken over the phone and the basic features that are needed in a mobile phone are perhaps lost.
The keypad is quite small - it's too easy to catch the wrong key (very annoying when writing an SMS). The navi-buttons are also clumsy. When selecting to move left or right, the button is so small that you end up moving down too.
The menu system is easy to follow and configurable -...

This is the telephone I have been waiting for.
Internet access useless forget it
but to have 1400 contacts each with several phone numbers accessable and synchronised to my desktop is great.
Small keyboard - what do you expect
Battery life - carry a spare battery
Slow to nav with menus - liveable - will get better (it is a function of memory and processor size.
Dont care about the ringtones as long as I can hear it when it is ringing.
Quality of photos - who cares
I just sold my new 7610 to a friend in order to be able to buy the spv

Kgemes's Response to stephen delaney's Review
Written on: 11/04/2004
This review is basically correct. The SPV is an unmitigated disaster, compounded by the fact that Orange technicians themselves have little idea about how to use its features. The short-life battery problem can be solved by asking Orange for a new battery. My first battery lost its charge in half a day. My current battery lasts for 2-3 days.
