The Yamaha XJ900 is the perfect all-round sports tourer. Great rider position for long hauls with a more than capable faring. Rock solid motor and simple to maitain. Not a rocket ship but at 47 yo more than enough motorbike for me. Pity Yamaha aren't still making this model.

Bought my 900 diversion new March 99. Now done 33,000 mls trouble free. Replaced collector box with stainless steel last year and starter brushes this week. Bike still looks like new and is never deliberately ridden in rain. Great touring bike but too heavy to scratch round corners with. Had many bikes over the years as I am now 59yrs old. Probably the most reliable bike ever owned and still a pleasure to ride. Simple engineering built to last.

Had the Yamaha XJ900 Diversion for seven years, has been the most reliable bike ever owned. The brake pistons where replaced after 25000 miles and added steel brake hoses which I would strongly recommend. A sports bike it is not so do not attempt to ride like it is and you will not go wrong. I only weigh 10 stone so it is a big heavy lump to try and push about - try to park were I can ride away without lugging it about. With panniers on, set the suspension to the hardest setting and go.

I recently purchased a 1997 XJ900 Diversion with 80000kms for commuting a well as the weekend ride with my mates. I have had many motorbikes, GPZ900R, CBR1000, VN1500 but this is the best bike I have ever ridden. Great shaft drive, good wind protection, reliability, very user friendly after you get started. Very comfortable to single or two up riding, my 14old daughter loves it.

i have my xj900s diversion 6 years now and apart from fitting a new collector box it's been totally reliable. I've covered 30,000 miles and just adore it. for me a little underpowered but maybe new cans would cure this but no new cans look like the original chrome ones. best mpg i have achieved is 64, touring mode and worst is 48, so can't complain. cheap insurance too makes it almost as cheap to insure as it is to tax it! all consumables easily changed and shaft drive is quiet and unobtrusi ...

The Yamaha XJ900 Diversion is good value for money if you have a budget as I bought my 1999 model for £650 which I consider to be a bargain .
At 58000 on the clock the engine still feels tight as though it just came out of a showroom. Very comfortable to ride not getting" numb bum" on long journeys as was the case with the divy 600 I couldn't wait to get rid of. Nice looks and great for touring , Good mpg and not too over the top with plastic.

Bad points are: Clunky gear change from col ...

I have owned some hand grenade bikes before so getting a XJ 900 was a bit of a step down. I got the bike mainly to do a bit of touring on (great for that) and the wife dident like getting wipe lash on my old bike. It suits us down to the ground comftable also for passanger realible great carrying ability good size tank and the shaft drive is almost maintance free (no more chain and sprocket problems).
One thing I am 40 yrs old so maybe I am taming down a bit. This is not a young mans bike unless ...

Overall the Yamaha Diversion is a thoroughly satisfying bike - by far the most reliable transport I've ever owned, two wheels or four. Regensburg (Bavaria) to London in a day, 700 miles, and I could still stand up straight at the end - can't be bad.

This a great affordable tourer/commuter. Remains comfy for many miles and is the most reliable bike I have ever known. The shaft drive is great and makes life a lot easier if you do a lot of miles. The bike is only let down by some build quality issues such as the instant rot collector box. The gearbox can be a bit clunky too. I have had it now for 11 years and have done many thousands of comuter and touring miles on it and it never once let me down. It has a good tank range and I find it remain ...

Need to get on to decent rubber after around first 7000 miles. I am on my second Yamaha XJ900 Diversion, having been knocked off my first (in England) after only 7000 miles, but he did saved me the cost of a new set of tyres that I was about to purchase. My first Diversion was also to be my last bike as I am 64 years of age and that is why I purchased a second Diversion, after the accident had written off the first. It now resides in Spain where it serves the purpose as a great tourer without t ...

This is my 2nd Yamaha XJ900 Diversion, and it will shortly be changed for a Triumph Sprint. Bought for motorway commuting it was excellent. Decent fairing (much improved by adding lowers), good economy (ca 50 mpg), very comfortable, 190 mile range, very dependable, great shaft drive - what more could you want?

Cornering now, that's a different story. It's slow to turn, top heavy, has crude suspension, and demands a very firm hand when things get bumpy. Add in a bit of tyre wear and things ...
