“American Tune is the most recent album release from...”

★★★★★

written by sirg0508 on 31/05/2004

American Tune is the most recent album release from Eva Cassidy, 7 years after she passed away. The album reached number 1 in the album charts in the UK following the successes of 'Songbird' and 'Imagine'.

This album contains 10 previously unreleased tracks (Track 5: 'God Bless The Child' is found on 'The Other Side' but is different from this version).

This is quite an upbeat album but at the same time contains some very romantic songs such as 'You Take My Breath Away'. Eva has a quality unfound in many of today's manufactured artists which enables her to release so my emotion within a person it brings them to tears.

Track listing:

1. Drowning In A Sea Of Love
2. True Colours
3. The Water Is Wide
4. Hallelujah I Love Him So
5. God Bless The Child
6. Dark Eyed Molly
7. American Tune
8. It Don't Mean A Thing
9. Yesterday
10. You Take My Breath Away

Information of each song:

1. Written by Gamble/Huff. Thus far the only song by the Philadelphia songsmiths to show up on an Eva album. It is possible that the bands reference for this was the BB King version, although the album liner notes suggest it would have been via the Joe Simon version.

2. Written by Kelly/Steinberg. Very different from Cyndi Lauper's version. This is a very moving song which detracts from the pathos in the original version.

3. Trad. Arr. This is an early song that Eva learned at school. This version chosen from Live At Pearls includes people talking in the background as it was recorded live, which may put people off, but never the less, it's still a great song.

4. Written by Ray Charles. This song originally contained the lyrics of 'Hallelujah, I love HER so' but Eva changed it. The reference could be linked to Eva's hero Stevie Wonder.

5. Written by Herzog/Holliday. This version was created later than that on the Other Side album and is from a practice session. Eva knew this song very well as it was sung by Billie Holliday.

6. Written by Archie Fisher. This is one of my favourites on the album. It's recorded in 1993 at Chris Biondo's studio with bouzouki and tin whistle overdubs added by Marcy Marxer in June 2003. Eva probably learned this song from Fairport Convention.

7. Written by Paul Simon. This is the title track of the album. Recorded Live at Pearls in 1994. This song has its origins in Bach's 1727 Choral work "The Saint Matthew Passion" which itself borrowed from a 1601 love song written by Hans Leo Hassler. 'American Tune' has quickly established itself as one of Eva's best interpretations.

8. Written by Duke Ellington/Irving Mills. One from the catalogue of Eva's favourite female vocalist, Ella Fitzgerald. This version is live with the "jazz trio" Chris, Keith and
Bruno Nasta on violin.

9. Written by Mcartney/Lennon. The most covered song of all time. Originally scheduled for the 'Imagine' album, according to a press release from Hot Records.
Features another cameo by Dan Cassidy.

10. Written by Claire Hammill. This folk song was done in a variety of styles by Eva, was another song recorded very early in her career and was one of the 5 songs on the tape that Chris B played for Chuck.

This is an album that has to be included in your collection. A mixture of happiness and songs that can bring you to tears in the only way Eva knows how. Only 2 more albums are to be released!! This was a piece of burried treasure!
