However I love the car to bits and wouldn't get rid of it for the world, it attempted to break into a while ago, still awaiting repair for when I get some money. (read more)

The Fiat Punto 1.4 GT Turbo is a good car, it is fast 0-60 standard is about 7.4sec and will pass its claimed topspeed of 127mph very easily. You can easily start to bring its 0-60 time down with a few mods. Its faster than a similar spec r5 turbo. But the r5 turbo does respond more to engine tweaks than the punto gt. The toyota starlet gt or galanza is quicker than the punto gt and uses a 1.3 turbo engine developing 133bhp. Its a lot lighter than the punto gt 0-60 is 6.8secs standerd and... (read more)

Your chatting rubbish, i have a Civic Type R and no way a Punto GT Turbo can beat it. Type R would have it any day.
My Type R goes over 150mph which i doubt a punto can do.
Also at take off 0-60 for type r is alot quicker than the punto
Written on: 26/07/2005
hold on fiat punto gt1 1.4 8v turbo 135bhp
0-60: 7.4secs topspeed 128mph
honda civic type r 2.0 16v 197bhp
0-60: 6.7secs topspeed 143mph

these are taken from fiats punto gt car specs and evo magazine, whatcar mag and parkers.now every body knows cars can do over the topspeed so not doubting ur civic type r cant do 150mph.the punto gt can do 140mph 12mph of paper spec.

fiat punto gt3 limited 1.4 8v turbo 152bhp
0-60: 6.7secs topspeed 135mph

now fink about it ur civic type r is spose to be 7nth hundreth of a sec faster than a punto gt3 to 60mph when it has 66bhp more than the gt 1.so the civic is not evan gona be 1 second infront.against a punto gt3 limited the 0-60 is exactly the same as a type r.and the gt3 will beat it all the way up to 120mph.i never said a punto was gt was faster than a civic type r top end.but u obviously aint driven a punto gt.remember its a 1.4 and you have almost 70bhp more on the gt1.and gt3 limited only has 152bhp and a civic type r cant beat that until top end speed. a 197bhp punto gt would make any civic type r look very stupid.and there are other smaller engine jap cars that a type r canot beat. my opinion i dont rate civic type rs.well the new ones.the civic type r in the previous shape is better as its a smaller engine and has near enough same power and is faster.
Written on: 26/07/2005
Civic Type R would easily beat the punto as the magazine details are usually slower than it really is.
The 0-60 is about 6 seconds.
Type r would easily beat your Punto. As tenths of seconds is alot when racing.
The fact is you have problay raced some one who dont no what there doing, or you aint raced one at all.
I have beaten a Punto 1.4 gt turbo was a T-reg, so unless your running 180bhp you aint going to be beating a type r at take off.
Written on: 28/07/2005
no civic stock type r does 0-60 in 6 secs. its 6.7 a type r is not 8 hundreths of a second faster than a focus rs.its 0-60 is the same as a seat leon cupra r. no naturally aspirated 2.0 engine is doing 0-60 in 6 secs. i have a nissan pulsar and that has just over 360bhp and in standerd that does 0-60 in 5.7secs and would destroy any stock type r.tell me what magazine you got that spec from and page no. i can easily tell u a few.the punto gt limited is a t reg model and is a limited edition because it has a biger turbo manifold is different and bigger intercooler.has more torque than a punto gt1 2 and 3.you obviously dont no anyfing about punto gts? its not all about the amount of bhp a car has.all about torque with the punto gt limited.civic type r!!! no chance
Written on: 29/07/2005
If u got over 360bhp in your pulsa how come you only getting 0-60 in 5.7.
I have got a 343bhp Bmw M3 2004, i does 0-60 just under 5 seconds. The M3 weighs alot more than a Pulsa so it should go alot faster than an M3.
Think you got somthing wrong with your car if you only get o-60 5.7
Written on: 01/08/2005
you have not read my comment correct. i said a standard nissan pulsar does 0-60 in 5.7secs standard meaning its standard 220bhp mine does it in about 4.5secs.my car is perfectly fine.

I have only just seen the email about your comment. Firstly, the Punto GT is gone. I sold it as Pulsar is more reliable. Every car is different, and you can have two identically tuned cars but one may drive completely different to the other. As for the 1 your friend had?? Well, I can't comment on it. I am talking about experience here, not just on paper. I have had cars like the Punto GT that have shamed more so-called faster cars, like the 2.0 Civic type R. The thing is, people get upset when they have a car which they paid a lot of cash for, and something that's worth a fraction of there car is quicker. Where a car can shame another up to 60mph or 80mph, the other car can shame it from 60mph or 80mph. The Nissan Pulsar - I no longer own that, as I have got an Audi S3 now, but even the Nissan being as powerful as it was, there were still other cars that could beat it with no problems. It's down to the driver as well as the car. My mate has just bought the new Honda Integra type R, and he made a Focus ST 2.5 driver look very stupid. He even raced a Evo 8, and that driver said "that's the best race" he's ever had so far, and his Evo has a lot more torque and power than the Integra. We could all be here all day saying this car can't beat that car, but the fact is, it boils down to experience. I've done it, others may not have, so whatever you see happen that's what you think and know. So like on here, you write a review or make comments. My A3 is standard at the moment, but still quite quick. But don't think because of how much torque or power you have your car is untouchable.

Just bought a Punto GT Turbo 1995 with 60 k on the clock. I got it farely cheap due to a few problems so if anyone can help that would be sound. Main problem being selecting 3rd gear,it makes a crunching noise like the clutch isnt fully in, also oil leaking from around the intercooler pipe, probley just needs tightening. And when you give it some revs the engine jumps a little, engine mount? easy to change? other than that this car is a dream, its a pocket rocket. Oh and one more thing, what is the gauge next to the psi 1 saying 1.6 bar,its got an oil can on, is it oil pressure, or the amount thats going through the turbo? what should it be on? any info will be mint. cheers.Joe
Written on: 10/06/2004
Info for Jo. The gauge next to the turbo gauge is the oil pressure gauge. When idling this should sit between half way and full but when accelerating or driving normally the pressure should be peak as this is keeping the turbo going. Keep an eye on it but as long as its up there you can't go wrong. Punto GTs are rapid and rule, good luck Saxos!

Comment for SteveJames:

Sounds like a couple of things could be wrong. Get your MAF (Mass Air Flow Meter) checked, make sure all your hoses are connected properly and that your dump valve (diverter valve) isn't leaking. Possibly also check the wastegate actuator valve isn't knackered.
All could be causing hesitations.

I'm not a lover of Fiats in general but do admit they did something reasonable with the Punto GT and Coupe Turbo, purely because they bolted on a turbocharger. Be cautious in your Punto GTs though thinking they'll beat all small hatchbacks off the lights... A remapped Ibiza Cupra (Turbo) will smoke you !! ;)
Written on: 20/02/2005
An Ibiza turbo has 180bhp as standard, a punto gt has 130bhp standard or slightly more on the later gts. 0-60 on a punto gt is 8.0 secs standard. An Ibiza turbo is 7.2 or something close to that and has a lot more torque than the punto so unless the punto is heavily modified there is no way the punto gt will leave a remapped Ibiza off the lights. My punto gt was quick but was not running to its fullest. I used to like the Ibiza cupras leons cupra rs 225s but my mate has just burnt a leon cupra r 225 and yeah its fast and he tries to race every one in it and destroyed a punto gt turbo.
Written on: 06/09/2006
My Ibiza is running 205-210bhp (depends on weather) at the moment. It will run 0-60 in low 6s (6 - 6.5s) depending upon launch and track surface. 1/4 mile in low 14s. It is quick indeed but the handling isn't brilliant, so twisty roads need to be negotiated with some care if you are an inexperienced driver.
If a choice of 'old school' hatchback turbos is on the menu, it would have to be Pulsar GTiR, Escort Cossie or Renault 5 GT Turbo. They have genuine power.

How can you give an honest review about a car you have just bought? Give us an update after a year to see what the car is really like.

Totally awesome acceleration kills all other hot hatches dead.. looks great.. loads of torque.. may need uprated breaks all round and drilled discs for extra power under breaking. Pushing a stunning 170 bhp crazy figures for a little 1.4.
must buy.

Great advice, but what should i be looking for when buyin a punto gt? I've heard electrics can be naff and the chip has to be changed when fitting a dump with standard boost? Any one verify? Also how is the build quality?

I have had 2 putos, and have just got a punto gt turbo and it's great fun. It's by far nippier than saxo vtrs, golf gti, and louds more. The turbo boust is spot on , however i do recommend that you leave the engine running for 30 seconds before cutting off, because this gives time the the turbo to cool down and prevents it from kracking. Overall give me a punto any day of the week, powerful, underestimated and a bird magnet. who wants more! (read more)

This cars a must have car THE ITALIAN STALLION When looking for a punto always give the car a really good run, keep an eye on the boost pressure of the turbo, if it's bellow 6 the chances are the turbo's on the way out. Also after taking the car for a drive stop the car and sit and listen for any noises coming from the engine department, if theres any noises INVESTIGATE. (read more)

6 Psi on a standard turbo....I dont think so how could it possibly be faster than any other hot hatch running at 6 PSI. Please read: Made from 1994 (L) until 1999 (V), the Punto GT came in three versions – all being very similar, save some cosmetic changes and minor engine modifications. Powered by a 1372cc SOHC 8v 1.6 bar (18.8 psi) turbocharged and intercooled engine, the Punto creates 136bhp at 5750rpm (the phase 3 model was reduced to 130bhp without performance loss) and 153lbs/ft torque at 3000rpm.

Thats more like it...

The standard Punto GT's are not running at 1.6 bar as it shows on the dial they are running at 1.2 bar which is more nearer the 14psi mark.
Written on: 01/02/2003
Two Points, firstly 1.2 bar is not the standard boost presure, just the level that it is thought can safely be raised to (the second comment posted)
Also, 2000Bhp....rolling roaded? What other mods to go with the IHI hybrid...uprated actuator, fuel pump, seb chip, i/cooler, filter, cams? 200BHP still a real struggle unless running silly, not everyday boost pressure.

I want one!! Yea baby...outrun a golf GTI? Mark II? Hard to believe, gonna have to test drive one 1st.....TURRRRBBBOOO!!! And forget "PSI this Lb/ft" etc, G-force is what matters...if my head sticks to the head rest when i put my foot down then IT's FAST!!

Well Andy mate if 1.2bar isnt the standard boost pressure then why does my owners manual say that that is what they are running at? Or is it wrong?
page 167 of the fiat punto owners handbook "turbocharging pressure: 1.2 bar" which i have now found out is 17.4 psi.
Written on: 15/05/2003
The fiat may be a pretty cool car but my renault 11 turbo would still make one look stupid in a race

il stick to my nissan 200sx 2litre turbo thanks :)) but they aint bad for a 1.4 engine

I have just purchased a GT Turbo and i think its great fun, but does anyone know where i can get a highbrid turbo from and how much?
Written on: 17/07/2003
If you do some decent tuning people complete stage three turbo change, Kent cams, port polishing, gas flowing, power boost valve induction kit strait into a bonnet vent cylindric staneless steel pipes, any choice of performance exhaust system and a head change you can have these rolling roaded at 225 - 270 Bhp. Pushing 0 - 62 mph in 5.2 secs. I know I've seen this done. IT'd stand up to any Nissan ( xcept Skyline GTR 33). Hot hatchs Rule. OH and Especially New Clio V6 3.0.

Richard, where did you get all that info from? I've got money burning a hole in my pocket and a punto GT that is just dieing to go faster!!!I need some prices and places to go if anyone can help. Already got a dump valve and air filter.
Cheers
275 hp and only 5.2 seconds, thought you could have dreamt up something quicker than that. did you also forget to mention the uprated cooling system, the uprated drivetrain, the uprated brakes to match this starship like performance figure. really makes me wonder why the likes of burns and mcrae spend £400K getting a mere 300 hp out of the world rally cars when all they need is a punto and a set of spanners from halfords.
just to throw some figures into the equation. from 79 horsepower, i get 0 - 60 in 3.7 seconds, from 850 cc. yes it is a bike, and not even a quick one at that. grow up fer christs sake!
Written on: 10/04/2004
macdave69 I'm sure your bikes a right animal with 79bhp behind it's 1inch bicycle wheel. What you riding? a moped off a cliff? And to everyone else 6psi! don't make me laugh. 1.2 bar is about standard without a bleed. You won't get much over 200bhp without pretty much buyiong a whole new engine. Just chip it, bleed valve, port an polished head, kent cams or similar, front mounted intercooler and uprated fuel pum (standard one will leave you with fueling problems if your running stupid hp). Also would love to see a punto beat about 13 - 14 second quarter mile let alone what other people are saying.

That's all well and good, but you're driving around in a Punto! It's a car for women!
Written on: 26/08/2004
Right 6psi, don't make me laugh! Mine ran to 1.2 bar (14psi) standard, spoke to TURBOSMART and they sold and set me a up a 3 way bleed and she now runs to 1.5 bar (18psi) and is a lot quicker so there is your first mistake. Secondly, comment on Punto being a woman's car, like to see you keep up on your push bike. Whoever owns a Punto GT and is on puntosports.co.uk we all know what the real figures on these cars are and they do not run at 6psi as standard. Sorry that just made me laugh!

The Fiat Punto 1.4 GT turbo is an excellent hot hatch. Will out run golf gti, saxo vys, 106 gti, charade gtti and the renault 5 turbo. looks good, handles good- when dropped and coz its turbo will yield big performance gains with minor modifications. have yet to be beaten by any hot hatch off lights. Spliff1Star's Response to ste gt's Review
Written on: 30/05/2005
i have never had this problem with mine, but everyone seems to have this problem. I've even heard it happening with a few toyota starlet gts. Maybe its the sparkplugs or leads? this seems a common fault with punto gts now. if its none of them take the car to a proper garage that knows nos what they are talking about and knows how to work on punto gts.
